The Nationals have confirmed that outfielder Nyjer Morgan broke his hand Thursday and will miss the remainder of the 2009 season.
"It's broke, guys," he told a group of reporters Thursday, "and I'm done for the year." Morgan was hitting an outstanding 351/.393/.435 with 22 stolen bases in two months with the Nationals. The 29-year-old should be fine by the start of spring training in 2010. Look for the club to recall outfielder Justin Maxwell.

Nyjer Morgan reportedly has a broken hand.
Morgan had been pacing the Nationals to respectability with a .351/.393/.435 line and 22 stolen bases since being acquired from Pittsburgh June 30, but a fractured hand will knock him out for the year. Nats fans can take solace in the fact that they're coming close to solidifying their lead in the Bryce Harper sweepstakes.

Nyjer Morgan left Thursday's game in the first inning.
The reason why is not available just yet. Morgan walked and scored a run before exiting. He had been battling the flu and missed Tuesday and Wednesday's games. Stay tuned.

Despite saying he was over his flu-like symptoms, Nyjer Morgan was rested for one more day on Wednesday.
Morgan will start on Thursday against Chicago. Willie Harris got the start in his place Wednesday.

Nyjer Morgan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a stolen base in Thursday's loss.
Morgan has been on fire since joining the Nationals. He's hitting .404 with 14 steals in 18 attempts this month. He's at .482 in 56 at-bats since the All-Star break.

Nyjer Morgan went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases against the Cubs on Sunday.
Morgan singled both times and was also caught stealing once in the contest. He finishes the series against the Cubs 8-for-14, and his average on the season is up to .296 as a result. He's not a .300 hitter, but he won't kill a team in average and the Nationals are going to let him run as much as he wants so he's a fine mixed league option.

Nyjer Morgan was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases in a loss to the Astros on Friday night.
Morgan is 11-for-34 (.324) with five stolen bases since being traded to the Nationals on June 30.

Five minutes after play resumed following a two-month wait, Nyjer Morgan scored on a game-ending error as the Nationals beat the Astros in 11 innings.
The game was suspended on May 5 with the winning run, in the form of Elijah Dukes, on base in the bottom of the 11th. After play resumed tonight, Josh Willingham singled and Josh Bard hit a grounder up the middle. It looked like a double-play ball, but Miguel Tejada's relay from first was wild and Morgan, who had pinch-ran for the since-demoted Dukes, came around to score, ending the game at 11-10. Joel Hanrahan, now a Pirate after being part of the trade that brought Morgan to Washington, was the winning pitcher for the Nationals.

Nyjer Morgan finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored Sunday to lead the Nationals over the Braves 5-3.
Morgan hadn't tallied a hit since swinging over to Washington in last week's trade. He caught fire this afternoon, knocking two doubles and a singled while upping his season-long RBI total to 28. He also has 20 stolen bases and is providing the Nationals with a sure-handed center field. We didn't like the trade, but Morgan should still have value in NL-only leagues.

Nationals acquired OF Nyjer Morgan and LHP Sean Burnett from the Pirates for OF Lastings Milledge and RHP Joel Hanrahan.
Morgan, who turns 29 on Thursday, was batting .277 with 27 RBI, 39 runs scored and 18 stolen bases for the Pirates. He'll give the Nationals a more sure-handed center fielder, but is four years older than Milledge and doesn't possess comparable talent or upside. This deal seems like a real win for the Pirates, who quickly just got younger and more talented.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to a trade that will send OF Nyjer Morgan and LHP Sean Burnett to the Nationals for OF Lastings Milledge and RHP Joel Hanrahan.
Hanrahan struggled out of the gate this season, but many think his troubles were related to overuse in the WBC. He's a better bet for future success than Sean Burnett. Milledge is currently recovering from a broken finger, but is a younger and more promising all-around talent than Morgan, who is batting .277/.351/.356 this season with 27 RBI and 18 stolen bases. The move seems like a win for the Pirates, and coincides with the club's ongoing rebuilding efforts.

Nyjer Morgan was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in a win over the Royals on Friday night.
Morgan was one of three Pirates to go deep. Jack Wilson and Jason Jaramillo chipped in with solo shots. Morgan has two homers in his last nine games after hitting just one in the first 145 games of his career. He's batting .267/.347/.351 with two homers, 27 RBI and 18 stolen bases this season.

Nyjer Morgan hit his second career home run in a loss to the Twins on Tuesday night.
One of those nights. His only other career home run came on September 25, 2007 against the Diamondbacks. He had just seven homers in 1,980 minor league at-bats, so for those who grabbed him with stolen bases in mind, this is a night to file away and cherish, maybe put on your mantle.

Nyjer Morgan was ejected in the fifth-inning of Tuesday's game.
After he was called out on the back end of a 1-6-3 double play, Morgan slammed his helmet into the dirt and directed a few choice words at first base umpire Tim McClelland. He was 0-for-3 before the ejection.

Nyjer Morgan (hamstring) is hoping to return to the lineup Tuesday.
"It's just when I'm doing my bases, when I'm doing my turn, I just have that little tight feeling," Morgan said Monday. "Nothing major. I guess one more day, and then I should be able to go. But I don't want to push it or do anything stupid." Delwyn Young has been filling in at the leadoff spot.
