Martin Jol has officially been sacked by Fulham Football Club.

Jol is an established manager and will likely find work for a top flight club somewhere soon. The issues with Fulham were rather clear, they need more youth and energy in their side. Jol had taken over an already veteran squad and watched them age more, signing players with name recognition but little left in the tank and in their 30's. Rene Meulensteen steps in and will have much to do to overhaul the roster over the next couple of transfer windows, if he is to keep the job long term, and fans will be biting their nails hoping the Cottagers can stave off relegation. Owner Sahid Khan has 5 wins between Fulham and his Jacksonville Jaguars......yikes.

Virgil Van Dijk played well and scored in Southampton's 2-1 win over FC Twente.

There were rumors sending Van Dijk to other Premier League clubs but he is currently still on Southampton's roster and playing well. He is guaranteed to start, and he will contribute random goals throughout the season like the one he scored today. The other Southampton goal came from Sam Gallagher, who will likely earn a bigger role as a backup for the Saints this season.

Swansea have inquired about Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa.

Ulloa played backup for Jamie Vardy but was very effective off the bench and as a replacement for Vardy when injuries struck late in the season. There are multiple teams inquiring about him, and Swansea need a striker after selling Alberto Paloschi and parting ways with Bafetimbi Gomis. This would be a great fit and Ulloa would be a good late-round pick if he ends up with Swansea.

Amid rumors of a transfer, Marko Arnautovic has tied himself to Stoke City for another four years after signing on renewed terms at the Britannia.

Stoke City continue to remake their image but Marko Arnautovic perhaps best represents the transition from the old (Pulis) Stoke to the new (Hughes) Stoke. Arnautovic blends physicality and a take-no-prisoners style with enough class to lead the Potters in goals from a wide attacking position. His loss would have been a significant blow as Mark Hughes continues to try to assemble the sort of squad that can regularly finish in the top half and entertain supporters at the same time.

Arsenal are hoping to bring in some defensive cover after Arsene Wenger confirmed Per Mertesacker will be side-lined for "a few months" due to injury.

The German defender was injured during last Fridays’ pre-season friendly with Lens and although initial reports suggested the knock was only minor, further tests have revealed the extent of the damage and Mertesacker immediately went under the knife. Wenger was reluctant to give a definitive timeline at this stage although he did admit that he was hoping to sign cover during the interim. "We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience," said the Gunners boss. "With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in." One player who has been linked, is Valencia’s centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, and with the Spanish club looking to balance their books, the German international could be an ideal replacement.

Ashley Barnes is set for an extended period on the sidelines after tests revealed his hamstring injury was more serious than originally thought.

Barnes limped off before half-time at Bradford on Saturday, but manager Sean Dyche was quick to allay growing concerns by suggesting the problem was only minor and his withdrawal was more of a precaution. However, it now looks like the striker is at risk of missing the start of the new Premier League campaign after a scan confirmed the extent of the damage. "Ashley is unfortunately going to be a bit longer than we hoped. We are not sure exactly how long yet but he’s tweaked a hamstring muscle," revealed the Clarets boss. "We are hoping it will settle down quickly. It’s nothing untoward but it could be a bit of time yet." There was better news regarding teammate Lukas Jutkiewicz, who was also forced off during the same game after complaining of muscular tightness, he trained on Tuesday and should come back into contention this weekend.

Fantasy owners will have to look elsewhere for an attack-oriented left-back after defender Aaron Cresswell suffered a knee injury.

West Ham confirmed the left-back will miss around the next four months after sustaining ligament damage in his knee following a harsh challenge in a preseason friendly over the weekend against a second-division German side. Without Cresswell, Slaven Bilic could turn to Michail Antonio at the position while rumors swirled of a potential summer move for cover at the position. Meanwhile, midfielder Manuel Lanzini will also miss the start of the season due to injury.

The Argentina Football Federation [AFA] have confirmed that West Ham playmaker Manuel Lanzini has been ruled out of this summer’s Olympic Games after suffering a knee injury during last week’s warm-up game against Colombia.

In a statement by the AFA they confirmed: "The West Ham man will remain in Miami from where he will leave for London." Lanzini was expected to miss to opening matches of the new Premier League season with the Olympic tournament due to run until August 20, but now the 23-year-old could make the trip to Stamford Bridge in game week one depending on the severity of his injury. Lanzini becomes the second West Ham player within a matter of days to be struck down, after Aaron Cresswell was ruled out for around four months, leaving Slaven Bilic without a naturally left-sided full-back until November.

Arsene Wenger is expected to provide an update on Per Mertesacker this evening amid concerns that the German defender has been ruled out for the remainder of 2016.

Mertesacker was part of the side which drew 1-1 with Lens last Friday in Arsenal’s first preseason game of the summer, but despite playing 90 minutes, the club announced yesterday that the 31-year-old would not be a part of the travelling squad to America after sustaining a knee injury. No specifics were given although rumours began to surface suggesting Mertesacker may miss up-to five months due to ligament damage. If confirmed, the Arsenal boss could be forced into the transfer market to provide defensive cover. Laurent Koscielny is expected to miss the opener against Liverpool due to his involvement at the Euros which would leave Calum Chambers to partner Gabriel Paulista [currently suffering from tonsillitis] in the heart of the Gunners defence.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Chelsea are obviously shopping this summer after the disappointment of last season and they've already added reinforcement with Michy Batshuayi and N'Golo Kante. They are now trying to reinforce defensively, and with John Terry getting old, they have eyes set on Koulibaly. Koulibaly will likely start and be a solid pick in late rounds of fantasy leagues if he ends up at Chelsea.

Idrissa Gueye could be headed to Everton after the club have triggered his release clause of £7.1m.

The clause has also been triggered by Marseille, so Gueye could be playing outside of the Premier League this season. Gueye was average with relegated Aston Villa last season and is unlikely to be a fantasy option regardless of where he ends up. You can safely avoid him in all formats.

Erik Lamela, looking to fend off a potential challenge to his spot in the line-up, scored Spurs' lone goal in their 2-1 loss to Juventus on Tuesday.

Spurs, traveling to Australia for their part in the International Champions Cup, lost their initial match to Italian Champions Juventus on Thursday. While they lost, their lone goal was promising with new arrival Victor Wanyama who won the ball as Juve attempted to clear their own end. He passed up to youngster Shayon Harrison who fed Lamela for a fine finish low to the far corner. A solid effort from a predominantly second team and youth squad for Spurs.
