Red Sox signed 3B Adrian Beltre to a one-year, $9 million contract with a $5 million player option for 2011.
The 2011 option will increase to $10 million if Beltre makes 640 plate appearances this year, a moderately attainable goal. The 30-year-old is a superb defender and will man third base for the Red Sox in 2010. He finished with a lousy .265/.304/.379 batting line last season and hit just eight home runs, but the tight confines of Fenway Park should boost those numbers.

According to Alex Speier of WEEI.com, the Red Sox only added $2 million to the 2010 payroll for luxury tax purposes after signing Adrian Beltre and trading Casey Kotchman to the Mariners for Bill Hall.
It's some pretty clever maneuvering. The $5 million player option for Adrian Beltre is key, as it pulls his average annual value to $7 million per season. With that contract in place, the Red Sox agreed to trade Kotchman -- likely to make $3.5 million in arbitation -- to the Mariners for Hall, whose contract averages $6 million per season. In turn, the Mariners will kick in around $7.5 million as part of the trade, which will be deducted from the Red Sox payroll for luxury tax purposes. Add it all up and the Red Sox were able to sign Beltre and acquire Hall for just around $2 million. Not bad, Theo. Not bad at all.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Adrian Beltre can bump his 2011 option up to $10 million if he reaches 640 plate appearances in 2010.
Beltre hasn't made over 640 plate appearances since 2006, when he finished with 681. If he doesn't reach the goal this year, his option will remain $5 million with a $1 million buyout. Beltre agreed to a one-year, $9 million with the Red Sox on Monday and will start at third base.

According to Peter Gammons, now of MLB.com, Adrian Beltre's deal with the Red Sox is worth $9 million over one year with a $5 million option for 2011.
ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported just moments ago that Beltre's deal might be worth over $10 million annually, and SI.com's Jon Heyman added that it might be a two-year deal. These terms would certainly make a little more sense. The 30-year-old is a superb defender, but he finished with a measly .265/.304/.379 batting line last season and hit just eight home runs.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports has confirmed that the Red Sox and third baseman Adrian Beltre have reached agreement on a contract.
ESPN.com's Buster Olney believes the deal will be worth between $10-$10.5 million annually, which seems like a lot to give a player who hit just .265/.304/.379 and eight home runs in 2009. That said, he's an elite defender and the Red Sox have made shoring up their defense a priority this offseason. SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that deal is likely for two years.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes Adrian Beltre's contract with the Red Sox will be worth between $10 and $10.5 million annually.
The deal might also include some sort of opt-out clause. The Red Sox can afford the hefty sum, but it's pretty clear now why the A's and other interested teams bowed out so quickly. $10 million annually is quite the sum for a guy who hit just .265/.304/.379 with eight home runs in 2009.

Free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre is "close to a deal" with the Red Sox, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.
The A's recently pulled their offer to Beltre off the table and the other teams with interest have probably been outbid. The 30-year-old infielder is a superb defensive third baseman and it appears he will man the position for Boston in 2010. The tight confines of Fenway Park may help his power numbers see a resurgence. He hit just .265/.304/.379 with eight home runs in 2009.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the A's are "out" on free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.
The stars are quickly aligning for the announcement of a deal between Beltre and the Red Sox, though let's keep in mind the Angels' and Orioles' interest. The 30-year-old Beltre finished last season with a lousy .265/.304/.379 batting line and eight home runs, but he is a superb defender.

According to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, the Red Sox have made an offer to free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Edes reports that the A's, Angels and Orioles remain in contention for Beltre. Agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a long-term contract worth more than $10 million annually. Boston's pursuit is somewhat complicated by the voided Mike-Lowell-to-Texas trade. Lowell is owed $12 million in 2010. The 30-year-old Beltre is an excellent defensive third baseman, but hit a measly .265/.304/.379 with eight home runs in 2009.

According to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, the Red Sox are "still very much in (the) mix" for free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, while the A's, and possibly Angels and Orioles remain in contention.
This contradicts a report by Mike Silverman of the Boston Herald, which stated that the Red Sox were out on Beltre, a report that contradicted most all reports before it. We've seen plenty of smoke in the last 24 hours in regards to Beltre rumors, indicating that the possible fire of his ultimate decision is imminent. Stay tuned.

