Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that Jaime Moyer (hernia, knee) believes he can be ready by the first week of the season.
Moyer has experienced a series of setbacks his surgically-repaired groin region, delaying surgery on his left knee. Despite Moyer's proclamation, general manager Ruben Amaro will try to find a low cost alternative among the remaining starters in free agency. It's possible that Moyer could be stuck in the bullpen again if Amaro uncovers a bargain.

Moyer's 47-year-old body might have finally caught up with him, but he's still hoping to be ready by the time pitchers and catchers report. "I've been feeling pretty good as of late," he said recently. "I feel like I'm coming along quite well. ... I've been pretty blessed to stay away from that kind of stuff. I guess it was my time." Moyer checked into Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on Tuesday night and may stay through the weekend to determine the cause, said team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti. The 46-year-old southpaw experienced "increasing discomfort" last weekend, and was brought to Philadelphia to be re-examined by Dr. Bill Meyers, chief of general surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital. Moyer saw Meyers on Tuesday and remained in the hospital to undergo tests, including an MRI. This is the second setback following surgery, as Moyer was hospitalized in mid-October with a blood infection. Ciccotti said he is optimistic that Moyer will be ready for spring training.

Jamie Moyer is "disheartened" about the team's decision to move him to the bullpen, but doesn't want to be a distraction.
"I'm really not happy with this decision that the Phillies have made," Moyer said. "I will take what they've asked me to do, but I'm not really excited about the decision that has been made. Ultimately, I'm a little disheartened because this past winter when I was negotiating with the Phillies this was a sore thumb, if you will, about this potentially happening." Moyer went on to suggest that he was misled by general manager Ruben Amaro Jr, who once assured him that a situation like this wouldn't happen. A team spokesperson said Amaro declined comment because he doesn't discuss contract negotiations.
