Scotland were woeful in Haifa on Thursday evening losing 2-1 to a side placed 94th in the FIFA rankings alongside Qatar.

Israel have only beaten Albania and Liechtenstein in recent times but thoroughly deserved all three-points following an abject display by Alex McLeish’s men. Scotland went into the game without several key players and if it wasn’t for an inspired performance by Allan McGregor, the score line would’ve been a lot greater. Ryan Fraser was forced to withdraw after reporting for duty with a slight hamstring issue. "He failed a medical with the doctors and physios and we had no choice but to send him back," revealed McLeish. Scott McTominay was expected to overcome the knee problem he sustained in the win over Newcastle, but failed a late test and Tom Cairney remains side-lined after a setback in his recovery from an ankle ligament injury. "We believe he will soon be close to being back, clinically he is okay, but he still has many pains and is not available," confirmed Slavisa Jokanovic.

Bournemouth's Lewis Cook is determined to keep his starting place for Bournemouth having spent August and September watching on from the bench.

The 21 year-old midfielder played just 29 minutes in the opening two months of the season before returning to the first XI for the recent two victories over Crystal Palace and Watford. "I wasn’t frustrated, you just have to be patient. It’s such a hard league you have to take your chances," he told the Daily Echo. Cook's attitude to the period appears to have been good before and afterwards. He understands his teammates started the season well and Eddie Howe has praised his professionalism. Cook is starting on the bench for England's U-21 side on Tuesday in a European qualifier.

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong's appearance for Scotland against Portugal at the weekend was cut short as he limped off with an apparent calf injury.

Armstrong, a £7m summer signing from Celtic, has yet to make an impact at St. Mary's, having failed to start a game since August. His 77 minute run-out against the current European Champions was his longest appearance all season, though he showed a few good moments in spite of his lack of game time. Before going off, Armstrong played as a holding midfielder as the Scots absorbed pressure from their superior opponents who recorded a 3-1 win on the night.

Manchester United manager José Mourinho has been charged by the Football Association for alleged use of obscene language following his side's dramatic comeback win against Newcastle.

The Portuguese appeared to mouth foul language at the cameras as he departed the pitch in the wake of the 3-2 victory. According to an FA statement Mourinho has until 6 pm on Friday 19 October 2018 to respond to the charge. He may face a touchline ban if he accepts the charge, which could see him miss Saturday's clash at Stamford Bridge against his old club, Chelsea.

Norway and Bournemouth frontman Josh King suffered an ankle injury in the Scandinavian team's 1-0 win over Slovenia in the UEFA Nations League at the weekend.

In quotes published by Norway's Aftenposten and published in English by Bournemouth's local outlet the Daily Echo, King reported his ankle stiffening in the aftermath of the Slovenia game. He said a player fell over his leg but it felt alright at the time, leading him to playing on the injury. King has not been ruled out of Tuesday night's clash against Bulgaria, but should he miss that encounter he will be a doubt for the Southampton game on Saturday afternoon.

Gareth Southgate's England claimed a huge scalp on Monday evening in Seville when they inflicted defeat upon Spain on their home turf.

The final score on the night was 3-2 in a game of two halves, where England were at one point leading by three. Central to the victory was Marcus Rashford, who scored once past his club mate David de Gea in the Spanish nets and was a key component of the press England deployed. Rashford and Raheem Sterling targeted Spain full-backs Marcos Alonso and Wolves' Jonny, whilst Harry Kane played slightly deeper. In addition to his goal, Rashford also teed up Raheem Sterling for one of his brace, as all three goals the Three Lions scored took advantage of the Manchester-based players' pace. Rashford now has three goals in his last four starts for England, and will return to United training on Wednesday buoyed by a fantastic international break.

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is an injury doubt for Saturday's clash at Stamford Bridge against his old club, Chelsea.

