Derek Boogaard: Derek Boogaard's cause of death not yet known

    Derek Boogaard - W - NYR - May. 15 - 12:26 pm et

Medical examiners were expected to conduct an autopsy on the body of Derek Boogaard Saturday to determine the cause of death, however the results likely will not be released for some time.
"I don't think we have any answers as to what happened or why it happened," said Ron Salcer, Boogaard's agent. The news has shocked the hockey world, as many former teammates have characterized him as a gentle, thoughtful player off the ice, which is a stark contrast to his on-ice demeanor. Due to the head injuries believed to have been sustained by Boogaard during his playing career, many have attempted to use this to explain his passing, but there is no evidence to support that theory as of this time. The Boogaard family has agreed to donate his brain to Boston University researchers as they examine brain disease in athletes. We'll pass along more news regarding this tragic story as it becomes available. May. 15 - 12:26 pm et
