Manchester City have completed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernandinho for a fee of about £30m.

It is thought the box-to-box Brazilian midfielder has been purchased to form a partnership with Yaya Toure, which will mean more time on the bench for Gareth Barry and Javi Garcia. Fernandinho has a reputation for powerful shooting and pops up with his fair share of goals, scoring 53 times for Shakhtar, but his main role is breaking up attacks. He is strong, extremely quick and will be a fantastic signing for Manchester City, provided he settles in England.

Benik Afobe suffered a knee injury in training during AFC Bournemouth's current preseason tour in the United States and the striker will have a scan when the club returns home

According to Eddie Howe, Afobe "just took a knock to the knee" so it was not a major contact injury and the odds are it isn't too serious. While that means Afobe may not miss any time when the regular season begins, it eliminates his chances of impressing his manager in the preseason in the fight for regular playing time when league play gets underway. Callum Wilson has already bagged a brace on this current tour and looks to be the clear-cut first choice striker when the Cherries open up against Manchester United in three weeks' time.

John Stones and Phil Jagielka will miss Everton’s first pre-season friendly at Barnsley on Saturday through injury.

While Stones has been linked with a summer move away, the club have been keen to stress that a minor muscular problem has denied him a return to his former stomping ground, although he could be back on Tuesday to face MK Dons. Jagielka on the other hand, looks to have suffered a recurrence of the hamstring strain which hampered his progress during the latter stages of the 2015/16 campaign. However, Ronald Koeman will be able to call upon the services those involved in France at Euro 2016 -- Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy, Aiden McGeady and Ross Barkley – with the new boss promising the quartet at least 45 minutes of action.

Steve Cook could miss up-to two weeks after he pulled out of the recent friendly win over Minnesota as a precaution.

Cook felt discomfort in his thigh during the warm-up on Wednesday and Eddie Howe decided not to risk his defender in the hope of avoiding any long term damage. Initial tests reveal that the 25-year-old -- who started all but two of last season’s Premier League matches – will only be side-lined for a fortnight. Meanwhile, there was better news regarding striker Benik Afobe who was injured in training recently: "Benik had a scan and everything looks good with the knee so we’re hopeful it’s not too bad," revealed the Bournemouth boss. Baily Cargill [groin] and Nathan Ake [rested] will also miss the game against Portsmouth on Saturday, but Andrew Surman and Ryan Fraser could return after they were omitted from the squad last time out.

The FA has confirmed Sunderland coach Sam Allardyce as England's next manager following the resignation of Roy Hodgson.

Allardyce leaves Wearside after less than a year at the helm of Sunderland, who he led out of the relegation zone last season by two points over rival Newcastle. The manager signed a two-year contract to lead England through the next World Cup: "I will do everything I can to help England do well and give our nation the success our fans deserve. Above all, we have to make the people and the whole country proud. While my main focus will be on the senior team and getting positive results, I want to add my influence to the great work being done across the development teams at St. George’s Park – a facility I have used with my previous clubs"

Liverpool has officially unveiled Newcastle midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum as the club's latest signing in a £25 million move.

The Dutch international arrives at Anfield as the club's seventh signing of the summer after scoring 11 goals while playing in every Premier League game last season. Wijnaldum leaves Tyneside after arriving last summer in a £14.5 million move from PSV Eindhoven. Said manager Jurgen Klopp: "[He seems] a great man - from the outside - because I don’t know how he works yet and I have to work with him. [But] I always love to watch him, his passion as a trainer, I like how he enjoys the game. He gives something back to the group [with his passion] so I look forward to working with him."

Arsenal traveled to the north of France for their pre-season opener and drew 1-1 with Lens on Friday.

It was a line-up comprised of more reserves and fringe first-teamers than it was a full strength squad. Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal were the only two likely first choice starters that featured with Martinez, Chambers, Debuchy, Elneny, Coquelin, Walcott, Iwobi, Akpom, and Reine-Adelaide joining them. With much of the squad still recovering from summer tournaments it was a lackluster performance but it did come with a real highlight of an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain goal from a tight angle.

Arsenal have signed Bolton Wanderers and England U21 center back Rob Holding to a long term contract.

With current incumbent center backs Koscielny and Mertesacker closer to the ends of their careers than the beginning and reserves Gabriel and Calum Chambers having failed to distinguish themselves thus far, Arsenal have purchased another potential replacement in Rob Holding. Holding is described as a "ball-playing center back" which presumably puts him more in the Koscielny category than the Mertesacker category. He partnered Chambers in the U21s and was impressive among his peers in the Championship for Bolton despite the club being relegated after last season. Holding is certainly more "one for the future" than a threat to play this season but worth keeping an eye on as Arsenal's central defensive starts to transition over the next season or two.

Watford have announced the signing of right back Brice Dja Djedje from Marseille on a permanent deal.

The Ivorian arrives at Vicarage Road at the behest of new manager Walter Mazzarri who reportedly was interested in bringing the player to Napoli when he was managing that club. Dja Djedje is an interesting fantasy option presuming he is listed as a defender. Mazzarri will reportedly line up in a 3-5-2 with Dja Djedje presumably playing a more attacking role that could see his offensive production jump even if he doesn't have a great history in that regard. Definitely one to watch out for in deeper leagues.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a goal against his former club but United were demolished 4-1 in their ICC Champions League opener.

Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford among much fanfare as well as bringing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Eric Bailly to the club. With Paul Pogba presumably on his way as well optimism has been running rampant. United started a strong line-up featuring Bailly and Mkhitaryan as well as holdovers like Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay, Jesse Lingard, and Marcus Rashford. That strong line-up was demolished by a Dortmund side that was a mix of likely starters and reserves. Not a great start for Mourinho but there will certainly be more to come once Zlatan, Martial, Rooney and (maybe) Pogba join up.

Despite having sold him while in charge at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho has indicated that Juan Mata has a place in his Manchester United squad.

Amid reports that Everton and other suitors in Spain are hot on the trail of Juan Mata, Jose Mourinho has indicated that the playmaker has a place at Old Trafford. Whether this is true or just a negotiating tactic isn't clear but Mourinho was quoted as saying "I think since the first day everything is clear between us. There is space for him. He's a talented player and I don't promise places to anyone. I promise respect and I like him, so if he wants to stay and I think he wants [that]. Until this moment I don't have one little sign that he wants to leave, so I think he wants to stay and, yes, there is space for him and, yes, I think he can be useful to the club." More to come for sure.

Salomon Rondon and Callum McManaman scored the goals as West Brom beat out Vitesse Arnham 2-1 in pre-season action on Thursday.

The Baggies lined up substantially the same as they did for much of last season with Ben Foster, four center backs (Dawson, McAuley, Evans, Olsson) and a couple of holding players (Fletcher and Yacob) backing a sparse attacking group. James Morrison is back from a protracted hamstring injury and 17-year-old Jonathan Leko got a start as did newcomer Matt Phillips. Rondon and substitute McManaman scored the goals and it was enough for a pre-season win. Saido Berahino was on as a substitute in the 48th minute but doesn't seem long for the West Brom squad.
