Didier Deschamps said Olivier Giroud "should be ready" for France’s Group C opener on June 16 after he was forced off because of injury on Saturday evening.

The Chelsea forward was involved in a sickening clash of heads with club team-mate Matt Miazga which left Giroud requiring stitches to close a six-centimetre wound. Medics spent five minutes attending to the 31-year-old before he was replaced by Ousmane Dembele as a precaution. But, as France prepared for their flight to Russia, Deschamps was quick to play down concerns of a serious injury: "Olivier Giroud has a beautiful cut, but he will be able to face Australia," he said. The French manager also confirmed that Paul Pogba is "very likely" to be in the starting XI despite his insipid performances of late. The Manchester United midfielder was jeered throughout the 3-1 friendly win over Italy last week and failed to inspire his side in the lacklustre 1-1 draw against USA.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a goal and added an assist but that wasn't the entire story as he, and multiple teammates, missed sitters that would have changed the final result against Chelsea on Saturday.

Arsenal were often called profligate across a few editions of Arsene Wenger's sides through the years. The repetitive story was that they created chances at volume but didn't put away nearly enough of them. They turned back the clock to produce a vintage profligate performance against Chelsea with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (twice), Mkhitaryan, and Alex Iwobi all missing the frame on chances that should have been converted. Arsenal's defense continues to be a work in progress that allowed too many opportunities the other way and struggled to play the ball out of the back the way Unai Emery prefers.

Aleksandar Mitrovic opened his account with a second half strike that put Fulham level with Tottenham, but the Cottagers would quickly concede twice and came away empty in a 3-1 loss.

Two hyphen-named players were given their first starts today, loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah along with Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. Their presence was not enough to overcome a superior Tottenham side. Fosu-Mensah escaped a foul that would have given Spurs a penalty chance early. The attack could not get much going at all in the first half, save for the brief touches by Ryan Sessegnon. It would be Sessegnon to ignite a second-half equalizer, when he found Mitrovic for the strike. The defense would cough up two quick goals shortly after though, as Fulham will have to wait another week to collect their first point(s).

Jamie Vardy was dismissed on 66 minutes, but Leicester City held on with ten men to record a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton.

Claude Puel made four changes to his side from the opening-day defeat at Old Trafford. Debutante Jonny Evans partnered Harry Maguire in central defence, Nampalys Mendy and Marc Albrighton started in midfield, while Iheanacho made way for Vardy up front. Wolves rung the woodwork twice early, but it was the Foxes who struck first when a cross from Albrighton was inadvertently headed into his own by Matt Doherty on 29 minutes. James Maddison put the home side two goals ahead on the stroke off half-time with a curled, but deflected, strike from the edge of the area. The match took a sour note for Puel side's on 65 minutes when Vardy was sent off for a reckless challenge on Doherty, but Wolves could not capitalise on their man advantage. With Vardy facing a three-match ban, Iheanacho will get another chance to solidify his place in the starting XI.

The goal did not make a difference in the result for Tottenham, but Harry Kane and his teammates were euphoric as the talisman finally broke his August duck as Spurs rolled over Fulham, 3-1.

In what was the quasi-home opener for Spurs, Kieran Trippier was given a starting berth and would eventually go on to score the match-winner. Spurs dominated possession in the first half, but became a bit frustrated that chances weren't getting finished. They broke through just before the half, as Lucas Moura scored his first PL goal, curling one into the corner from inside the area. Fulham would level shortly after the break but Spurs scored twice in quick succession to put the game away. First, it was Trippier opening his account via a Dele Alli assist, then Kane got the monkey off of his back with a ball supplied by Erik Lamela. A tougher test in Manchester United is on tap next.

Marco Silva secured his first Premier League win as Everton's new manager in a 2-1 victory over Southampton.

