Theo Walcott missed training yesterday, despite rumours that he would be fit for Arsenal's Champions League match against Dortmund, or possibly Manchester United this weekend.

The winger is sure to miss the mid-week match, and will be a doubt, at best, for the weekend's big match at Old Trattford.

Ilkay Gundogan refuses to put a timeline on when he will be ready for action but insists it can be measured in "weeks" rather than months.

The German international is edging nearer to a return after suffering a serious knee ligament injury [ACL] against Watford at the Etihad last year. However, he won’t be drawn on a specific date: "I want to feel ready when I am fully back. I want to feel safe and confident. I don't mind if it is two weeks or six." Gundogan suffered his third major setback in as many years in December 2016 and the 26-year-old admits it has been "mentally tough" overcoming the injury. A back problem, Spondylolisthesis, sidelined him for over 14 months in 2013 while a dislocated patella almost scuppered his move to City. Gundogan "can see the finishing line" but will face stiff competition for a place in the starting XI, once fully fit, following the arrival of Bernardo Silva from Monaco.

Newcastle made its fifth move of the summer with a season-long loan deal for Borussia Dortmund's Mikel Merino.

The Magpies finally added a central midfield after running through a series of targets without a deal, with Benfica's Andreas Samaris and Everton's James McCarthy being linked with a move to the club this summer. But at least for now, Benitez has moved for the 21-year-old Spaniard who can play in central and defensive midfield as well as in defense. Said Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez: "Mikel is a midfielder with talent. He's a good size, has quality on the ball and he's very, very focused and professional...He comes from a top side in Dortmund, and although he did not play too much last season he was signed [from Osasuna] as a young, talented player. To be signed by a club like that shows he has something good."

Watford could be without its club captain for the upcoming season opener against Liverpool in two weeks' time.

Troy Deeney had surgery to repair a minor groin issue at the beginning of the month and has not returned to training yet. Said manager Marco Silva:"We'll see - for the first match it is not easy. I believe, maybe unavailable for the first match of the season. Of course he started to work with us but had to stop for the surgery. He stopped training and when he is ready [and fit] he will come back and help us, like in the last few years." The forward made 40 appearances for Watford last season that included 10 league goals. But the Hornets may have to rely on Stefano Okaka as their lone center forward to start the season.

Santi Cazorla has vowed to return to first-team action "at my best level" and dismissed any suggestion that he could be forced to retire through injury.

The Arsenal playmaker has endured eight operations since suffering an Achilles injury 9 months ago. Several setbacks and a bacterial infection is likely to mean Cazorla will not play again this year, but the 32-year-old insists, he will be back stronger than ever having recently started his rehabilitation programme. "Do not pay attention to that [rumours]," he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero. "I do not know how far I am [off returning] but I am convinced that I am going to play football again and at my best level. I started my recovery two weeks ago. I’m still far [from playing]. I do not have strength in my tendon or muscle mass. I need time [to regain it] but I am very happy my recovery in this 15 days."

Junior Stanislas looks set to miss the start of the new Premier League season due to ongoing groin and hip pain which has hampered the winger since March.

The 27-year-old went under the knife to remedy a hernia issue in May but further complications were evident following his return to pre-season: "He had an operation on his groin in the summer and although it may have fixed a particular problem he had, he has now developed more groin and hip pain," revealed Eddie Howe who confirmed Stanislas will be referred to see another specialist. "I don’t know on a timescale, it’s very difficult to say. I don’t think it will be long term but whether he makes the first game of the season, we will have to wait and see." The Cherries boss also confirmed Brad Smith [hamstring] and Adam Smith [thigh] were close to making a comeback but Hyndman still has a little way to go: "Emerson's is a difficult injury because you have to manage his loads. He has trained with us but isn’t ready to play yet."

Chelsea have sent goalkeeper Jamal Blackman out on loan to Championship side Sheffield United for the coming season.

Blackman, who extended his Chelsea contract until 2021 prior to the move, will spent the 2017/18 campaign at Sheffield United having been allowed to leave after the arrival of Willy Caballero. The 23-year-old shined as the first-choice stop-stopper on loan at Wycombe Wanderers last, where he made 52 total appearances and as named the club's Young Player of the Year. On the arrival of the 6ft 6in goalkeeper, Blades manager Chris Wilder said: "Jamal has been our number one target right the way through the summer. There was a situation with his new contract at Chelsea so we've had to be patient but we are delighted that he is with us now because there were a few clubs in for him."

West Ham forward Andy Carroll looks set to miss the start of the upcoming season because of a groin injury.

Speaking during West Ham's pre-season trip to Germany, manager Slaven Bilic revealed the 28-year-old forward won't be ready for the start of the Premier League campaign. "Andy is still not able to train with the team but he is working hard at Rush Green with the physios," the manager said. "I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us." Carroll's prolonged absence means he Chicharito will likely be handed his debut when the Hammers open the term against Manchester United on 13 Aug.

Slaven Bilic has confirmed Michail Antonio will miss West Ham's first match of the Premier League season against Manchester United.

The 27-year-old's 2016/17 campaign came to an early end in April when he suffered a significant hamstring, and subsequently underwent surgery. While the winger has been rehabbing with a view to be fit for the season opener, he wasn't included in the squad for pre-season trips to Austria and Germany, and won't be fit for the season opener on August 13th. Though Bilic did not reveal an exact timeline for Antonio's return, he said the England international is ahead of schedule in his recovery. As for the trip to Old Trafford, Robert Snodgrass and Sofiane Feghouli will be in contention to fill in on the right flank.

After a summer of rumors of a high profile departure from Arsenal, Alexis Sanchez will arrive in London to begin training with the club in advance of the upcoming season.

After featuring for Chile in the Confederations Cup, Arsene Wenger held with his tradition and gave Alexis some extra time off to ensure that he is rested for the season. Sanchez's absence from the Arsenal camp has done nothing to curb the flow of rumors connecting him with big money moves to Manchester City, PSG, and other high profile destinations. Where Sanchez ends up remains to be seen but Arsenal have continued to tow the party line that he will remain at the Emirates at least through the end of his current contract which runs through the end of the upcoming season.

Xherdan Shaqiri scored the Potters' only goal and was a consistent bright spot for Mark Hughes side as they fell 2-1 to Sheffield United on a 90th minute winner.

Shaqiri's issues with minor injuries and inconsistency are well-documented. No one disputes that, on his day, he is a rare talent of the sort that mid-table clubs rarely attract let alone retain. As the season nears, Shaqiri put on a great performance at Brammell Lane but supporters and fantasy managers should be wary because we've seen brilliant flashes before from the Swiss international only to be disappointed at his inability to sustain excellence. He may be worth picking up late in a draft as a reserve/lottery ticket but he isn't someone you should depend on for production despite his name and outrageous bursts of talent.
