Nemanja Vidic is available again for Manchester United, but may not walk right back into the side. David Moyes has "five centre-halves... and you are going to have to play well to stay in the team."

Phil Jones and Jonny Evans helped shut out Aston Villa, and the pair could be given the opportunity to forge a partnership in the next few matches. Of course rotation over the festive period is a given so the likes of David De Gea may be a better way to cover the United defence over their upcoming run of matches.

Saido Berahino's early goal was enough to secure a vital victory over Champions League hopefuls Southampton.

This was another big step towards Premier League survival for the Baggies as Saido Berahino's strike proved enough to beat Southampton. Berahino scored after just 71 seconds at The Hawthorns when he fired home from Maya Yoshida's clearance and the home side held on to take the three points. Graziano Pelle squandered Southampton's best chance when he failed to tap in Ryan Bertrand's excellent low cross. West Brom move up to 13th, eight points clear of the drop zone and it appears Tony Pulis has worked his magic once again. The Saints have now won just one of their last four league matches and remain in 5th, two points behind 4th placed Arsenal who have a game in hand.

Wayne Rooney scored once from the penalty spot and once from open play as he broke a personal eight match goalless streak and gave his team a 2-0 over Sunderland.

United weren't great but they did more than enough to sentence Sunderland to another Old Trafford loss. Falcao drew a penalty that was charged to Wes Brown but actually committed by John O'Shea. Brown was sent off and his former teammate converted the resulting penalty to put United up 1-0. Not too long after that Rooney popped up again on to head home the rebound of his own shot for a 2-0 lead. The win put United into third place in the league pending the results of Arsenal's match against Everton on Sunday.

In a case of mistaken identities, Wes Brown was sent off instead of teammate John O'Shea as Sunderland dropped a 2-0 decision at Old Trafford.

Sunderland played Manchester United even through the first half despite a massive possession deficit. United's domination of the ball was eventually too much as O'Shea fouled Falcao in the box. The foul got Wes Brown a red card and Wayne Rooney a penalty that he converted. Rooney scored again later in the second half to seal the Black Cats' fate. It was never likely that Sunderland were going to take points off of United at Old Trafford but they will be disappointed in the way they capitulated.

Papiss Cisse continues to score at a high rate when on the pitch, and today his goal stood alone as Newcastle grabbed their first win at home in 2015, 1-0 over Aston Villa.

John Carver got the result he needed but it wasn't exactly convincing. Facing the league's worst attack, one goal very likely would have been enough for Newcastle in their mind when the opening whistle blew, and it came true. In the 37th minute, Daryl Janmaat delivered a cross to Cisse who then shot from close range to beat Brad Guzan. Perhaps the return of Jonas Gutierrez to the squad gave them the necessary inspiration. He was seen warming up to a deserved ovation in the second half but did not feature.

Peter Crouch scored the only goal of the match a minute after entering 20 minutes from time as Stoke City beat Hull City 1-0.

Mark Hughes got his substitutions right as his only two subs of the match - Charlie Adam and Peter Crouch - combined for the only goal of the match. The first half didn't see much in the way of significant chances from either side. Charlie Adam came on a halftime for Stephen Ireland and improved things for the home side but it wasn't until the introduction of Peter Crouch that the scorekeeper was troubled.

None of Nikica Jelavic, Dame N'Doye or Abel Hernandez started Hull City's match at the Britannia and, predictably, they didn't score as they went down 1-0 to Mark Hughes' side.

Jelavic and N'Doye had both been in exceptional form over Hull City's past three Premier League matches. It isn't clear why N'Doye started the match on the bench or why Jelavic was omitted from the match day squad entirely. Regardless, in the absence of that much firepower, Hull City reverted to being the punchless group that was in the relegation zone as recently as mid-February. They did well to frustrate Stoke City for much of the match but couldn't hold them off entirely and went down to a second half Peter Crouch header.

Aston Villa added another goalless contest to their season, suffering a 1-0 loss at St. James' Park to Newcastle United.

It is the same old song for the Villans, as their slide in the table continues. With some solid defending earlier in the season, Villa were able to grab points by keeping out the opponent, but that hasn't occurred since New Year's Day. That has resulted in seven straight losses with a total of two goals in the process. Things are not getting any better under Tim Sherwood at the moment. Delph flashed the most promise, but all bets are off from investing here unless you still have Jores Okore stashed for very little in the Yahoo game.

Crystal Palace won their third straight match on the road in convincing style as Glenn Murray played a key role in the 1-3 victory over West Ham United.

For the very few out there that had Murray playing for their fantasy teams, take a bow. Alan Pardew is king of the road right now, ringing in five changes and looking right on every call, especially the inclusion of Murray. After the game looked to be heading to half without a goal, Murray took a shot that went on target and was redirected by Aaron Cresswell who blocked Adrian's view and the ball trickled in. Scott Dann would put the Eagles up two when he headed in a Jason Puncheon corner at the far post early in the second half. Murray then sealed the points with a more convincing goal, timing a diving header off a Puncheon free kick for his brace. Palace's attacking options are looking better with each passing week, though Puncheon probably is more dependable for an uninterrupted run in the side than Murray is.

West Ham United watched an even match turn one-sided as Crystal Palace would score three goals in the span of 22 minutes and the Hammers could only counter with a goal from Enner Valencia in a 1-3 loss.

West Ham are usually a tough nut to crack at Upton Park, especially from clubs in the lower half of the table, but Palace really had them disorganized for a large chunk of the match, scoring three times in a 22 minute stretch. The lone goal came too late from Valencia, who was fed by Stewart Downing just outside the box and he blasted one past Julian Speroni. The score saved fantasy days for these two and Aaron Cresswell was lucky to avoid an own goal, but otherwise a disappointing outcome for them here.

Glen Johnson is battling an illness that could see him miss the squad when Liverpool host Manchester City on Sunday.

Johnson has not been a part of the plans in recent months as he doesn't fit quite well in Brendan Rodgers' wingback formation. He did get a run out in the last league match to finish things up so perhaps Rodgers is looking for a way to freshen him up. For this weekend either way, he is hands off with his spot nowhere near guaranteed, a tough fixture against Man City, and now with an illness to clear.

With Andy Carroll and Carlton Cole both absent, Nene will likely be involved in West Ham's match with Crystal Palace at Upton Park on Saturday.

The former PSG man arrived as a free agent after the transfer window closed due to West Ham's injury crisis at the forward position. It is likely that Sam Alardyce will start Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia against the Eagles leaving Nene on the bench. If a substitute at forward is in the cards, Nene will almost certainly be the first man off the bench. If he does get in the match it will be instructive to see what sort of impact he can have before making any decisions to bring him into a fantasy team regardless of format.
