Sep. 30 - 7:54 pm et
Francisco Rodriguez blew his seventh save of the year by giving up five runs, including a walkoff grand slam, in the ninth Wednesday against the Nationals.
Just a complete waste of money. Even though his average against has stuck right around the Mendoza Line, K-Rod has given up 34 runs in 67 2/3 innings this season, making him a thoroughly mediocre pitcher. Not that it'd be the difference in their playoff chances, but the Mets would have saved $8 million this season and probably won another three or four games had they forgotten K-Rod and just kept Darren O'Day.

Francisco Rodriguez failed to convert a save opportunity against the Braves on Wednesday night.
The season is all but over for the Mets, but they keep inventing new ways to lose. Rodriguez allowed a leadoff double to Garret Anderson, then hit Brian McCann. After Yunel Escobar sacrificed pinch-runner Reid Gorecki over to third and pinch-runner David Ross to second, K-Rod intentionally walked Adam LaRoche to get to Omar Infante. Infante hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. It looked like Rodriguez would actually make it out of the inning with the score tied, but the misadventures of Daniel Murphy continued, as he made a brutal error on an in-between hop that allowed the winning run to score. Rodriguez has a 5.66 ERA and three blown saves since the All-Star break.

Francisco Rodriguez is unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Braves as his wife gave birth to twins on Monday.
Rodriguez is expected to return to the team on Wednesday. K-Rod has a 3.03 ERA and 31 saves in 36 opportunities this season, but he has just eight saves and a 5.49 ERA since the All-Star break.

Francisco Rodriguez has been dealing with "bouts of cramps" in his left quadriceps muscle, according to the New York Daily News.
The cramps creeped up on him Sunday, but he was able to stay in the contest and collect his 30th save. Somewhere down the line, though, he may require a couple days of rest. Pedro Feliciano is becoming more than a lefty specialist, and could be asked to fill in.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel brushed off concerns about Francisco Rodriguez in a chat with reporters Saturday.
K-Rod blew his second consecutive save Friday. "He'll be a guy who will do this for years to come," Manuel said of Rodriguez. "It's just a little bump in the road for him, and I don't anticipate this being something that will continue for him. He's just been at a level too high for that to continue."

Francisco Rodriguez blew his first save of the season against the Yankees on Friday night thanks to a dropped pop-up by Luis Castillo.
The Mets keep inventing fun ways to lose baseball games. This one was a doozy. With Derek Jeter on second base and two outs, the Mets decided to intentionally walk Mark Teixeira in order to face Alex Rodriguez. It appeared the strategy was successful, as A-Rod popped the ball up to shallow right-center field, however Luis Castillo flat out dropped it. Both runners hustled the entire way and scored easily to secure a dramatic 9-8 win. Rodriguez is now 16-for-17 in save opportunities.

Francisco Rodriguez picked up a save against the Marlins on Sunday, tying him for the National League lead with 14.
Rodriguez walked Cody Ross in the outing but struck out the other three batters he faced. K-Rod's ERA now sits at 0.73 to go with a 1.01 WHIP and a 27/11 K/BB in 24 2/3 innings. The ERA will climb to the high-2.00s over time, but that's still quite good and there's no reason to expect anything less than Tier 1 performance from Rodriguez.

Francisco Rodriguez (back) returned to record his 13th save in a win over the Nationals on Monday night.
"Obviously I feel some discomfort," Rodriguez acknowledged. "It's really normal. I had the back spasms." K-Rod is a perfect 13-for-13 this season and is now tied with Heath Bell for the National League lead. He'll pitch through the pain for now.

Francisco Rodriguez (back) is able to pitch Monday if needed, according to manager Jerry Manuel.
Rodriguez collapsed in pain Saturday with back spasms, but is apparently back to normal Monday. The Mets will likely only use him if it is absolutely necessary.

Francisco Rodriguez (back) was able to walk and tow his own luggage out of Fenway Park Sunday night.
It's sounds insignificant, but it's a great sign of improvement after Rodriguez collapsed outside the clubhouse in pain on Saturday night. He could be available out of the bullpen by early next week.

