Jan. 18 - 1:08 pm et
Beat writer Matt Maiocco says RCB Shawntae Spencer "played last season at a championship level."
While the left corner spot was a problem area for the Niners, Spencer was more than solid. The 2004 second-round pick is clearly over his torn ACL and has a lock on the starting job heading into 2010.

The 49ers have named Shawntae Spencer their starting right cornerback, over Dre' Bly and Tarell Brown.
Brown is the top talent here, but missed most of camp due to injury. The injury-prone Spencer has just one start since 2006. The Niners will likely end up rotating RCBs throughout the season, so don't count on much IDP value.

The 49ers expect CB Shawntae Spencer (ACL surgery) to be ready for training camp.
He was a possible cap casualty this winter, but is needed now. Spencer, Tarell Brown, and possibly Dre' Bly will battle to replace Walt Harris in August. Brown has the most talent, though, and Spencer fits best as a nickel back.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer is a candidate to be released this offseason.
Spencer's cap number is close to $3.5 million, and he's due a $500,000 roster bonus. Coming off an injury-plagued season and no longer viewed as a starter, Spencer's days in San Fran are numbered.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer will be placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL in his left knee, ending his season.
Spencer missed last week's game after injuring the knee in Week 2 against the Seahawks. Tarell Brown and Donald Strickland will compete to fill Spencer's role. Rookie Reggie Smith will likely also get a shot on defense.

Despite his official status as day-to-day, the 49ers fear that Shawntae Spencer could have a serious knee injury.
Once the swelling goes down, they may find that Spencer will need ACL surgery. A definitive answer is expected by the weekend.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer has been ruled out for Week 13 with an injured quadriceps.
CB/FS Marcus Hudson (PCL sprain) will also miss this week's game, meaning the 49ers will be without their best two reserve corners. CB Donald Strickland will likely see time as the nickel back in Hudson's absence.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer (foot surgery) is being held out of OTAs.
He's behind in his battle to start with Walt Harris after initially being expected to take part in these workouts. WR Darrell Jackson (turf toe), G Justin Smiley (shoulder) and LT Jonas Jennings (shoulder) are also being held out.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer underwent foot surgery last week.
Spencer had bone spurs removed, but is expected to be ready for late-May OTAs. This won't help his chances of overtaking Walt Harris to start.

Shawntae Spencer and Walt Harris will compete to be the 49ers' starting right cornerback now that Nate Clements has landed in San Francisco.
Harris was a Pro Bowler last year but Spencer has the bigger contract. Still, the general feeling is that Spencer would be better suited for a nickel role at this stage. Either way, Harris will move inside on passing downs.

San Francisco CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle) has been upgraded to probable for tomorrow night's game against the Seahawks.
Spencer, a marginal IDP option this year, has not played since Week 11. Given the other injuries to the 49ers secondary, getting Spencer back is crucial to defending the Seattle wide receivers.

Shawntae Spencer (questionable, ankle) is expected to practice Tuesday.
Spencer has missed the past three games. Sammy Davis (quad) and Donald Strickland (knee) have been ruled out for Thursday's game, so the Niners are desperate. They'll be down to sixth-round rookie Marcus Hudson and benched safety Mike Adams at corner if Spencer can't play.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle) is questionable to play in Week 13.
Spencer missed last Sunday's game with an ankle sprain, although San Francisco's replacement covermen did nice work on Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce. Still give Saints wideouts an upgrade if Spencer is out again.

49ers CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle) is reportedly unlikely to play Sunday.

CB Shawntae Spencer (ankle) practiced Wednesday.