According to Mike Silverman of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are "not currently in (the) mix at all" for free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.
This refutes most previous reports, which had the Red Sox as one of the front-runners to land Beltre's services. Published reports Monday had Beltre nearing a decision on his next destination. Agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a long-term contract worth more than $10 million annually, which might be too rich for Boston's blood with Mike Lowell still under contract.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre is close to choosing between two clubs.
Brown writes that the teams are on separate coasts and guesses that it could be either the Athletics or Red Sox. Both are logical fits, but Boston still has Mike Lowell in-house, as the proposed trade with the Rangers broke down after concerns about his right thumb emerged. Beltre, represented by Scott Boras, is believed to be seeking a multi-year contract worth around $10 million per season.

The Red Sox remain in discussions with free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre, according to ESPN Boston.
The move is somewhat complicated by the voided Mike-Lowell-to-Texas trade, but Boston appears motivated to acquire Beltre anyway. The 30-year-old is an excellent defensive third baseman, but hit a measly .265/.304/.379 with eight home runs in 2009. Agent Scott Boras is reportedly seeking a long-term contract for north of $10 million annually.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports lists the Giants, Red Sox, Twins, Mariners and A's as possible landing spots for third baseman Adrian Beltre.
The Giants have turned up the heat recently and the Red Sox may make a strong push for the free agent if they're able to unload Mike Lowell. But if Beltre is still demanding a double-digit annual salary, talks aren't likely to move quickly. The 30-year-old is an excellent defensive third baseman, however he hit a measly .265/.304/.379 with eight home runs in 2009.

The Giants remain in contact with free agent 3B Adrian Beltre, but the two sides aren't close to a deal, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com.
Beltre is the best third baseman available in free agency, but the Giants don't appear to be willing to commit to the four-year, $40 million contract agent Scott Boras is seeking. The Mariners remain in the periphery, stating a willingness to move Chone Figgins to second base, but Beltre may want to wait to see if the Red Sox complete the trade of Mike Lowell before deciding on a destination. The Giants are also considering Mark DeRosa for the hot corner.

The Red Sox have "significant" interest in free agent Adrian Beltre.
Beltre, 30, hit .265/.304/.379 in 2009 while playing superb defense and would fit in well in Boston. Unfortunately, the club is going to first have to find a suitor for Mike Lowell, which won't be easy. The 35-year-old is owed $12 million in 2010. Beltre, meanwhile, is reportedly looking for a monster deal -- $13 million annually for five seasons, according to the report.

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the Red Sox are putting themselves in a position to make a run at free agent Adrian Beltre.
First the Red Sox will have to find a suitor for Mike Lowell, which won't be easy. The guy is 35 years old and is owed $12 million in 2010. On top of it all, he's an injury risk. Beltre, 30, hit .265/.304/.379 in 2009 while playing superb defense and would fit in well in Boston, but there are hurdles that must be jumped before any deal can come close to happening.

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants plan to discuss Adrian Beltre soon with his agent, Scott Boras.
The two sides have not yet met but apparently plan to do so at his week's Winter Meetings. Beltre, 30, hit .265/.304/.379 in 2009 and is thought to be seeking over $10 million annually on the open market.

Adrian Beltre has declined the Mariners' offer of arbitration.
The Mariners have already replaced Beltre at third base with their acquisition of free agent Chone Figgins, so they'll move on and grab a draft pick when Beltre signs elsewhere. The 30-year-old .265/.304/.379 in 2009 and is thought to be seeking over $10 million annually on the open market.

Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that Adrian Beltre is not likely to accept arbitration from the Mariners.
Heyman still thinks the Mariners will try to keep him, but that seems unlikely given the money they are expected to spend on Chone Figgins, with Russell Branyan and Jason Bay still out there as possibilities. The Mariners would receive draft pick compensation should Beltre -- a Type B free agent -- sign elsewhere.