Francisco Rodriguez hoped to do some throwing Sunday after receiving medication for his back spasms.
"As soon as the medicine started kicking in, I started feeling a lot better. And by this morning I was doing a lot of things that I wasn't capable of last night,," Rodriguez said. "... The pain went away and I'm feeling pretty good. Man, that was really painful. I've never experienced anything like this before. I was a little struggling to walk yesterday, but I got some medicine in me and I feel pretty good now." Anyone who rushed to pick up J.J. Putz should be less enthused now.

According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Francisco Rodriguez is out indefinitely due to lower back spasms.
K-Rod collapsed outside the clubhouse from the pain and was seen tearing up as a stretcher was called for. He has taken on a hefty workload in New York this season and it's obviously affecting him physically. J.J. Putz picked up his second save Saturday night and is likely to fill in should there be a save situation over the next few days. If Rodriguez requires a stint on the disabled list, Putz would obviously take on a ton of value.

Newsday reports that Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz might not be available for Wednesday's game.
Thanks to errors by Luis Castillo and Carlos Delgado, Putz threw 19 pitches on Tuesday and K-Rod threw 28. There's no word on who would get first crack at a save opportunity, but Bobby Parnell and Pedro Feliciano are the likeliest candidates to close should Putz and Rodriguez be unavailable.

Mets manager Jerry Manuel said Sunday that he'll use Francisco Rodriguez in non-save situations this season.
"We have, as an industry, somewhat boxed ourselves into making people believe that, 'If it's not that [save] situation, I don't do well,'" Manuel said. "But the game is still on the line. That's the bottom line. And that's what we -- especially as the team we are in New York -- we have to understand that. It's about the win, and not the statistic." K-Rod pitched in just seven non-save situations last season. Expect that to rise.

Despite going to 2-0 counts on five straight hitters, Francisco Rodriguez recorded his second save Wednesday against the Reds.
K-Rod is on pace for 162 saves, which would shatter the record he established last year. He struggled to throw strikes tonight, but the Reds didn't have a lot to threaten him after the walks and an odd error from Carlos Delgado; Brandon Phillips went to go from first to third on what seemed to be a routine groundout from Edwin Encarnacion, causing Delgado to perhaps come off the bag early on receiving the throw from first. In the end, everyone was ruled safe, and another walk loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately for the Reds, the best they could do for hitters after that were Alex Gonzalez and Laynce Nix. Gonzalez struck out, and Nix hit a deep fly, but it was hauled in on the track.

Dec. 18 - 3:20 pm et
Mets manager Jerry Manuel indicated that J.J. Putz could be in line to share save chances with Francisco Rodriguez in New York.
"That's very, very huge for us in the course of a 162-game schedule to have [more than one reliever] that can close games," Manuel said. "[K-Rod] doesn't have to save, say, 75 games. The other guy [Putz] can save 35, whatever. That's big for us." Yeah, sure. K-Rod is going to get all of the save opportunities he can handle. Backing him up with Putz in fantasy leagues might not be a bad strategy, but Putz isn't looking at more than 3-5 saves if Rodriguez stays healthy.

Mets signed RHP Francisco Rodriguez, who had been with the Angels, to a three-year, $37 million contract with a vesting option for 2012.
The option would make the deal worth $51 million and is supposed to become guaranteed based on appearances made in either 2011 or 2010 and 2011 combined. The Angels were reportedly open to bringing K-Rod back, likely on a three-year deal, and the Cardinals did make a play for him, but the Mets did appear to have the top offer on the table.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals made a play for Francisco Rodriguez but came up short financially.
In the end, however, GM John Mozeliak came away pleased with the Mets' signing, which has set the market for closers at a level much lower than expected. "You don't have to be too insightful to say things are going to be moving along," said Mozeliak. With Kerry Wood expected to sign soon with the Indians, the Cards may be focused on Brian Fuentes.

SI.com's Jon Heyman expects the Mets and Francisco Rodriguez to agree to a three-year deal worth about $37 million.
K-Rod certainly would have had more earnings potential if he had elected for a one-year deal with the chance to go back on the market next winter. However, the difference between $12 million per year and $15 million per year has a lot more to do with status than any real world consequences. At least this deal is still bigger than the three-year, $34 million contract he turned down from the Angels a year ago.