Last week, Matic withdrew from Serbia's squad for the current international break, and he has been undergoing treatment at United's Carrington training base since the PL went off our screens. Jose Mourinho will be desperate to have the imposing figure of Matic in United's midfield for his first meeting with Sarri's Chelsea. He will have to concoct another plan to keep Eden Hazard quiet, something that will only be made easier by the presence of Matic.

Netherlands national team manager Ronald Koeman confirmed that Virgil van Dijk is fit despite leaving the team.

The former Everton coach said there was a previous agreement with Liverpool to allow Van Dijk to play against Germany before being sent back to the club to rest after playing through the pain of a niggling rib injury. It comes as welcomed news to Liverpool fans as Sadio Mane's status is up in the air after suffering a broken thumb while Mohamed Salah has also suffered an injury during the international break. Said Koeman: [Van Dijk] "He's back in Liverpool but he is ready to play for next week. He's taken a rest. He spoke to the manager. The medical staff of the Dutch national team spoke to the medical staff of Liverpool and made the decision that he was playing only the Germany game and then after back to Liverpool. He is ready to play next weekend."

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett gave the club a boost in defense by returning to training this week.

The oft-injured Magpies veteran has missed the last two Premier League games due to a hamstring injury but is expected to return to the 18-man squad ahead of this weekend's match against Brighton. Newcastle is still searching for their first win of the season as they sit second bottom on just two points through eight matches. But Dummett's return would provide a much-needed presence on the back-line after conceding five goals in the last two games, with Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark filling in for the Welshman. But a remarkably light schedule through Boxing Day provides a make-or-break opportunity for Rafa Benitez and company.

Victor Wanyama is expected to be available for Tottenham this weekend despite limping off for Kenya on Sunday.

The Spurs powerhouse has endured a poor start to the season – just three substitute appearances – after suffering a setback while on the clubs US tour. Wanyama aggravated a longstanding cartilage problem in his knee, the same one [left] which had hampered his involvement during the first half of 2017/18. The injury means Wanyama is not yet fully match fit, a likely contributing factor to his injury in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia. He was replaced because of a hamstring related problem in the 73rd minute having not played a full match since May. However, Wanyama’s withdrawal appears to be more of a precaution and the 27-year-old should be okay to face London-rivals West Ham United. Mauricio Pochettino is also hoping to have Christian Eriksen [abdominal] back amongst the ranks after missing the last four games while Mousa Dembele could overcome the thigh issue which kept him out of Belgium’s recent internationals.

Sadio Mane has become the latest injury doubt ahead of game week nine after suffering an injury while on international duty.

The Senegal star went for an X-ray on Monday and left hospital with his thumb in a splint [cast]. Although the specifics of the injury aren’t yet known, the problem is not believed to be serious and Mane should be okay for the trip to Huddersfield on Saturday - although he will be assessed on his return to Melwood. Fortunately, it looks like Mohamed Salah has been cleared following his withdrawal from the national team. Following the win over Swaziland, the Egyptian Football Association confirmed a "primary diagnosis" revealed that there was no apparent tear "but the player will need to undergo [further] scans" back at Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk will be "ready" to face the Terriers. "The medical staff of the Dutch national team spoke to the medical staff of Liverpool and made the decision that he was playing only the Germany game," said Ronald Koeman. "He is ready to play next weekend."

The Dutch Football Association confirm Virgil van Dijk will not be risked in a friendly against Belgium this week.

The Liverpool centre-back scored his country’s opener in a 3-0 win over rivals Germany in Amsterdam on Saturday, but despite completing 90 minutes, Van Dijk took another knock on his ribs and will return to Melwood as a precaution. There is nothing to suggest that the £75m defender will miss the trip to Huddersfield on Saturday, but given his ongoing issue, it seems needless to risk him after admitting he was managing the problem with painkillers and by "being strong and being a warrior." Injured on the eve of the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain last month, Van Dijk completed the match but lasted less than an hour against his old club five days later - he then missed the Carabao Cup defeat to Chelsea. "You never really play completely pain free. You are always going to have something - you are never going to be 100% totally fit throughout the season."
