Updating a previous item, Profootballtalk.com is reporting that RT Marvel Smith will indeed retire.
Smith won two Super Bowls with the Steelers and made one Pro Bowl. He was signed as a free agent by the 49ers in March, but back injuries led to him losing out on a starting job.

According to 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco, there's a strong chance RT Marvel Smith will retire.
Maiocco says Smith has not looked right physically since signing an incentive-laden two-year deal in March. Smith was excused from this weekend's Dallas trip for personal reasons, fueling the retirement speculation. The former Pro Bowler lost out to Adam Snyder for the starting right tackle job.

Marvel Smith is not guaranteed to start at right tackle for the 49ers this season.
Smith, coming off of back surgery, was held out of 11-on-11 drills during OTAs as a precaution. He's officially battling Adam Snyder, but he should have no problem winning the job as long as he's healthy this summer.

49ers agreed to terms with OT Marvel Smith on a two-year contract. The deal's max worth is roughly $10.5 million.
The 49ers are taking a calculated gamble. They're likely guaranteeing Smith little money and have Barry Sims and Adam Snyder in reserve if Smith can't overcome his back woes, which cost him 15 games over the last two seasons. Smith, 31, was a Pro Bowl left tackle in 2005. He will play right tackle in San Francisco. The Niners hope he'll be a run-blocking asset there.

Contract talks between the 49ers and free agent OT Marvel Smith have reportedly heated up.
The Niners came away satisfied with Smith's physical and a deal could happen "in the next couple days." He would play right tackle in San Francisco.

The 49ers have extended an offer to free agent OT Marvel Smith.
Provided he can stay healthy, Smith would be a significant upgrade on Barry Sims and Adam Snyder. He's expected to take the weekend to decide whether to accept San Fran's offer.

The 49ers will host free agent OT Marvel Smith on Wednesday.
Smith was a left tackle in Pittsburgh, but would play the strong side in San Francisco. The Niners will likely give him a physical at the visit. Many teams appear to have failed him so far, presumably because of his bad back.

Free agent LT Marvel Smith (back surgery) says he will be "as close to 100 percent" as he will ever be by next month.
Smith is trying to rehab his value after missing chunks of the last two seasons due to a bad back. His best bet may be to sign a one-year deal to prove he can stay healthy before entering free agency again next season.

The Steelers' re-signing of Max Starks "assures" that LT Marvel Smith will leave in free agency, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
A potent all-around tackle when healthy, Smith will have suitors but it remains to be seen if he can pass physicals. He has chronic back problems and has missed 15 starts in the last four years. Smith may only get short-term offers.

The Steelers are expected to make a push to re-sign either Marvel Smith or Max Starks prior to the start of the free-agent signing period.
Smith is easily the better player, but his ongoing back problems make him a poor bet to make it through a full season. Although the Steelers often have to protect Starks at the line, he's started at right and left tackle on the team's two Super Bowl winning teams this decade.

Steelers placed T Marvel Smith (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Smith's back problems have become chronic and he could need more surgery. He hasn't played in ten weeks and is entering free agency. This injury could wind up killing his market and keeping Smith cheap for Pittsburgh. Max Starks, who has improved his play to mediocre lately, will finish the year at left tackle.

Steelers T Marvel Smith (back) has been ruled out for Thursday game, and doctors are trying to determine whether he should have back surgery.
Coach Mike Tomlin said he didn't know at this point whether Smith would have the surgery, but he did say that the back problems are unrelated to last year's. Max Starks will continue to start in Smith's place.
