49ers LB Takeo Spikes is considered "day to day" after leaving last Thursday's game with a hamstring injury.
Veteran Matt Wilhelm played well in Spikes' place late in the game and would get the start at "Ted" linebacker if Spikes can't play this week.

49ers ILB Takeo Spikes left Thursday's game against the Bears with a hamstring injury.
Spikes is out for the game. He was surprisingly replaced by Matt Wilhelm, not rookie Scott McKillop, at "Ted" linebacker.

49ers ILB Takeo Spikes has a sprained right shoulder and is considered day-to-day.
Spikes' MRI revealed the sprain. He left the loss to the Texans early and did not return. Spikes, 32, was replaced by rookie Scott McKillop. Spikes' status for this week's game against the Colts is unknown.

49ers ILB Takeo Spikes suffered a shoulder "strain" in Sunday's loss.
Spikes did not return, and coach Mike Singletary doesn't know the injury's extent. Rookie Scott McKillop finished the game at "Ted" linebacker.

49ers re-signed ILB Takeo Spikes to a two-year contract.
Terms have not been disclosed, but it's likely in the $7-$10 million range. Spikes, 32, worked well with Patrick Willis and finished second on the team in tackles last season. He may not make it to year two of the contract at his age, but Spikes was worth retaining. San Francisco will still likely consider inside linebacker a need area entering the draft.

The 49ers say talks with free agent ILB Takeo Spikes are moving in a "positive" direction.
Spikes earned a little over $1 million last season and was highly productive. The 32-year-old will probably want a 2-3 year deal in the $7-10M range.

Potential free agent Takeo Spikes says he wants to re-sign with the 49ers.
Spikes was a positive locker room influence and complements Patrick Willis well at inside linebacker. The 49ers should be able to retain him for a two-year deal in the $5-7 million range. Spikes made 96 tackles in 2008.

Takeo Spikes has surpassed Jeff Ulbrich as the 49ers' starting inside linebacker next to Patrick Willis.
Spikes offers a little more upside and athleticism than Ulbrich at the "Ted" spot, but he isn't typically a threat for more than 4-5 tackles per week.

Jeff Ulbrich continues to start at "Ted" inside linebacker for the 49ers, but Takeo Spikes is now seeing three times as many snaps there.
Spikes had two tackles (one solo) to Ulbrich's one against the Lions. There won't be consistent production coming from this position all season.

Takeo Spikes and Jeff Ulbrich will both see time at the "Ted" linebacker in the season opener.
Coach Mike Nolan would not name a starter, but it's expected that Ulbrich will play more early in the season with Spikes gradually taking over.

49ers signed LB Takeo Spikes, formerly of the Eagles.
Spikes is coming off extensive shoulder surgery, but could prove an upgrade over Jeff Ulbrich at the 49ers' "Ted" inside linebacker position next to Patrick Willis. That isn't a hot spot for tackles, as the Ted often has to take on offensive guards so Willis can run free. Either way, this is a fine risk for the Niners. Whatever speed Spikes has lost due to age (31) will be less obvious in Mike Nolan's 3-4 scheme than it would've been in a 4-3 defense.

The 49ers have renewed contract talks with free agent LB Takeo Spikes.
If signed, Spikes would line up in the "ted" position alongside Patrick Willis. Veteran Brandon Moore, off to a slow start in camp, could be released if Spikes is brought on board.

The Lions hope to sign free agent Takeo Spikes before training camp starts on Thursday morning.
The Lions could use him on the strong side as a competitor with Paris Lenon. He's continuing to look at other options. The Lions should use the time to focus on getting their seven unsigned draft picks under contract.

Free agent LB Takeo Spikes visited with the Lions last week.
The Lions run a strict 4-3 and Spikes is a weak-side linebacker in that scheme. Detroit does not have a need there behind Ernie Sims. If Spikes wants a decent shot at playing time, he'll go to San Francisco or Cleveland.

Free agent Takeo Spikes is reportedly in search of a contract that would pay him in the neighborhood of $2.5 million per season.
Um, he might want to change agents. We'd be surprised if Spikes got half that annually. He turns 32 late this year, made few big plays in Philadelphia last season, and tore his rotator cuff. A deal for the minimum is reasonable.

In addition to the 49ers, the Patriots, Browns, and Saints are reportedly interested in free agent LB Takeo Spikes.
The Saints can never have enough injury-prone linebackers. The Pats would likely provide Spikes his best chance to start, but may be offering the least money. The Niners are said to be unconcerned about Spikes' balky shoulder.

The 49ers are unconcerned about free agent LB Takeo Spikes' ability to recover from shoulder surgery and believe he'd be ready for training camp.
The team remains interested in signing the veteran linebacker, but Spikes has been seeking a better contract elsewhere. If no team steps up, he's likely to sign with San Francisco to be the team's "ted" linebacker next season.

Free agent Takeo Spikes will visit with the 49ers on Thursday, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
Spikes would likely move inside in San Francisco's 3-4 scheme and compete with Dontarrious Thomas, Jeff Ulbrich, and Brandon Moore at the TED spot.

Eagles released LB Takeo Spikes.
This is a sudden change from their previous public stance that Spikes would return. The former Bengal and Bill is recovering from torn rotator cuff surgery and has been an average player since tearing his Achilles a few years back. Omar Gaither could move to the outside now.

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson expects WLB Takeo Spikes (shoulder surgery) to be "fine" in time for the season.
Spikes is coming off a torn rotator cuff. There has been speculation that the Birds might release him and shift Omar Gaither outside, but they seem likely to at least bring Spikes to camp. He is owed $5 million in 2008.
