Owner Art Rooney II has made it clear to coach Mike Tomlin that he wants the Steelers' offensive philosophy to tilt back toward the run again this year.
Tomlin reportedly agreed that the running game will be a point of emphasis in 2010. This has been a big story in Pittsburgh, where they're blaming the defense's meltdown on Bruce Arians' high-scoring offense. Rashard Mendenhall will see an increase in carries next season, but the offense will continue to rely on the arm of its best player -- Ben Roethlisberger.

Assuming Willie Parker is gone, Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette doesn't see Mewelde Moore as Rashard Mendenhall's backup.
Bouchette thinks the Steelers would have to go outside the organization to replace the free agent Parker after Moore's role declined sharply down the stretch. Either way, Mendenhall is in line for the vast majority of carries next season.

 Steelers Offense-TM - Steelers Jan. 6 - 3:55 pm et

The Steelers have decided to retain offensive coordinator Bruce Arians for 2010.
This should keep Ben Roethlisberger in the top-ten fantasy QBs next season. Arians, whose pass-first ways helped Pittsburgh finish as the No. 7 offense but were trashed by fans that don't realize the team's strength is no longer on the ground, will be back for his third season as the Steelers' playcaller. His return also bodes well for Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Heath Miller, Mike Wallace, and new every-down running back Rashard Mendenhall.

Rashard Mendenhall rushed 20 times for 94 yards and added one catch for 26 yards in Sunday's win over the Dolphins.
Mendenhall surprisingly lost a lot of snaps to Willie Parker in this one. Parker was in for some red zone work early in the game and was the featured back when the Steelers were trying to salt the game away. Nevertheless, Mendenhall established himself as the Steelers' starter, third-down back and bell cow this season. Parker may not even be on the roster next season.

Rashard Mendenhall rushed 17 times for 36 yards with a touchdown and added one catch for four yards in Sunday's win over the Steelers.
Mendenhall had a terrible game. He dropped an easy touchdown pass, lost a fumble and plowed into the back of his line over and over. The good news is that coach Mike Tomlin stuck with his second-year back. Mendenhall will try to rebound against the Dolphins next week.

Coach Mike Tomlin is starting to compare Rashard Mendenhall to Ray Rice for his pass-catching and blitz-pickup abilities.
"With each day, this guy gains confidence and, really, we gain confidence in what he's capable of," said Tomlin. Mendenhall's increased role in the passing game bodes well for his Dynasty value, making him an every-down back with receiving yards making up for disappointing rushing games.
