Beat writer Rich Cimini believes there's a "50-50" chance Thomas Jones returns to the Jets in 2010.
The sides may be moving in opposite directions. Jones has been angling for a contract extension, and the Jets seem hesitant to pay his $2.8 million roster bonus in March. Jones will likely have to swallow his pride and accept a pay-cut and a reduced role to return.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was noncommittal on Thomas Jones' future Thursday.
Tannenbaum said the team "hopes to have him back," but he also pointed to economic factors that could play into the decision. Jones is due a $2.8M roster bonus in March in addition to a $2.8M salary. The five straight seasons of 290+ carries appeared to finally catch up to him in the playoffs, which likely has the Jets re-thinking their backfield plans for 2010. Jones could be asked to take a paycut befitting his new status as a complementary player.

Jets beat writer Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post "guesses" that Thomas Jones will stay with the team for one more year.
If the team can't find another quality back this spring (which really shouldn't be a problem), Jones is likely to stay despite a $2.8M offseason roster bonus. Shonn Greene has only flashed, and Leon Washington is coming off a compound leg fracture. The NY Daily News also says in Tuesday morning's editions that Jones could stick around in a "complementary" role.

Thomas Jones ran for 42 yards on 16 carries and caught two balls for 28 yards in the Jets' AFC title game loss to Indianapolis.
He only saw 18 touches because Shonn Greene missed all but two second-half plays with a rib injury. While Jones had a career-most 1,402 rushing yards this regular season, the 31-year-old fell off sharply down the stretch. Including the playoffs, he averaged a mere 3.09 YPC in his last six games and was significantly outplayed by Greene. With a $2.8M roster bonus coming due on March 9, the Jets have a big decision looming as to Jones' future.

A pair of Jets beat writers told the Indianapolis Star they would be "surprised" if the team ended up paying Thomas Jones' $3 million roster bonus in March.
GM Mike Tannenbaum said in late October that he expected Jones to be with the team "now and into the future." The Jets beat writers were unanimous in their belief at the time that Jones' option would be picked up due to Leon Washington's broken leg. Shonn Greene's playoff emergence appears to be behind the change in sentiment. It's worth noting that an uncapped season would allow the Jets to spend more freely as a playoff contender.

Thomas Jones ran for just 41 yards on 14 carries in the Jets' Divisional Round upset of the Chargers Sunday.
The Jets are riding the hot hand, so Shonn Greene was the lead back for a second straight game, especially in the red zone. Jones, though, came up with the game-clinching first down with 1:42 remaining, executing on fourth-and-a-foot. Jones lacks Greene's explosiveness and power, and will likely continue to play a "complementary" role at Indianapolis.
