Padres manager Bud Black said Monday that Joe Thatcher (shoulder) is close to playing catch. Thatcher has been limited in the early days of the exhibition schedule due to shoulder soreness, but the Padres don't appear too concerned right now. The 29-year-old southpaw had the same issue last spring and actually opened the season on the disabled list before finishing with a sparkling 1.29 ERA and 45/7 K/BB ratio over 35 innings.
