Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs suffered a calf strain late in the match against Liverpool and was substituted for Thomas Vermaelen.

Nacho Monreal had already come into the match as a midfield replacement for Tomas Rosicky. Arsenal clearly have depth at left back and it will be interesting to see who Arsene Wenger picks if Gibbs isn't available to play Dortmund.

The agent of Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has vehemently denied that his client held talks with Roma to discuss a potential move to Serie A.

The rumour – fuelled by the Italian press – claimed Dzeko would be used in a deal involving fellow countryman Miralem Pjanic with the midfielder moving to the Etihad. However despite claims that Dzeko would go "running" to the Giallorossi Irfan Redzepagic [his agent] dismissed any talk as nonsense revealing Dzeko has had no contact with the club and remains happy in Manchester. Following the arrival of Wilfried Bony in January competition for game time is fierce with Sergio Aguero always likely to start if fit. Dzeko was restricted to just 11 BPL starts last season and played less than a thousand minutes – his lowest return for a full season since joining back in January, 2011.

Sammy Ameobi looks set to extend his stay at Newcastle before heading out on a season long loan deal with Championship side Cardiff City believed to be interested in signing the winger.

Ameobi enjoyed his best return in a United shirt last season but his 15 starts were maybe more indicative of the club’s plight – and lack of squad depth - rather than players ability. Ameobi has spent a number of years on Tyneside and very much like his brother – Shola – promised so much but ultimately failed to deliver. A loan spell to local rivals Middlesbrough back in 2013 was intended to kick start his career gaining first team experience but the player was once again confined to the reserves on his return. With only 21 BPL starts spread across 5 season’s time is running out for Ameobi and dropping down a level to guarantee himself some game time may not be such a bad move for the former England under-21.

Nathaniel Clyne has been pictured leaving a Merseyside hospital as his move to Liverpool is close to being completed in a deal said to be worth around $16 million with a further $4 million in add-ons.

Clyne will become the sixth signing of the window joining Milner, Bogdan, Firmino, Gomez and Ings as Brendan Rodgers revamps his squad in an attempt to challenge for domestic honours. Clyne has been pivotal during his time at St Marys’ and started all but 3 BPL games last season but having entered the final year of his contract Southampton could not risk losing their England international for nothing after the player refused a new and improved $70k per week offer. His arrival is likely to mean Emre Can is moved centrally possibly in a holding midfield role although the versatile German under-21 is capable of playing in a number of positions.

Watford have confirmed that Lloyd Doyley will remain at the club until September as the club’s longest serving defender recovers from neck surgery.

Doyley went under the knife back in May to correct a minor neck problem and will remain with the BPL new boys throughout the pre-season despite being out of contract. Doyley has spent over 14 years at the club and was until last season considered a first team regular. However the Jamaican international struggled to nail down his place during the promotion winning campaign and may now be surplus to requirements. Watford have begun already their transition into the top flight by welcoming winger Diego Perotti for a club-record $11 million fee from Genoa while Austria defender Sebastian Prodl also arrives from Werder Bremen.

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Petr Cech from Chelsea complete with the obligatory Tweeted photo of the player in an Arsenal shirt.

It isn't often that Arsene Wenger gets one over on Jose Mourinho but it appears that he has today as the North London club announce the signing of one of Mourinho's stalwarts in Petr Cech. While Cech wouldn't have played much at Stamford Bridge, he should be an improvement over David Ospina/Wojceich Szczesny and provide a significant talent boost to Arsenal over where they left off last season. Given that Arsenal were excellent over the second half of last season, things are certainly going their way heading into the start of the 2015-16 season.

Guangzhou Evergrande have announced the signing of Paulinho from Spurs for £9.9m.

Spurs have been quiet so far this summer but perhaps this is the beginning of a series of moves to clear space for some new signings. Paulinho had some solid moments for Spurs but overall, wasn't good enough to help them contend for a Champions League spot. With Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason coming up through the youth ranks to start regularly last season, Paulinho was an expensive and redundant spare part. His sale is probably the right outcome for all sides.