The action started in the 15th minute with a slick free-kick routine as Leighton Baines quickly restarted play and found Morgan Schneiderlin down the wing, catching Southampton off guard. The Frenchman send a low cross into the box where Walcott looped the ball over Alex McCarthy for the lead. Despite an injury to Schneiderlin minutes later due to a bad tackle from Mario Lemina, the Toffees piled on the early pressure as Richarlison continued his scoring streak. The Brazilian, just minutes after going down with what looked like a hamstring injury, rose for an impressive header to see him go top of the league on three goals. In other team news, Mason Holgate got the start for a suspended Phil Jagielka.

Southampton fans will be pleased to see Danny Ings on the scoresheet but only as consolation in a 2-1 loss to Everton.

The on-loan Liverpool forward, who came into the starting lineup for Stuart Armstrong, joined Southampton on deadline day and coupled his first start with his first goal for the club, only his fourth in the last four seasons following a series of serious injuries. Down 2-0 in the 54th after a couple of first-half goals from Everton, Ings latched onto a flicked header from Mario Lemina following a corner to cut the lead in half, although that was all for Saints, who recorded four yellow cards on the afternoon.

Neil Etheridge continued his charmed start to life in the Premier League, saving a penalty for a second week in a row.

The best word to describe the first half is that it "occurred". The football was pretty dreadful though Harry Arter and Jonjo Shelvey stood apart as composed ballplayers in the centre of the field. Cardiff were the better side - just. Newcastle's Robert Kenedy (yes, that is his first name) may be in line to receive a post-match ban for a petulant lash-out at Victor Camarasa. Incidentally, the Brazilian didn't complete a pass in the first-half. It took him 13 minutes of the 2nd period to complete one. Isaac Hayden, on at half-time to replace injured 2nd choice right-back Javier Manquillo, was correctly red carded for a bad tackle on Murphy. When opportunity knocked in stoppage time, Kenedy's nightmare continued as his poor penalty was saved.

Huddersfield Town will be without Mathias 'Zanka' Jorgensen for Sunday's clash with Manchester City after the ever-present centre-back picked up a muscular injury in training.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner confirmed that the injury is "not very serious" and hopes Zanka will be able to return for GW3. But with the Dane unavailable for the trip to Manchester, Wagner must set up his defence without one of his mainstays. Jon Gorenc Stankovic could slot in alongside Christopher Schindler and Terence Kongolo if Wagner uses a five-at-the-back system. Alternatively, we could see the return of a traditional back four. Defensive midfielder Jonathan Hogg is also dealing with a hip problem and faces a late fitness test. Put simply; fantasy managers should avoid the Town defence this weekend.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas will miss Saturday's match against his former club Arsenal.

The Spanish midfielder has not featured since the Community Shield and remains unavailable for the weekend visit of Arsenal to Stamford Bridge. However, Maurizio Sarri hopes Fabregas will be able to return to training next week despite describing the problem as a minor, but strange, injury. "[It's] nothing serious, but he has a very unusual injury," said Sarri. "He has a pain, not in the knee, [but] near the knee." The Blues boss also noted that Real Madrid loanee Mateo Kovacic is unlikely to start but could feature off the bench. Ross Barkley got the nod against Huddersfield Town on Saturday and should continue starting until Fabregas and Kovacic are fully fit. Jorginho and N'Golo Kante will round out the midfield trio.

Adama Traore sat out the Week 1 draw with Everton but will be available to participate as Nuno Espirito Santo sees fit in Week 2 against Leicester City.

The recent arrival from Middlesbrough wasn't ready to take part in Wolves' return to the Premier League last weekend but will be ready to participate this time around. It will be fascinating to see who he displaces as Diogo Jota, Raul Jiminez, and Helder Costa are all strong options. Costa seems the most likely to give way since both players typically play on the right side of a three-man attack. Costa does have some versatility, though, and Espirito Santo could elect to move him to the left at the expense of Jota.

Leander Dendoncker is still not ready to make his Wolves debut after arriving on deadline day.

The Belgian center back/holding midfielder is not yet ready to take part for Wolves according to Nuno Espirito Santo in his press conference ahead of the club's Week 2 match at the King Power Stadium. Not much was provided by way of detail on his progress toward featuring with his new side so it isn't clear whether Dendoncker will participate as soon as Week 3 or whether we will have to wait a while to see him.
