Former Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima has signed with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Central League.
The 33-year-old walked away from the nearly $16 million remaining on his Mariners' contract in order to return to Japan. He considered returning to his former club, the Softback Hawks of the Pacific League, but ultimately signed a four-year deal with the Tigers worth approximately $21 million.

Kenji Johjima's agent confirmed Monday evening that the Mariners won't have to pay a dime of the $16 million remaining on his client's contract.
In case there were still any doubters out there. "He walks completely on his contract here, and we start fresh,'' the agent, Alan Nero said Monday. "He's made this decision without regard to financial consequence. He's a free agent in Japan, and I'll negotiate the best offer I can." Johjima opted out of his contract with the Mariners in a surprise move Monday afternoon.

General manager Jack Zduriencik clarified details on Kenji Johjima opting out of his contract, explaining that the Mariners did not pay him a buyout.
Original reports had Seattle compensating Johjima an undisclosed amount for leaving the final two years and $16 million of his contract on the table to return to Japan, but Zduriencik made it clear that wasn't a factor. He added that the Mariners could be in the market for a catcher if they decide not to simply turn the position over to prospect Adam Moore and Rob Johnson.

Kenji Johjima announced Monday that he's opting out of the final two seasons of his contract with the Mariners to resume his career in Japan.
According to Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune, Johjima came to an undisclosed buyout agreement with the Mariners after being told that he'd likely be a backup in 2010. Seattle will be off the hook for the final two years and $16 million on the ill-advised contract extension that Johjima received from former general manager Bill Bavasi, which is very good news given that he's 33 years old and hit just .235/.284/.361 over the past two seasons. As of now Rob Johnson and prospect Adam Moore are atop the Mariners' catching depth chart.

Rob Johnson is also banged up for the Mariners, so Adam Moore is getting the start behind the plate. Johjima and Johnson both figure to be available later this week.

Kenji Johjima delivered a two-run homer as the Mariners topped the White Sox 6-4 on Monday night.
The White Sox battled back from a deficit to take a lead in the top of the sixth, but the Mariners tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a solo homer from Russell Branyan and took a permanent lead two at-bats later on a two-run shot by Johjima. It was just the third homer of the season for the Seattle backstop, who is sadly putting up very similar numbers to his disappointing 2008 campaign.

Kenji Johjima (broken toe) will be activated from the disabled list on Friday and will start that day's game against the Dodgers.
Johjima was placed on the DL on May 26. He made a quick recovery after the club initially expected him to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks. Johjima batted .250/.275/.386 with three home runs and 10 RBI before being shelved.

Kenji Johjima (broken toe) is scheduled to catch a full nine innings Thursday for Triple-A Tacoma.
If Johjima can get through the frames without incident it'll increase the chances of him being activated this weekend. He was hitting .250/.275/.386 with three home runs and 10 RBI before he was sidelined.

Kenji Johjima went 1-for-4 Sunday as Triple-A Tacoma's designated hitter.
Johjima is slowly racking up innings behind the plate, but wasn't used at all in that fashion Sunday. "I would still like to see him catch a full nine or close to that," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "We'll try to give him some good work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday." He could return to the M's next weekend.

Kenji Johjima played five innings Saturday with Triple-A Tacoma.
Johjima is working back from a broken right toe. Manager Don Wakamatsu said last week that he wants his catcher to play all nine innings before he's activated, so look for his minor league rehab assignment to last a few more days.

Kenji Johjima (toe) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday instead of Friday after experiencing discomfort in his broken toe.
Johjima will see a doctor and work out with the Mariners on Friday. "He feels a little bit in the toe from some of the drills he did yesterday," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "We want to make sure he's 100 percent. We'll know more after that game he catches on Saturday. We still want him to catch nine before he's activated."

Kenji Johjima (toe) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma this weekend.
Johjima did some pregame running and hitting with teammates this afternoon. "It is good, no pain," he said after his workout. "This is the first time I did any hitting on the field and I felt no pain. I did some easy running and that was fine." He's hoping to return to the Mariners by the middle of next week.

The Mariners will hold off on plans to have Kenji Johjima (broken toe) begin hitting off a tee until after he undergoes further X-rays.
"We've got to make it sure it's healed before we progress," said manager Don Wakamatsu. The Mariners are still hoping that Johjima can return before his 6-8 weeks estimate, but they want to make sure the fractures in his foot are healed before beginning baseball activities.

Mariners placed catcher Kenji Johjima on the 15-day disabled list with a broken toe.
No word yet on how long he'll be out. Guillermo Quiroz replaces Johjima on the active roster, but Rob Johnson is likely to get the majority of starts behind the plate. Considering that Johnson is hitting .188 with a miserable 480 OPS, AL-only leaguers should stay away.
