Five GMs and/or scouts tell Yahoo Sports that they believe Vernon Davis deserves "real consideration" to make the Pro Bowl this year.
"Davis has been special this season," said one. "Always a good blocker, but now he’s a real threat in the passing game. He finally seems to know what he’s doing." Davis is also the No. 2 overall tight end in fantasy football.

49ers coach Mike Singletary defended Vernon Davis after the tight end drew heat for his pregame encounter with Bears DE Adewale Ogunleye.
"Vernon is growing up," Singletary said. "I don't think he knows how important he is to this team. He's just got so much energy and he's an emotional guy and you need those guys to win a championship." The offensive captain has stayed out of Singletary's doghouse all season.

Vernon Davis was held to 16 yards on three catches against the Bears in Week 10.
Davis was targeted just five times while Alex Smith attempted just 23 passes in a game that skewed toward the run in the final three quarters. His biggest impact on offense was a pair of false start penalties. He won't be the No. 1 fantasy tight end after this weekend, but he's still a must-start against the Packers next week.

Vernon Davis (shoulder) is listed as probable for Thursday night's game after practicing fully again on Wednesday.
The No. 1 fantasy tight end in the league and will start against Chicago. He's always a good bet for a touchdown, and to lead the 49ers in receiving.

Vernon Davis (shoulder) returned to a full practice on Tuesday.
Look for a probable listing before Thursday night's matchup with Chicago. Davis overtook Owen Daniels to be the No. 1 fantasy tight end by catching 10 balls for 102 yards last week. He also has an NFL-high seven receiving TDs.

49ers offensive captain Vernon Davis provided plenty of bulletin board fodder for the Bears Tuesday, saying his team could "destroy their front."
"I think we can destroy their front. I don't see anything spectacular about their front line," added Davis. "Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well." Davis is playing at a high level, but his comments won't go over well with his own head coach -- or in the Bears locker room.

Vernon Davis caught 10 passes for 102 yards against the Titans in Week 9.
Davis was a monster, catching passes all over the field. He's developed an obvious chemistry with Alex Smith, and he's a physical mismatch for opposing linebackers and strong safeties. He should continue to put up top-5 tight end numbers the rest of the way, and could challenge Dallas Clark for the top tight end spot.

Vernon Davis does not anticipate taking on an increased pass-blocking role despite the loss of 49ers LT Joe Staley (knee).
"There's confidence to rely on Barry Sims to get it done (at left tackle)," Davis said. This is a slight concern going forward with Staley out 6-8 weeks, but Davis would be impossible to sit in fantasy. He leads the NFL in receiving touchdowns, and Week 9 opponent Tennessee has a mediocre pass rush.

Vernon Davis caught three passes for 20 yards and one touchdown in Week 8 against the Colts.
Davis made a nice catch over the middle in the second quarter for his NFL-leading seventh touchdown, including four scores in six quarters with Alex Smith at the helm. He wasn't a huge part of the offense overall, but Davis' breakout season rolls on.

Vernon Davis caught seven balls for 93 yards and three touchdowns in Week 7 against the Texans.
If you doubted Davis' breakout year before, you can't anymore. He was nothing short of dominant after Alex Smith replaced Shaun Hill at halftime, and clearly is the first read in red-zone situations. He's an every-week starter.

Oct. 14 - 12:11 am et
Vernon Davis led the 49ers in targets (12) and played every snap in the team's Week 5 loss to Atlanta.
Davis, the No. 4 fantasy tight end overall, is on pace to catch 71 passes for 839 yards and 10 touchdowns, which would all be career highs. He is easily first on the Niners in targets with 39 (Isaac Bruce is a distant second, with 29) and has settled in as San Francisco's top passing-game option.

Vernon Davis caught five passes for 51 yards against the Falcons in Week 5.
Davis was targeted 12 times, but he was out of synch with Shaun Hill for much of the afternoon. He appeared to run the wrong route on at least three plays. Davis now has at least 40 yards in four out of five games, but he goes on bye in Week 6.

Vernon Davis caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' rout of the Rams on Sunday afternoon.
Davis beat Rams rookie linebacker James Laurinaitis over the middle to catch his touchdown in the back of the end zone in the second half. VD is easily Shaun Hill's favorite target when the team is in the red zone. He'll be up against the Falcons' linebackers and safeties next week.

Vernon Davis caught seven passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns in Week 3 against the Vikings.
This one should get him out of the doghouse for good. Davis got a goal line touchdown in the second quarter and then went off for 70 yards on five grabs after halftime, including a leaping 20-yard score on a seam route that saw him hang on despite a big hit. Davis has 168 yards on 14 catches in three games after totaling 31-358-2 last season, so the light may finally be coming on.

Sep. 20 - 7:39 pm et
Vernon Davis caught two balls for 32 yards in a Week 2 win.
Davis is likely to finish 2009 as a top-15 fantasy tight end, but the Niners are spreading it around and using a decidedly run-first attack. He's subject to down games, which keeps Davis as more of a TE2 with upside.

Sep. 16 - 9:48 am et
ESPN's John Clayton says that 49ers are making sure Vernon Davis gets at least five-to-seven targets per game.
It's a 180 from last year, when Mike Martz would call a pass play to Davis once or twice a game. In Week 1, Davis saw seven targets and came up with five catches for 40 yards. Clayton says the Niners view Davis as their most dangerous offensive weapon, including Frank Gore. He is a TE2 with upside.

Vernon Davis caught five passes for 40 yards against the Cardinals in Week 1.
As expected, Davis is no longer kept in at the line scrimmage on passing downs. He was having a quiet game until Shaun Hill targeted him five times for 35 yards on the 15-play game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.

Sep. 10 - 10:32 am et
49ers coach Mike Singletary called Vernon Davis as one of his locker room leaders.
Davis was in Singletary's very public doghouse last season after the tight end inspired the "I want winners!" rant. Davis has also had his focus and work ethic questioned by teammates. So to hear Singletary actually call Davis a leader is a good sign for the highly talented but annual fantasy bust.

Count Frank Gore as another Niner that wants to see more maturity out of Vernon Davis.
Davis got into yet another training camp fight. "I just feel it's his fourth year now, and I told him it shouldn't be him now," Gore said. "Everybody makes mistakes but it shouldn't be him. ... It's time to be a man and try to do everything right." If Davis ever got his head on straight, he's a serious talent.

The entire 49ers roster had to run 12 gassers at a recent practice because Vernon Davis got into a fight.
Davis also got a talking-to from Mike Singletary. "I told them they should be happy that I made them run because it's extra work for us and a chance for us to get better, keep our lungs going," Davis said. We like Davis to outdo his 15th-round ADP this year, but he still presents plenty of Knucklehead Factor.
