Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany insists he is "not worried" about the injury scare which forced him off against Portugal last weekend.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old could miss out in Russia, but Roberto Martinez insisted on naming Kompany in Belgium’s 23-man squad: "His strength is that he has a real winning mentality. We want to give him every opportunity to be there. It is a World Cup, not a friendly international, so we take this exceptional decision." And it looks like Kompany is ready to repay his manager’s faith after revealing on Friday that he was almost ready for the tournament: "I’m not worried. I’m pretty confident. I’m feeling good. It’s still my goal to play at the World Cup and I will try everything to make it. My suitcases are packed." Laurent Ciman will remain with the squad, on the standby list, after playing 90 minutes in a comfortable 3-0 win over Egypt on Wednesday.

Jonny Evans will make a surprise return to the Leicester City squad after making a rapid recovery from injury.

Claude Puel ruled the defender out for up-to 45 days with a broken toe in the build-up to game week twenty-two, but during Thursdays’ press conference, the Foxes boss confirmed Evans is back in contention for the trip to Molineux. "It was not an important or serious injury and he will be in the squad for Saturday. When a player can come back in the squad, I am happy." Aside from Daniel Amartey, who is still recovering from ankle surgery, Puel has no other injury concerns.

Will Hughes looks set to miss out this weekend after sustaining a concussion during the opening exchanges of the game at Selhurst Park.

The Watford midfielder suffered a knock to the head in the opening moments, and after initially being cleared, he still looked a little dazed and was replaced by Ken Sema on 19 minutes much to his disappointment. Hughes’ reaction suggested the problem was more of a precautionary measure, but Javi Gracia confirmed on Thursday that the 23-year-old is yet to rejoin the group and his involvement against Burnley is in serious doubt. "We'll see what happens because after the last game, he is not training," he said. "We need to wait and see his evolution, but it's difficult in this moment. He is not training in this moment, but maybe we will see with a good evolution in the next days. But playing in two days’ time, I am not optimistic." Tom Cleverley is pushing for his first league start in almost a year after scoring the winner from the bench in GW22.

Newcastle's medical staff faces a tall task in getting several key starters ready to face Cardiff City this weekend.

Winger Kenedy, defender Paul Dummett and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey all missed the club's FA Cup win over Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday due to injuries, but the biggest concerns come from defenders Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark. The starting center-backs each came away with injuries and will be assessed ahead of the weekend match with a relegation rival. Said manager Rafa Benitez: "We have to wait and see how they are. Ciaran Clark has a knock in his knee. Jamaal, it seems, was feeling his hamstring. We will see. It seems that it was not very serious, but he couldn't carry on. In a couple of days we will have a better idea. At the moment, it's too early. (Isaac) Hayden was fine, he had a kick in his back. Shelvey and (Paul) Dummett, we have to wait."

Crystal Palace lost more than just three points after blowing a lead against Watford at home over the weekend.

After starting goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was subbed off before half-time due to a calf injury, Wayne Hennessey also sustained an injury to his thigh but was able to finish the match. However, both goalkeepers could miss some time, meaning that 39-year-old Julian Speroni could be in line for a surprise start against Liverpool this weekend, according to Rotoworld injury expert Ben Dinnery: "Hodgson looks set to hand Speroni a recall. Guaita, suffered a calf strain on Saturday while his replacement, Hennessey, finished the game with a thigh related problem. Both goalkeepers require a scan, but there are fears that they could miss the remainder of the month."

Derby County came from two second half goals down to defeat Southampton on penalties after extra time in their FA Cup Third Round replay.

In a game packed with talking points, Derby thought they had taken the lead in the first half through Craig Bryson but his goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up after a lengthy VAR consultation. In the second half the Saints found fresh impetus after the introduction of Nathan Redmond off the bench and they scored twice in two minutes. Stuart Armstrong headed home the first before Redmond chipped Kelle Roos to double the PL side's lead. Harry Wilson added to his growing reputation by firing home a free-kick to pull the Rams back into the game and Waghorn completed the comeback for the visitors to force extra-time. Neither side could break the deadlock in the extra 30 minutes and the Saints could not match Derby's perfect record in five attempts from 12 yards. Nathan Redmond was the only Saint to miss a spot-kick for the hosts.

