Dec. 31 - 11:31 am et
Under the terms of the new one-year agreement, the Athletics can't offer Justin Duchscherer arbitration if he is a Type A free agent, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.
This is similar to the agreement the Athletics reached with Orlando Cabrera last winter. It's part of an effort to boost Duchscherer's appeal on the free agent market once he hits free agency. It hasn't helped Cabrera this winter, but if Duchscherer can be anything close to the pitcher he was in 2008, he will surely be rewarded with a lucrative multi-year contract.

Athletics signed RHP Justin Duchscherer to a one-year contract.
Terms were not revealed, however he is expected to earn a $2 million base salary with another $3.5 million in possible incentives. Duchscherer, 32, missed the entire 2009 season after elbow surgery and treatment for clinical depression, but was 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in his first season as a starter in 2008. He'll be expected to be a veteran presence on a young staff that also includes Brett Anderson, Dallas Braden and Trevor Cahill.

The Athletics are planning to officially announce their new contract with Justin Duchscherer on Wednesday afternoon.
Duchscherer completed his physical on Tuesday. His new contract with the A's is worth $2 million in guaranteed base salary, and he can earn another $3.5 million through performance-based incentives. The 32-year-old missed all of the 2009 season while dealing with injuries and clinical depression but posted a 10-8 record with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008.

Dec. 24 - 4:07 pm et
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports Justin Duchscherer will earn a $2 million base salary in his new contract with the A's.
This deal looks even better for Oakland. Of course, Duchscherer could earn up to $5.5 million in incentives should he surpass 30 starts and 200 innings, the Athletics would surely be pleased if that came to pass. The 32-year-old right-hander should slot in as the team's No. 1 starter in front of Dallas Braden, Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill. Expect an official announcement after Christmas, as the agreement is still pending a physical.

Dec. 24 - 1:18 pm et
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Athletics have agreed in principle to a one-year contract with free agent Justin Duchscherer.
According to Crasnick, the contract would be worth $5.5 million if he reaches specific incentives. It's a minor upset to see Duchscherer stay in Oakland, as many big-market teams were rumored to have interest in the 32-year-old right-hander. Duchscherer missed the entire 2009 season due to injury and clinical depression, but his body of work suggests an excellent chance at a rebound.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's are "optimistic" about coming to an agreement with free agent Justin Duchscherer.
Duchscherer reportedly has three offers on the table and is weighing each situation. The 32-year-old missed all of the 2009 season while dealing with injuries and clinical depression but posted a 10-8 record with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008. He's drawn interest from several clubs this winter who view him as a low-risk, high-reward type of signing.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney has heard that the A's may be bringing free agent Justin Duchscherer back for the 2010 season.
Duchscherer is thought to be weighing three offers at the moment, one of which could be from Oakland GM Billy Beane. He has also been linked to the Yankees, Red Sox and D'Backs this offseason though all three of those teams have recently acquired new starters. Duchscherer, 32, missed all of the 2009 season while dealing with injuries and clinical depression but posted a 10-8 record with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 22 starts in 2008.

The Yankees are expressing interest in right-handers Justin Duchscherer and Ben Sheets, reports MLB.com.
The Yankees are thought to be interested in bringing in a veteran starter to give the team flexibility in making decisions about Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. The Yankees won't pony up the $11-12 million that Sheets is looking for, while Duchscherer has drawn interest from a dozen teams. New York is expected to wait until John Lackey comes off the board to gauge the market for pitchers.

The Diamondbacks are unlikely to sign free agent right-hander Justin Duchscherer, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Duchscherer was interested in pitching for Arizona, but the club appears to be moving on. It could be they don't have a pressing need for a starter after acquiring Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy in Tuesday's three-way blockbuster. Another possibility, according to Piecoro, is that the club saw something they didn't like in his medical records.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the Pirates have had "further talks" with free agent Justin Duchscherer.
"Still," Kovacevic writes, "do not expect anything soon." Duchscherer missed all of the 2009 season with injuries and issues related to clinical depression, so teams are likely to do a fair share of investigating before sending him contract offers. He was 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 28 starts in 2008. Multiple teams have already expressed in interest in the right-hander.

It's not clear if the Rockies view him as a reliever or starting pitcher, but the Rockies will talk to his agent in Indianapolis on Monday. Several clubs have contacted the 32-year-old this offseason, including the Red Sox and Rockies. He was excellent in 2008, his first year starting, but missed all of the 2009 season with hip, elbow and clinical depression issues. Teams are banking on him returning to form and his agent, Damon Lapa, is pushing his client as "a happier and healthier person." The Red Sox are interested in free agent Justin Duchscherer, according to FOXSports.com.
The Red Sox are interested in the 32-year-old right-hander as a starting pitcher, according to the report. Duchscherer was fantastic in his first season as a starting pitcher in 2008, going 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 22 starts. He got a late start on the 2009 season after undergoing surgery on his hip and throwing elbow, but was shut down after it was revealed he was suffering from clinical depression.

General manager Billy Beane doesn't plan to be active in the free agent market.
"We're going to look at young players to fill spots, first and foremost," Beane said, with an eye towards top prospects Brett Wallace and Chris Carter. "If those players we'd like to acquire aren't obtainable, we'll consider bringing in guys who can hold the positions down. We're going to stay disciplined and try to do everything we can to fill those spots with young players." Beane would consider re-signing Justin Duchscherer or Adam Kennedy, but will let them entertain offers on the open market first. Such a strategy would effectively squash the chances of a Miguel Tejada or Carlos Delgado landing in Oakland.

Justin Duchscherer's agent, Damon Lapa, said Tuesday that the free agent right-hander has made excellent progress with his clinical depression.
Lapa called Duchscherer "a happier and healthier person," and said he's working hard toward readying himself for the 2010 season. Duke didn't throw a pitch for the A's in 2009, but went 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 2008. He's reportedly drawing a good deal of interest around the league.
