Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a wonderful opening goal but Spurs made tough work of Hull, eventually winning via a thrilling penalty shoot-out.

It really was a great strike by Sigurdsson, who has been in fine goalscoring form for Spurs this season. Hull pegged their opponents back after a scrappy fumble by Brad Friedel led to an own goal and then took the lead via Paul McShane in extra time, before Harry Kane levelled. Friedel made amends with two penalty saves in the shoot-out as the home side ran out 8-7 winners.

Leicester City ended their Champions League group phase on a sour note after they were thumped 5-0 by FC Porto, the heaviest defeat for an English side in the competitions history.

In a much-changed Foxes line-up, only captain Wes Morgan kept his place in the XI from the loss on Wearside four days earlier. Having already qualified for the knockout phase, Claudio Ranieri saw this game as an opportunity "to see something different" and to give those players on the fringe of the first team an opportunity to prove their worth, but some "missed their chance." Danny Drinkwater came in for his first game in a fortnight, the midfielder is currently serving a three-game domestic ban, but the sight of him limping off with a knee injury after 76 minutes is a concern although Ranieri played down fears post-match: "It doesn't look serious," he said. "He is suspended for Saturday anyway, but he should be ok."

Dusan Tadic is closing in on a return to action after missing almost a month due to a broken nose.

The Serbian attacker was injured while representing his country in a World Cup qualifier against Wales in November. Despite his initial optimism that he would play in a mask [versus Liverpool] just a week later, Tadic has missed Southampton’s last five matches. But, after re-joining the group, Claude Puel will consider Tadic for their Europa League contest with Hapoel Be’er Sheva: "He has come back into the training sessions for a few days and we will see if he can come back into the group for Thursday's game, or perhaps for Sunday. I don't know at the moment. It's important he continues to work, because he had three weeks without training sessions. It's a long time and it's important he can come back with a good physical level to help the team." Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy [both hamstring] remain on the sidelines.

After almost two months on the sidelines with an injured knee, Toby Alderweireld made his return to action last night in Tottenham's final Champions League group stage match.

While Tottenham put together a disappointing Champions League campaign, they ended on a positive note with a win last night that gives them a spot in the knockout stage of the Europa League and, in the 68th minute, ALderweireld was brought into the match for his first taste of action in nearly two months. Perhaps his pitch time and some training over the next couple of days will give him enough fitness to start for Spurs this weekend when they face Manchester United. Tottenham's entire preferred back line is healthy now and it couldn't have come at a better time as they enter a congested festive period. They should continue to be one of the tougher defenses in the league.

Tottenham were quickly eliminated from Champions League competition this season but a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in their final group match earns Spurs a place in the knockout stage of the Europa League.

Despite a major disappointment in this year's Champions League, Mauricio Pochettino made it pretty clear that his aspirations for a European trophy have not waned as he named a very strong XI against CSKA. What he got was Spurs most positive performance in their group stage and the club finally found success at Wembley Stadium. Dele Alli was at the center of the action for most of the evening and scored the equalizing goal on 38 minutes after CSKA has opened the scoring five minutes earlier. Harry Kane kept his consistent scoring up with the go-ahead strike just before halftime. The match was put out of reach as CSKA's keeper was the culprit in an own goal that came when Alli headed the ball on target. Perhaps the most important event of the evening, Toby Alderweireld made his first appearance back from injury as a second half substitute.

Raheem Sterling could come back into contention at Leicester City on Saturday after missing the last two games because of injury.

The 21-year-old sustained a kick to the knee at Turf Moor in game week 13, and despite training ahead of the clash with Chelsea, Sterling was not 100 percent and Pep decided to err on the side of caution. But, speaking after the 1-1 draw with Celtic, Guardiola revealed Sterling was "much better," and although he was not ready for the Champions League tie, he could return this weekend. The Citizens have three games over the next 8 days, and given the depth of Guardiola’s squad, plus his penchant for rotation, no-one is guaranteed a starting place and Sterling may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Southampton defender Jose Fonte set the record straight regarding talk of his future at the club and a rumored contract standoff.

