Nationals signed outfielder Chris Duncan to a minor league contract.
The defensively-challenged Duncan might have been a better fit in the American League, but he will be able to compete for a roster spot in Washington. Duncan hit .227/.329/.358 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 260 at-bats for the Cardinals last year before he was dealt to the Red Sox. Boston shipped him to the minors and cut him after he hit just .188 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 85 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Chris Duncan's agent, Barry Meister, is talking to "about four" teams "who are really serious" about signing his client.
An American League team might make the most sense, as the defensively-challenged Duncan could log time at designated hitter. Duncan hit .227/.329/.358 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 260 at-bats for the Cardinals this year before he was dealt to the Red Sox. Boston shipped him to the minors and cut him after he hit just .188 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 85 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Red Sox released outfielder Chris Duncan.
Duncan didn't even last a month in the Red Sox' organization. He was acquired on July 22 from the Cardinals for shortstop Julio Lugo, but hit just .188 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 85 at-bats during his time with Triple-A Pawtucket. He'll look for a minor league contract elsewhere.

Red Sox optioned outfielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Pawtucket.
Duncan doesn't exactly fit into Boston's immediate plans, so he'll spend a few weeks at Triple-A Pawtucket working on his swing. The burly outfielder was batting just .037 for the Cardinals in the month of July.

Red Sox acquired outfielder Chris Duncan and a player to be named from the Cardinals for shortstop Julio Lugo.
Duncan was optioned to the minors by St. Louis earlier in the day after hitting .227 in May, .224 in June and .037 in July. The 28-year-old outfielder will likely head to Triple-A until Boston has a need. The Red Sox will pay the remainder of Lugo's contract, but reportedly can recoup some of that money if they don't receive the player to be named.

Cardinals optioned outfielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Memphis.
Duncan started the season strong, considering he underwent cervical disc replacement surgery in the offseason, but hit .227 in May, .224 in June and holds a .037 batting average currently for the month of July. The long leash provided by his father, the Cardinals' pitching coach, just snapped.

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals have optioned Chris Duncan to Triple-A Memphis.
It's about time. Duncan tends to get a longer leash than most because he's been with the club for a while and has some "ins" with the coaching staff. But he hasn't scored a hit in nine straight games and is now batting just .227/.329/.358 with five dingers and 32 RBI in 260 at-bats. He has also struck out 67 times this year and brings absolutely nothing to the table defensively.

Chris Duncan was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in a win over the Brewers on Tuesday.
It was Duncan's first home run since May 1 against the Nationals. After a .304 April, Duncan has really struggled to the tune of .213 this month. As a result, his batting average currently sits at .257.

Chris Duncan went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 7-4 on Thursday.
Duncan mishandled a flyball for his second error and was caught stealing, but those kind of mistakes are excusable when you have a 1200 OPS. Duncan is hitting .389 with two homers, a triple and five doubles in 36 at-bats.

Chris Duncan finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBI and a walk Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
The triple was his first since 2006. Duncan is batting .344 and has five doubles already. The Cards have to keep playing him while he's hot, so Colby Rasmus would seem to be in line for fewer at-bats. Both played today, with Rick Ankiel taking a seat.

Chris Duncan went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk as the Cards topped the Orioles 7-3 on Tuesday.
Duncan is batting .301/.352/.470 in 83 at-bats, which is a bit better than Colby Rasmus' .273/.371/.403 line. However, since it looks like the Cards are leaning towards keeping both and Rasmus is their best defensive outfielder, Duncan still projects as a fourth outfielder.

Chris Duncan doubled, singled and knocked in two runs Friday as a Cardinals split-squad defeated an Orioles split-squad 3-1.
Duncan was forced to take a little break due to groin tightness, but he's still making plenty of hard contact. He's batting .353/.410/.618 for the spring. It's going to be hard to pick Colby Rasmus over him in left field unless he begins to slump.

Chris Duncan didn't play on Wednesday due to soreness in his groin.
Duncan first felt discomfort during the Cardinals' game against Detroit on Tuesday, but it doesn't sound like a major concern. "They don't think it's real serious," manager Tony La Russa said. "It may have been scar tissue or something. But we'll just try to be real careful with him."

Chris Duncan went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and three RBI in the Cardinals' 5-2 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.
Duncan is hitting .385/.433/.692, giving him a cool 420 points of OPS on Colby Rasmus. The Cards may want Rasmus' speed in the ninth spot in the order, but it's going to be hard to deny Duncan if he keeps this up.

Chris Duncan went 4-for-4 with a homer, a triple and five RBI as the Cardinals blasted the Mets 15-4 on Tuesday.
While the hunch is that Colby Rasmus has the inside track on the starting job if Skip Schumaker can establish himself at second base, Duncan can't be forgotten about. He hit 43 homers in 655 at-bats between 2006 and 2007, and he's back healthy this year after upper back surgery last summer.

Chris Duncan is back at full strength after surgery last August to have a prosthetic disk inserted into his back.
Duncan's career was in jeopardy at the time of the surgery, but he's having no issues now. "I don’t feel it," Duncan said of his neck while rolling his head for effect. "I’m out there cutting loose." Duncan would stand to be a big beneficiary if Skip Schumaker can pull off a successful move to the infield. Even if he lost out on a starting spot to Colby Rasmus, he'd still be in position to get significant playing time.

Cardinals agreed to terms with outfielder Chris Duncan on a one-year, $825,000 contract.
Duncan is coming off a lost season after he suffered a herniated disk on the heels of a late-May demotion to Triple-A. He will have to overcome the potentially career-threatening injury to earn a spot on the Cardinals this spring.

Chris Duncan will undergo surgery on his herniated cervical disk on Monday, ending his season.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that "according to a specialist familiar with disk cases, such a condition 'has to be' considered career threatening." He'll have a prosthetic disk put in his back, and the recovery time is 3-6 weeks, but the team is more concerned about his long-term future and won't have him play again this season. He's reportedly been dealing with the back pain all season, which helps explain his struggles.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Chris Duncan has been diagnosed with a herniated disk.
Duncan was originally diagnosed with a bulging disk, but a herniated disk is much more serious and could very well require season-ending surgery. The paper says the Cardinals are "increasingly concerned" about his return to the lineup this season.

Cardinals placed outfielder Chris Duncan on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disk in his neck.
It's turning into a lost year for Duncan, who has hit .248/.346/.365 in 222 at-bats. Joe Mather will replace him as the Cardinals' fourth outfielder, though perhaps only until Brian Barton returns.
