Saints coach Sean Payton revealed that FB Heath Evans will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He'll be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
The Saints' will feel Evans' loss as a lead-blocker, but Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell should remain successful behind the combination of Kyle Eckel, Lynell Hamilton and tight ends David Thomas and Darnell Dinkins. Evans is due $755,000 next season in the final year of his contract.

Saints FB Heath Evans (knee) is likely out for Monday night's game against the Falcons.
Evans left Sunday's win over the Dolphins with a right knee injury. The MRI results are unknown, but general manager Micky Loomis said he's looking at other options "based on the length of time that Heath is out." The Saints could go with a free agent or shift TE David Thomas or RB Lynell Hamilton into the role.

Saints coach Sean Payton shot down talk that fullback Heath Evans was signed to be a short-yardage specialist.
Evans will be an option to pick up tough yards if Pierre Thomas gets hurt, but Thomas' role is secure for now. Evans will focus on being a lead blocker.

Free agent pickup Heath Evans is expected to focus on lead blocking for the Saints.
He is a short-yardage option and can catch, but the Saints appear satisfied with Pierre Thomas at goal-line back. Evans probably won't top 50 touches.

Saints agreed to terms with FB Heath Evans on a two-year contract.
Mike Karney will be released, which means that Evans will move right into the starting lineup. The Saints have been looking for a short-yardage power back, so the well-rounded Evans could be a top goal-line vulture in 2009. He has experience in that role with the Patriots. If Evans takes those responsibilities, Pierre Thomas' fantasy stock would take a big hit.
