Free agent S Jimmy Williams has been suspended for "at least" one year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, according to Howard Balzer.
No wonder the 49ers gave up on him so quick. The 37th pick overall in 2006, Williams has turned out to be a complete bust. We may not see him again.

49ers waived S Jimmy Williams.
Williams' weight still wasn't where it needed to be after he signed a "two-year" deal in January. The 25-year-old should get another shot elsewhere.

Futures contract signee Jimmy Williams weighed 220 pounds when the 49ers added him to their roster in January.
It's a start for Williams, whose weight was an issue during his Atlanta days. Williams' playing weight is 216. The former Virginia Tech corner will be tried at free safety in San Francisco, so getting closer to 200 would be ideal.

49ers signed S Jimmy Williams.
The former second-round bust hasn't played since the Falcons' new coaching staff unceremoniously dumped him last June. Suspended by the NFL for five games last August, Williams' attitude problems go all the way back to his Virginia Tech days.

Former Falcons S Jimmy Williams has been suspended five games by the NFL.
No word on the reason behind the punishment. The disappointing Williams has been out of work since he ran afoul of the new Falcons coaching staff in June. With this news, he has about as much of a chance to hitch on with a new team as Cedric Benson does.

Falcons released S Jimmy Williams.
Another brutal pick by former GM Rich McKay falls by the wayside. The 2006 second-round round pick was once thought to have top-10 talent, but he's proven too slow to play cornerback and not tough enough to play safety. He should still get a second chance elsewhere.

Falcons S Jimmy Williams revealed that he showed up to minicamps overweight.
Williams, who's listed at 6'2/212, showed up weighing 230. "They're a little upset about that," Williams said. "They want me like 215. Me at 215 is skinny." Williams, a second-round pick in 2006, continues to run as Atlanta's third-string free safety. He blamed the weight gain on personal issues.

Falcons S Jimmy Williams says he did not participate in the final two days of the team's pre-draft minicamp due to personal reasons.
It sounds like he was up front with the team. "I talked to (coach Mike Smith) and he understood my situation," Williams said. "My priority was making sure that they understood." He ran as a third-stringer the one day he did attend.

Updating a previous item, DB Jimmy Williams did show up to the first day of Falcons minicamp, but left on day two.
Initial reports indicated that Williams skipped the workout altogether, not that him up and leaving is any more beneficial. Williams ran as Atlanta's No. 3 free safety behind Erik Coleman and Antoine Harris before departing.

Falcons DB Jimmy Williams skipped the team's first minicamp.
Bad move. While the workouts are "voluntary," Williams has too much to prove to be skipping any opportunities to shine. The 2006 second-round pick was the only Falcons player under contract to not show up on Monday.

With Antoine Harris playing over him in passing situations and Chris Crocker beating him out to start at free safety, Jimmy Williams has been relegated to special-teams work.
Quite a fall for the 2006 second-round pick who was penciled in as a starter heading into the season. "We're just trying to get Jimmy doing a little bit better on special teams," defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. "That's really what it is."

Chris Crocker is dealing with a knee injury, but the 2006 second-round pick has stepped up his play during practice and may have won the job on merit.

Jimmy Williams has been getting most of the reps as the Falcons' starting free safety at training camp.
Chris Crocker is dealing with a knee problem, but Williams appears to be separating himself. The Falcons are high on Williams' hitting and coverage ability, but their secondary will likely be a liability no matter who wins the gig.

Falcons FS Jimmy Williams was reportedly charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession in early June.
Great timing for this to come out. Williams says he is innocent, but is scheduled to be in court on December 3. The 2006 second-round pick had been penciled in as Atlanta's starting free safety, ahead of Chris Crocker.

Jimmy Williams is reportedly struggling in his conversion to free safety.
The new coaching staff in Atlanta believes Williams is too stiff to ever be a cornerback in the NFL. The former Virginia Tech player has been a disappointment since being drafted in the second round.

The Falcons will move Jimmy Williams to free safety this season.
Last year's second-round pick had been penciled in at right cornerback until the team stole Chris Houston with the No. 41 overall pick. Williams and incumbent Chris Crocker will compete at the free safety spot.

Falcons coach Bobby Petrino says that Jimmy Williams would enter training camp as the team's starting cornerback.
At this time a year ago, some thought Williams could be a top-ten pick. He fell to the middle of the second round and had a terrible rookie year, but Petrino sees something he likes.

Rookie corner Jimmy Williams will start this week for the Falcons.
The fact that special teamer Allen Rossum has been starting over Williams is a major knock on Williams, the coaching staff, and/or the team's scouting department. The high profile second-rounder hasn't stepped up despite many injuries in Atlanta.
