Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston confirmed last week that Scott Downs and Jason Frasor will battle for ninth-inning duties this spring.
"It's going to be between [Downs & Frasor] and anybody else that Alex brings into camp," Gaston told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Downs had a 3.09 ERA and was 9-of-13 in save opportunites last season while Frasor posted a 2.50 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 11 saves in 14 chances. The Blue Jays are also interested in acquiring free agent Kevin Gregg, who could join the mix.

Scott Downs is not expected to pitch the remainder of the season.
Downs has been nursing a sore hamstring. If he doesn't appear in a game, he will finish the season with nine saves and a 3.09 ERA. He will compete for the closer's job in spring training, although the job seems Jason Frasor's to lose.

Blue Jays activated LHP Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list.
Jays manager Cito Gaston has said he will ease Downs back into the closer's role, so Jason Frasor owners should hang tight for the moment. Downs was placed on the disabled list August 2 with an injury to his left big toe. He's 1-3 on the season with nine saves and a 3.41 ERA.

Scott Downs (toe) is set to come off the disabled list Monday, manager Cito Gaston said.
"He goes right back to the bullpen," Gaston said. "I'm not sure about closing. I'm not sure about that. We'll see how it goes. If he got here tomorrow and I said we're going to stick him in the closer's spot right away, I'm not sure if that's fair to him either." Downs and Jason Frasor may split save chances for the rest of the season.

Scott Downs tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief last week in his first rehab appearances for Single-A Dunedin.
Downs allowed a run on two hits in his first outing Tuesday but tossed a scoreless frame Thursday. He's been on the disabled list since early August with a left big toe injury and is eligible to return at any time. A few more scoreless innings and he might get the call.

Blue Jays placed LHP Scott Downs on the 15-day disabled list with a left big toe injury.
Jason Frasor is expected to reclaim the closer's role. The Jays haven't trusted him with eighth-inning duties this year, yet he's clearly the best option in the ninth right now.

The Rockies are pursuing a trade for Blue Jays closer Scott Downs, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun.
The Rockies are being proactive in an attempt to bolster their bullpen. They are also reportedly chasing Orioles reliever Mark Hendrickson. Downs would provide a stellar bridge to closer Huston Street.

Manager Cito Gaston said that Scott Downs will continue to be his closer.
This depsite him blowing saves in two of his last three appearances while giving up six runs -- five earned -- in six games since returning from the disabled list on July 8. "I guess he'd be the first one to tell you -- his breaking ball is just not as sharp as it's been before," Gaston said. "He's not locating as well as he was, either." Downs' early success figures to give him a bit of a leash, but watch this situation closely if his struggles continue. Jason Frasor could be worth a look eventually.

Scott Downs recorded his first save since returning from the disabled list on Friday night against the Orioles.
Downs tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out Luke Scott and Melvin Mora on the way to the 2-0 victory. As long as he remains healthy in the second-half, there's no reason why he can't be in the upper tier of closers.

Blue Jays activated LHP Scott Downs from the 15-day disabled list.
Downs missed about three weeks with a sprained left toe. He was excellent as the club's closer before suffering the injury, posting a 1.98 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP and eight saves in 27 1/3 innings. He should resume ninth-inning duties almost immediately.

Scott Downs (toe) threw in the bullpen before Friday's game.
Downs is hoping to be activated from the disabled list this weekend, but manager Cito Gaston will wait to see how his reliever feels Saturday. "We'd love to get him back as soon as we can," said Gaston. Downs had a 1.98 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and eight saves before he sprained his left toe.

Scott Downs threw off the mound Tuesday for the first time since suffering a sprained toe two weeks ago.
Downs admitted to feeling some pain after the session, but he still hopes to return this weekend. "It's progress," Downs said. "It wouldn't be the first time I pitched through discomfort. It's not discomfort enough to where it's affecting my mechanics and that's the main thing." Manager Cito Gaston is less confident about a weekend return for Downs.

Manager Cito Gaston isn't confident that Scott Downs (toe) will be able to return from the disabled list when he is eligible on July 3.
"I hope he is but I really dont know," said Gaston. "I have no confidence in that at all." Downs threw off flat ground before Friday's game, but it looks like owners will have to remain patient for his return.

Blue Jays placed LHP Scott Downs on the 15-Day disabled list, retroactive to June 17, with a sprain of the big toe on his left foot.
It doesn't sound like the type of injury that will go away quickly, so we're not holding out hope that he'll return in 15 days. The Jays haven't officially named his replacement, but we're betting Jason Frasor and his 1.90 ERA (0.76 WHIP) get the first crack. Manager Cito Gaston has already proven that he isn't intimidated by B.J. Ryan's price tag.

Scott Downs is expected to be placed on the disabled list Thursday due to a sprained left big toe.
There's no word on how much time Downs will miss, but sprained toes have a tendency to linger, so it's certainly possible that Downs will miss more than the minimum of 15 days. The Jays have yet to announce who will close in his absence, but Jason Frasor's 1.90 ERA and 0.76 WHIP suggest that he should get the first shot over B.J. Ryan, who hasn't been scored on in his last seven appearances but still has a 5.94 ERA for the season.

Scott Downs limped off the field in the 10th inning Tuesday.
Downs suffered some sort of lower leg injury while batting. X-rays were negative, but MLB.com's Jordan Bastian believes the left-hander might require a stint on the disabled list. He'll undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Scott Downs and Brian Wolfe both blew saves as the Toronto pen gave up nine runs in 3 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Orioles.
Jesse Carlson was actually the biggest culprit. He relieved Roy Halladay in an 8-3 game to begin the bottom of the eighth and retired one of the six hitters he faced. Downs came into an 8-5 game with the bases loaded and allowed a sac fly, a single and a double to surrender the lead, with the inning only ending when Adam Jones was thrown out at home trying to score. Jason Frasor then pitched scoreless ninth and 10th innings, but the Jays weren't willing to keep him in after an Aaron Hill homer gave them a two-run lead in the 11th. B.J. Ryan came in and gave up a single to Nick Markakis before getting Aubrey Huff to pop out. Cito Gaston went to Wolfe at that point. Wolfe gave up three straight hits, including Nolan Reimold's homer to end it.

Scott Downs picked up his first save of the season in Toronto's 5-2 win over the Rangers on Thursday night.
As expected, Downs has taken over the closer role with B.J. Ryan on the disabled list. Downs worked an efficient 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout, and looks like a very solid option while Ryan is out.
