The big German defender has come down with an illness and did not make the trip to Sunderland with the Arsenal squad.

Both Mesut Ozil and Mertesacker are ill but while the defender did not make the trip the playmaker did at least travel. As far as Arsenal's likely defensive alignment, Thomas Vermaelen is back in training but unlikely to be ready to start. This means that Bakary Sagna is likely to slide into a central role with Carl Jenkinson coming in at right back.

Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has flown back from the club's pre-season training camp in Seattle ahead of a potential move to Swansea.

So after a week of rumours linking Sigurdsson to Crystal Palace after a fee was agreed, it appears the midfielder is returning to his former club Swansea. The 24-year-old is set to have a medical on Tuesday as part of a straight swap for Swansea's Wales full-back Ben Davies. The move makes sense for both the clubs and the player, and would also be good news for fantasy managers, with Sigurdsson likely to be handed a first team role and set piece duty if the transfer goes through.

Tottenham have opened talks with Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm over a potential move to White Hart Lane, according to Sky sources.

This story comes as a bit of a surprise, with Vorm set to join Tottenham to provide back-up to Hugo Lloris. Sky Sports are reporting the 30-year-old Netherlands international has been granted permission to speak to Spurs after the Premier League clubs agreed a fee over the weekend, thought to be in the region of £5million. Vorm was set to have to battle it out with new signing Lukas Fabianski at the Liberty Stadium and appears to have decided he would rather compete with Lloris at White Hart Lane, where he is likely to be handed the jersey for Tottenham's domestic cup and Europa League matches if the deal goes through.

Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo has broken his foot.

What a blow for Negredo, who had been working his way back to full fitness after a should injury ruined the second half of last season. The 28-year-old was injured in a friendly against Hearts on Friday and is likely to be out of action for at least three months.

Manchester United have reportedly signed German defender Mats Hummels for a fee of $28 million.

$28 million is a fair price for a defender of his caliber, as Hummels showed in the World Cup that he is a World Class defender. He fills an immediate need for Manchester United's new manager Louis van Gaal and should be a starter on day one. van Gaal is an attacking minded coach but Manchester's defensive line is looking better and better and Hummels should be a great fantasy option if he does indeed join the Premier League.

Patrice Evra's long-rumored move from Manchester United to Juventus has been confirmed by the Turin club via their official Twitter account.

Manchester United have had an interesting summer at the left back position. Seldom-used reserve Alex Buttner left early in the transfer window after Luke Shaw arrived for a wildly expensive fee. Evra's departure means that Manchester United have a 19-year-old and not much else at the position. Recruiting a high quality reserve (Ricardo Rodriguez and Daley Blind) will be difficult because it will be (rightly) hard to convince anyone with prospects that Luke Shaw won't get the majority of the minutes. At the same time, it will be hard for Louis Van Gaal to rely on such a young player consistently when the stakes get higher. United's next step will be very interesting.

Queens Park Rangers are interested in Cardiff defender Steven Caulker who is up for grabs after Cardiff were relegated last season.

Caulker is a quality defender and a great leader who captained Cardiff last season. Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already acknowledged that Caulker and Campbell Frazier are on the way out and QPR are reportedly in the hunt for Caulker. QPR have signed veteran center-back Rio Ferdinand but it's unknown if he can stay healthy and a defender of Caulker's quality will certainly help their chances of avoiding relegation. If Caulker ends on a team where he will be a starting defender, he will have good fantasy value as he's very active in chasing down players and getting in front of the ball to block shots.

Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland has said that a decision on Romelu Lukaku is unlikely to come within the next two weeks.

Chelsea have signed striker Diego Costa and reports have surfaced about the return of Didier Drogba, making it unlikely for them to keep the Belgian star. Jose Mourinho wants to evaluate the striker before making a final decision. Lukaku has spend the last two seasons away on loan but there are rumors Chelsea might be trying to secure a permanent move for him away from Stamford Bridge. German side Wolfsburg are reportedly ready to offer a £20 million bid and Everton, where Lukaku spent last season on loan, are also interested in his services. Lukaku will have significantly higher fantasy value at Everton than at Chelsea.

John Terry scored twice to help Chelsea come from behind and win their first friendly of the summer against AFC Wimbledon.

AFC Wimbledon took a 2-0 lead in the first half but Jose Mourinho made eight changes at the break and his side came back to win 3-2. Mohamed Salah scored one while John Terry added two. John Terry took the summer off after not being called up to England's World Cup squad and will look to have a successful season at Chelsea. He should be a premium fantasy option considering Jose Mourinho's defensive approach and Chelsea tendency to earn clean sheets. Young midfielder Lewis Baker played great and was involved in all three goals, making a case towards a first-team call up this season.

Reports have surfaced about Didier Drogba striking a one-year deal with his former club, Chelsea.

Chelsea were after the star striker last summer but couldn't land a deal. Drogba is now a free-agent after his contract with Galatasaray has expired. We envision the Ivory Coast international to take on a role similar to the one he played in the World Cup this summer. Drogba is likely to come off a bench when Chelsea need a goal and provide a target man for long balls and crosses. The arrival is worry-some for Fernando Torres, whose playing time might decrease even more with Drogba in town.

New Southampton manager Ronald Koeman had admitted that Ron Vlaar is a possible target for Southampton if Dejan Lovren forces a move away from the Saints.

There have been rumors about Lovren being unhappy at Southampton and that he is trying to force a move to Liverpool. If he can force the move, Southampton will need to replace him and Ron Vlaar is reportedly a target. Vlaar had an amazing World Cup, leading his Netherlands side to a third-place finish. Vlaar's fantasy value would be about the same whether he leaves Aston Villa or goes to Southampton.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has confirmed that the club have reached an agreement with Liverpool over the sale of striker Fabio Borini.

Borini played an important role on loan at Sunderland last season, scoring some vital goals in the run-in as the Black Cats escape relegation, and had stated he was looking forward to taking that form back to Liverpool. However, despite Luis Suarez's sale the 23-year-old would still find himself behind Daniel Sturridge, Ricky Lambert and the incoming Loic Remy, so the next best option for Borini would be to return to the Stadium of Light. Manager Gus Poyet has confirmed a fee has been agreed, reportedly £14million, and the club are now free to discuss personal terms with the player.