Sunderland are reportedly close to closing a £2 million deal to turn Sebastian Coates' loan move from Liverpool into a permanent one.

The Black Cats are going need a lot of improving if they are going to avoid a third consecutive scrape with the relegation zone. Sebastian Coates started nine matches and appeared in another as a substitute for Sunderland last season while on loan at the Stadium of Light. At 24-years-old, there is certainly still potential for growth but it's hard to imagine that Dick Advocaat is doing anything more than adding depth and maybe a little potential with this move. Probably best to ignore Coates for fantasy purposes until he forces you to do otherwise.

Crystal Palace have confirmed their interest in QPR’s Matt Phillips, but will face competition from a handful of PL clubs – Sunderland and West Brom among them…

Matt Phillips’ form was one of QPR’s few high spots last season. The winger established himself in a more influential central role under Chris Ramsey, scoring three goals and providing eight assists from just 20 starts. A number of PL clubs have already declared an interest, including Sunderland and West Brom but Palace will hope being based in London will give them an advantage. They are not short of attacking midfield players, so this move might rekindle speculation that Palace are ready to listen to offers for Yannick Bolasie. Alan Pardew famously said that he wouldn’t listen to offers below £40 million, but if QPR are willing to accept around £8m for Phillips he might reconsider this position. Palace have also this week been linked with Hull striker Dame N’Doye and Newcastle keep Tim Krul.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to make a move on Everton right-back Seamus Coleman…

The route between Everton and Manchester United is a fairly well-trodden one in the transfer map. Current United stars Marouanne Fellaini and Wayne Rooney were both picked off for big fees. Leighton Baines was vigorously pursued during David Moyes reign and young starlets such as John Stones and Ross Barkley are understood to be window-shopped regularly. In return, United are happy to send players the other way when their use has expired – Tom Cleverley, Phil Neville, Tom Howard and Louis Saha among others. Everton right-back Seamas Coleman is the latest to attract United’s attention. They are in the market for a right-back with converted winger Antonio Valencia currently filling the role ahead of Rafael – who increasingly has the look of a Cleverley/ Neville/ Toward et al about him. A fee of £20 million should do it, with Adnan Januzaj in the opposite direction on loan possibly greasing the wheels.

Norwich have targeted Hull’s Republic of Ireland international Robbie Brady as their number one target after losing out on Luke Garbutt…

Norwich have reportedly made a £2 million offer for Robbie Brady, after primary target Luke Garbutt committed to a five-year deal with Everton (and will spend next season on loan at Bournemouth). The 23-year-old left-footer who can operate as a winger or at left-back came through the ranks and Manchester United but has spent the last four seasons at Hull, the first two on loan. The chance to stay in the PL will naturally appeal and current boss Steve Bruce has made it clear he expects players to leave and will not stand in their way. Saying, ‘We are going to lose players because PL clubs will want them. That is the big thing we have to deal with.’ So it just seems a question of price, with £2 million the Canaries’ opening gambit.

Sunderland have tabled a bid of £8 million for Dynamo Kiev striker Jeremain Lens…

Boss Dick Advocaat is desperate to boost his attack after a dire season in the PL. Only relegated Burnley scored fewer goals last season, with Sunderland failing to score in a staggering 17 of their 38 matches (45%). Jermain Defoe arrived in January with only partial success – his wonder goals v rivals Newcastle will be seen as a pivotal moment in their survival, but was one of only four from his 17 matches. Likewise, neither Darren Fletcher, Danny Graham nor Conor Wickham has ever looked capable of scoring regularly in the PL. Advocaat knows his country man Lens from their days at PSV Eindhoven – where he hit 34 goals in 96 appearances, before joining Dynamo Kiev where he has enjoyed league and cup success in the last two seasons. The Black Cats will need more than Lens to compete next season but the Dutch International will be a good start.
