 Bruce Gradkowski-QB- RaidersFeb. 9 - 2:35 pm et
ESPN's AFC West blogger Bill Williamson believes the Raiders will re-sign restricted free agent Bruce Gradkowski and allow him to compete for the starting job.
There's no question the offense moved more smoothly and with more gusto under Gradkowski than JaMarcus Russell. Neither player is the solution at quarterback, however. The Raiders are setting the bar awfully low with Gradkowski's career completion percentage of 53.3 and yards per attempt average of 5.4.

Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha conceded Friday that JaMarcus Russell didn't prepare himself well enough last offseason to be the Raiders' starter.
"You can have all the intangibles, but ... mentally, you've got to do it yourself," said Asomugha. Russell's poor work ethic has been well documented, and it now appears the Raiders won't simply hand him the starting job this offseason. He's going to have to do a complete 180 to have a shot at beating out the competition this summer.

Raiders senior executive John Herrera suggests the hiring of Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator does not give JaMarcus Russell a leg up on the starting job for next season.
Jackson's hiring was seen by many as another avenue for Al Davis to get at least some of his money's worth out of Russell. More likely, the 2007 No. 1 overall pick will have to earn the starting job in training camp. We don't like his chances, regardless of the level of competition brought in this offseason.

Jamarcus Russell will be back with the Raiders in 2010, sources tell ESPN's Len Pasquarelli.
This just confirms what we already knew -- owner Al Davis isn't going to give up on Russell yet. Pasquarelli says Oakland brass still believes JaMarcus can be a productive player in the league, particularly with the right coaching. We're skeptical about that because of Russell's work habits, decision making, and poor accuracy. He's likely to return as a backup next season.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Tom Cable will stay on as Raiders head coach in 2010.
Cable did get his team to play hard down the stretch for a second straight season. Owner Al Davis appears to be going with Cable's ability to motivate over JaMarcus Russell, who Cable benched in-season despite Davis' belief that the 2007 No. 1 overall pick is a "great player." Cable's playcalling duties are likely to be stripped, however, in favor of offensive coordinator target Hue Jackson. In the last year of his contract, Cable enters 2010 as a lame duck.

Via ubiquitous club spokesman John Herrera, the Raiders say they are not concerned that JaMarcus Russell skipped the team's season-ending meetings in favor of going to Las Vegas.
"JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders official)," Herrera said. "He was there for a legitimate reason." Herrera didn't say with that reason was. Russell is on track to be a backup for Oakland in 2010.
