According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Athletics made an inquiry about third baseman Andy LaRoche "quite some time ago," but the Pirates asked for Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney.
We can see why those talks didn't get very far, but at least Bucs GM Neal Huntington is aiming high. The Athletics are actively looking for a third baseman, but their interest in the Padres' Kevin Kouzmanoff have been "tepid at best." Free agents Miguel Tejada and Orlando Cabrera are possibilities to return, but it would have to be on the A's terms. Also, neither has never played the hot corner before. Ideally, the A's would like to obtain a young third baseman or shortstop with some versatility, but those are pretty hard to come by. |
