Jermain Defoe admits his chances of making England's World Cup squad will diminish if he keeps being overlooked by Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Defoe has been given opportunities in the Europa League and he's been scoring goal, but the England striker has been unable to displace Roberto Soldado in the Premier League. However, Tottenham continue to struggle for goals with just nine in eleven games so far in the league, so Andre Villas-Boas could be tempted to give Defoe a chance, perhaps alongside Soldado. Emmanuel Adebayor is another option, although he is currently out of favour with the manager.

Southampton brushed aside Europa League opponents Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday but the comfortable 3-nil victory was marred by the news that Jordy Clasie could miss the start of the season because of injury.

New signing Clasie has been touted as the perfect replacement for the recently departed Morgan Schneiderlin but the $13 million summer signing lasted just over an hour before a hamstring strain curtailed his evening. Post-match Ronald Koeman revealed the midfielder had suffered a tear which would require a scan although the likely prognosis is at least 2-weeks ruling the Dutchman out of GW1.

Newcastle United made a much needed move for a defender in the transfer market by acquiring center back Chancel Mbemba from Anderlecht for a fee around £8m.

This deal was all but official for several days but McClaren recruits his second signing from the Belgian club that also parted ways with Aleksandar Mitrovic. It can only help the transition to their new surroundings to have an established relationship with each other. More importantly, Mbemba offers a bright future as a strong, quick center back and should take little time establishing himself as a regular starter for McClaren. As long as Fabricio Coloccini sticks around, the one to suffer most for playing time with this addition is Taylor, who was looking to re-establish himself after a long absence from an Achillies rupture. We may see a corresponding move that sees Taylor or Mike Williamson move on and have their wages off the books.

Jordan Ibe has dazzled enough so far this summer that Brendan Rodgers has now gone on record to state that the winger will feature heavily in the first team this coming season.

Bargain alert in the early weeks for fantasy managers as Ibe could pay real dividends for investors as their low-end midfielder. Priced at just 5.0 in the FPL game, he is worth a shot if only for the first four weeks. After that comes the international break and the closing of the transfer window when managers can assess his value going forward. Could he be the next Sterling for the Reds?

Christian Atsu is expected to feature versus Cardiff tomorrow after being withdrawn with a back-problem last time out.

Atsu was withdrawn with a back problem but it is now confirmed that it was done just as a precaution and the midfielder is ready to go. He will feature in tomorrow's match and is expected to be ready for week one. Atsu will be a interesting fantasy option as we start the season after having a slow season with Everton. He is a low-risk, high-upside pick in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has provided updates on a host of players with only 9-days to go before the Premier League opener against Watford at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are managing a number of problems but despite early optimism that at least three of those players – Darron Gibson, Mo Besic and Aiden McGeady – would be fit for GW1 none will recover in time. However the trio are "close to a return" and should be back in contention before the end of August. Martinez also confirmed that the club are waiting to find out the severity of the hamstring tear suffered by Steven Pienaar while Romelu Lukaku is being assessed after limping out of Tuesdays’ friendly win over Dundee because of discomfort in his thigh. Everton supporters are unlikely to see Tony Hibbert until at least September following the injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Asia Trophy.

Jordy Clasie has gone down with a hamstring injury and could miss the start of the season.

Clasie was injured in Southampton's Europa League match and may miss the start of the season. He's still to be assessed and will likely undergo a scan soon, but initial reports suggest it's just a hamstring strain. We'll consider him questionable for week one, with Harrison Reed likely to feature if Clasie can't make it.

Joey O'Brien picked up an injury during West Ham's Europa League match today.

O'Brien was replaced in the 35th minute by Reece Burke as he limped off the pitch. We don't know how serious the injury is but O'Brien is to be considered questionable heading into week one. If he can't go, Reece Burke will likely get the start and have good fantasy value after a solid showing last season that saw him pile up fantasy points in a short amount of time.

Sadio Mane looked great today in the Saints' Europa League victory.

Mane assisted on the opening goal with a great pass to Graziano Pelle and was then brought down for a penalty that turned into goal number two. The midfielder played almost the whole match and was a threat from start to finish. Mane was fantastic in fantasy last year and goes into his second Premier League season with huge expectations. Draft him with confidence and keep an eye out for his impressive skills.

Southampton defeated Vitesse Arnhem 3-0 in their Europa League Qualifier.

The Saints played very, very well and deservedly came away with a win. Graziano Pelle opened up the scoring with a fabulous strike after being set up perfectly by Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic made it 2-0 from the penalty spot right before halftime. Substitute Shane Long made it 3-0 in the second half and the Saints will surely be happy with their performance. We like their squad headed into next season and fancy them to be competing for a top seven spot once again.

James Collins was sent off in West Ham's 2-2 Europa League draw against Astra Giurgiu after receiving a harsh second yellow.

Collins started for the Hammers and helped them build a 2-0 lead but was sent off for a second yellow after an hour of play. Slaven Bilic described the second yellow as "harsh" and it certainly turned the match around. Fernando Boldrin made it 2-1 soon after and Angelo Ogbonna scored an own goal to equalize for Astra in the 82nd minute. The Hammers now have to go to Romania and earn a win in order to qualify for the next round. It's worth noting James Collins will not miss any Premier League action due to his red card in the Europa League.

Enner Valencia injured his knee in the West Ham's match against Astra Giurgiu today and will have a scan on Friday.

Hammers manager Slaven Bilic added that the injury "doesn't look good" and that may mean Valencia misses an extended amount of time. West Ham can't catch a break from injuries and they've now got two strikers who are bound to be on the bench to start the season between Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia. If Valencia misses extended time, Diafra Sakho and Dimitri Payet gain fantasy value as they're almost guaranteed to play consistently.