Speculation over his future at the club with his current contract due up in the summer of 2018 was confirmed when the Saints captain confirmed he did no reject a new contract, because there wasn't an offer to begin with: "There's no contract on the table. There was in the summer, they offered me a pay rise. They didn't offer me a new contract. They offered me a pay rise which I'm entitled to discuss with my agent and entitled to say no to as well. I'm entitled to have my own opinion, so apart from that that's it." Everton and Manchester United have been linked in recent weeks with a transfer in the upcoming two windows looking very likely.

Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare said he does not know whether he will be able to make a full return from injuries sustained in a car accident.

The fullback was involved in a serious wreck in September that left him with a broken thighbone and a fractured jaw. Intially, manager Alan Pardew said the defender would miss around six months, but Souare said he is taking his recovery by the day and doesn't know fully whether he can return: "I don't know about my injury. I don't know if I can get back or not. I just put everything in the hands of God and we will see. "I got my leg broke, and my jaw, and I couldn't eat for the first month, but now I can eat, I can try to eat a little bit. The thing about my leg, it's getting there. I'm trying to do the work to make it stronger with the physio at the club."

Hull City will have to continue to skimp by at the forward position with Abel Hernandez set for hernia surgery.

The striker was set to return this week from a groin injury that has kept him out for the last month, but Hull City manager Mike Phelan confirmed Hernandez will need a minor operation to repair a hernia: "Abel will be out for three weeks. He has recovered from the groin problem but he needs a hernia operation and he’ll have that this week." Without Hernandez and Will Keane, who is ruled out for the season, Phelan can't even turn to the first team's only fit striker as Dieumerci Mbokani is serving a three-match ban for violent conduct, which means Adama Diomande looks to be the club's only option for the next two matches.
Dec 7 - 7:57 AM

Vincent Janssen will miss Wednesdays Champions League encounter with CSKA Moscow at Wembley Stadium because of injury.

The summer acquisition from Dutch outfit AZ was not part of the side which romped to a 5-0 victory over Swansea after sustaining an ankle injury during the build-up to game week 14. There has been no official update from the club to confirm how serious the problem is, but speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game, Mauricio Pochettino once again revealed Janssen would be absent from the squad. Toby Aldeweireld is expected to make his long-awaited return, but even though Ben Davies is back in training, the game will come too soon for the Wales international. A hip injury rules Erik Lamela out, although the Argentine would not be available anyway after he returned to his homeland because of a "problem with his brother".

Lucas Perez scored a hat trick within 47 minutes and the Gunners topped their group as PSG could only draw with Ludogorets in Paris as Group A play concluded on Tuesday.

It didn't look like Arsenal had much of a chance to win their group with PSG hosting their final group stage match against a Ludogorets team that Arsenal thrashed at the Emirates. The Bulgarian side did them a favor and drew 2-2 with the Ligue Un champions. Arsenal took advantage of the situation with an easy win against Basel who looked a step slow all night. Lucas Perez got the first three and then Alex Iwobi finished the scoring for the Gunners who top their Champions League group for the first time since the 2011/12 campaign.

Liverpool have received a double injury boost as Joel Matip and Sadio Mane trained with the first team on Tuesday.

Matip missed Sundays 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth after picking up an ankle injury during the home win over Sunderland in game week thirteen. The absence of the Cameroonian defender handed Lucas Leiva his third Premier League start of the season, but despite a decent performance, Jürgen Klopp will be glad to have Matip back amongst the ranks. Matip has been the pick of the Liverpool back four this season and from his 11 Premier League appearances, the 25-year-old is yet to taste defeat [8 wins and three-draws]. The Reds have travelled to Barcelona for warm weather training, and the group included Mane who picked up a knock at the Viatality. However, Daniel Sturridge remains a doubt ahead of the West Ham game as he continues his recovery from a calf injury. The England international did not travel with the rest of his teammates and will carry on his rehab at the clubs training ground [Melwood].
