According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Athletics made an inquiry about third baseman Andy LaRoche "quite some time ago," but the Pirates asked for Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney.
We can see why those talks didn't get very far, but at least Bucs GM Neal Huntington is aiming high. The Athletics are actively looking for a third baseman, but their interest in the Padres' Kevin Kouzmanoff have been "tepid at best." Free agents Miguel Tejada and Orlando Cabrera are possibilities to return, but it would have to be on the A's terms. Also, neither has never played the hot corner before. Ideally, the A's would like to obtain a young third baseman or shortstop with some versatility, but those are pretty hard to come by.

According to Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com, the Athletics have "broached the subject" of trading for Andy LaRoche of the Pirates.
The Athletics made a big play for Adrian Beltre before he signed with the Red Sox, but they are still looking for a solution at third base. The 26-year-old LaRoche is an interesting case, as the Pirates have young Pedro Alvarez rapidly rising through their minor league system. LaRoche batted just .258/.330/.410 with 12 home runs and 64 RBI last season, but hinted that there is some power in his bat after all by slamming eight home runs after the All-Star break. According to Urban, the Athletics have also considered a trade for Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Padres.

Perry Hill stepped down from his post as Pirates infield coach Saturday and shared some criticisms of the club on his way out.
Hill, who also served as the Bucs' in-game first base coach, believes the team was too aggressive on the trade market this season. After all, the Pirates shipped off three-fourths of their infield (Jack Wilson, Adam LaRoche and Freddy Sanchez). "The Pirates made their statement," Hill said. It was time for me to go. I won't be back with the Pirates next year."

Andy LaRoche may move to second base in 2010, general manager Neal Huntington revealed.
The move would make room for prospect Pedro Alvarez, the No. 1 pick in 2008. Alvarez excelled after a mid-season promotion to Double-A and is expected to make his major league debut in the second half of 2010, although this is not certain. "If that's going to help us out for me to go to second, that doesn't bother me at all," said LaRoche. The 25-year old would see a fantasy boost if he moved to second and has seen his power develop over the final couple months of 2009.

Facing his former team, Andy LaRoche had the game of his life Monday, going 5-for-5 with two homers, two doubles and six RBI as the Pirates clobbered the Dodgers 11-1.
LaRoche went 10-for-18 with three homers and four doubles in the series to raise his OPS from 696 to 736. He's hitting .338 with five homers for the month, so he shouldn't have to worry about his starting job entering 2010.

Andy LaRoche returned to the starting lineup on Thursday and went 1-for-3 against the Reds.