Newcastle managed to win their first away game in the FA Cup for 13 years at Blackburn on Tuesday but the victory came at a cost.

Speaking after the extra time win at Ewood Park, Rafa Benitez bemoaned his sides luck following two more injuries which heaped yet more strain on an already threadbare squad. Ciaran Clark was paired alongside Federico Fernandez in a much-changed line-up chosen with one eye on this weekends’ crucial home fixture against Cardiff City. But, the defender could only manage 45 minutes before succumbing to injury. "I don’t think it is very serious," mused the United boss. "It was a kick to his knee, an inflammation, but we will see in a couple of days." However, it was the departure of his replacement – Jamaal Lascelles – before the hour mark which is the cause of greater concern. "We have to wait, it is too early. It is a hamstring and you never know." With such a quick turnaround between games, you have to feel that the skipper is a major doubt for Saturday.

Fulham officially announced their first signing of the winter transfer window in Besiktas winger Ryan Babel.

The 32-year-old arrives in a permanent deal through the end of the season as the Cottagers looked to avoid relegation (they are currently in 19th place). The signing adds more depth to an attack that has only scored 20 goals this season with production from Aleksandar Mitrovic drying up over the last few months. Said the Dutch international: "My first impressions are good and I'm very excited. I definitely have faith that Fulham can stay up. That's one of the reasons that I'm here, to try and help that to happen. I'm ready to go, I'm excited and I can't wait."

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson confirmed an injury to goalkeeper Vicente Guaita over the weekend.

The Spanish keeper left the club's loss to Watford just before halftime with a calf injury after a routine play and will likely miss the next couple of games after recording three clean sheets in his last five appearances. That means that goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey looks set to take over again after losing the starting job earlier this season. Said Hodgson: "We don’t know yet [how bad it is] but it’s an injury to his calf which will have to be assessed. He couldn’t continue. How bad? We probably won’t know until he’s had a scan, but it was a definite muscle injury, it wasn’t cramp or a kick."

Liverpool’s defensive problems took a turn for the worse on Tuesday following the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to miss the remainder of January due to injury.

There were concerns for the 20-year-old at the Amex Stadium on Saturday when he suffered an ankle problem while warming up which almost ruled him out of the game. "It was pretty painful," revealed Jurgen Klopp post-match. "He made the sprints but I didn’t like the way he made them because when he slowed down, I thought it looked a bit like limping." However, following treatment by the club doctor, Alexander-Arnold was cleared to line-up against Brighton. "After a few minutes [it] got better and I told the medical staff I just needed some strapping and some painkillers and I'd be good to go. When you get into the zone it helps." But, despite completing 90 minutes without any obvious complications, tests since have confirmed that Alexander-Arnold also "tweaked" knee ligaments which could rule him out for up to a month.

Tottenham confirm Harry Kane will be sidelined until March after damaging ligaments in his left ankle during Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United.

The England captain was caught by international teammate Phil Jones deep into time added on, an innocuous challenge which was missed by referee Mike Dean. Kane received treatment long after the final whistle before making his way from the Wembley pitch in obvious discomfort. Reports on Monday suggested that a definitive timeframe would be difficult to ascertain due to swelling within the joint which can affect the validity of the scan and will compromise image quality making it difficult to give an exact diagnosis. However, on Tuesday, the club released an official statement ruling Kane out of the next 10 games which includes the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea and the first leg of the Champions League encounter with Borussia Dortmund. "The striker will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March."

Petr Cech has announced that he will be retiring from professional football at the end of the current season after 20 seasons as a professional.

Cech, who has been relegated to second string goalkeeper behind Bernd Leno, has officially announced his retirement at the end of the season. He will retire as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Premier League history. For Arsenal, Cech's retirement likely means needing to find another goalkeeper to compete with/back-up Leno in the summer as there are no likely candidates high up in the youth ranks. David Ospina is still on the books but is unlikely to return to the club as a reserve.
