Jermain Defoe scored twice as Tottenham powered past Aston Villa and into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a comfortable 4-0 away win.

Defoe impressed again with two goals and an assist and he could soon be pushing Roberto Soldado for a league start if this form continues. The improving Lewis Holtby had another excellent game with three assists while Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were also on the scoresheet. Andre Villas-Boas will be delighted with his team's start to the season - Tottenham have played nine games in all competitions, winning eight of them and conceding just one goal.

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma has joined Stoke City on a season-long loan deal.

The French international has signed new six-year contract with Chelsea as he joins the Potters on loan for the 2017/18 campaign. Zouma, who joined Chelsea from Saint-Etienne in January 2014, completes the temporary move to the Bet365 Stadium in search of regular first-team football. The 22-year-old was limited to 13 appearances last season, having recovered from a serious knee injury in 2016, and was not expected to see many starts this term despite the departures of John Terry and Nathan Ake. Stoke City boss Mark Hughes told the club's official website: "Kurt is undoubtedly one of the most talented young defenders in the game, so naturally his arrival will enhance our playing squad for the forthcoming campaign. We have prioritised adding further strength in depth to defensive positions this summer, and we have certainly done that by fending off any number of clubs who were all interested in taking Kurt on loan."

Aleksander Kolarov will move to Serie A club Roma once Pep Guardiola has rubber stamped the deal.

The Serbian international is currently on City’s pre-season tour of America but if Guardiola can close the deal on Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, then Kolarov has been given permission to return to the Italian capital. "He helped me a lot last season in terms of many, many things. But he had a big chance to go back to Rome where he was before and he spoke to me, the club and asked me to leave. I don't like to stay with players who don't want to stay. That's why it’s the best option for everybody." An initial offer of £44.5 million for Mendy has been rejected, but City will go back with an improved bid as Monaco demand closer to £50m, the fee paid for Kyle Walker.

Romelu Lukaku was once again on the score sheet as Manchester United beat their city rivals in Texas during the early hours of Friday morning.

The two sides met as part of the International Champions Cup and it was the red half of Manchester who managed to steal the early season bragging rights with a 2-0 victory. Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring, his second in successive games while Marcus Rashford was also on hand to double the lead before the break. After the match, Jose Mourinho was quick to play down the significance of the result, although Paul Pogba "whether it is a friendly game or not, you want to win against Manchester City" took a decidedly different view: "It was a very good training session," said the United mboss. "That is what we thought when we organised the pre-season. Two matches against MLS teams and then we move on to the best teams in the world. It was a good intensity, the players are tired, I am really pleased and I am sure Pep [Guardiola] is the same."

David Silva is expected to miss the International Champions Cup game against city rivals United in Texas on Friday.

City take on Jose Mourinho's men at the NRG Stadium in the early hours [3:05am BST] but the Spanish playmaker is expected to sit this one out after picking up a groin injury in training. However, new signings Kyle Walker and goalkeeper Ederson could be in line to make their debuts while Gabriel Jesus has recovered from the fractured eye socket he sustained playing for Brazil. Leroy Sane is also back following nose surgery but Ilkay Gundogan is still missing due to a serious knee ligament injury [ruptured ACL].

Glenn Whelan has officially moved from Stoke City to Aston Villa on a permanent transfer in a deal that could net the Potters £2 million if incentives are hit.

The news that the 33-year-old Whelan is leaving the Britannia Stadium for Villa Park seems to fan the rumors that Mark Hughes has a new holding midfielder lined up in the form of former Aston Villa man Fabian Delph. Stoke City have been rivaling West Brom for Delph's signature in a move reported to be worth around £10 million and this is likely an indication that the Potters have won the race.

Everton confirm Ramiro Funes Mori will miss the majority of 2017/18 after suffering a setback in training.

The Times [UK] correspondent – Paul Joyce – revealed last week that Everton could be forced back into the transfer market after Funes Mori had more surgery in Barcelona to address continuing problems in his left knee. The defender originally damaged his meniscus while representing Argentina in a World Cup qualifying game back in March, but following a small medical procedure, he was expected to be ready for pre-season. However, in a statement by the club on Wednesday, they confirmed Funes Mori faces even more time out, although specific details have not been released: "[He] will require prolonged rehabilitation of a minimum of six to nine months." The setback leaves the Toffees a little short defensively, particularly on the left-hand side, and Koeman will want to address the issue ahead of the season opener [vs Stoke City] with no cover for Leighton Baines.
