Frank Lampard could return a week earlier than anticipated to face Manchester United in an important Premier League match.

It's unknown if Lampard will be able to make it or if he would start, but it looks like he is very close to a return. I wouldn't trust Lampard in fantasy this week because of the uncertainty, but he can be a good option once he returns with his regular role.

Jak Alnwick got through 89 minutes and change with a clean sheet still intact in the always volatile Tyne-Wear derby, but Sunderland's Costel Pantilimon was in fine form until the final whistle as Sunderland sneaked a 0-1 win at Newcastle.

Alnwick was one of two minimum priced keepers in the Yahoo game that managers were rolling with as their backup in a week where if you own the popular Thibault Courtois as well, the chance of Alnwick's score coming into play was a clear and present danger. What a difference a 90th minute can make though as his score would have been lifted by a clean sheet and is instead squashed by the loss. To say it won't get any easier next for the young Alnwick who is learning on-the-go -- a trip to Old Trafford. You may not want him for a backup there even if your regular keeper is fit as a fiddle.

Sunderland won their fourth straight Tyne-Wear derby thanks to a goal in the 90th minute by Adam Johnson as the Black Cats spoil Newcastle's day at St. James', 0-1.

The match began as this fixture often does, with a yellow card issued within two minutes. Unlike most Tyne-Wear battles however, the game would end with eleven men per side, as the red card stayed in the ref's pocket. It also was shaping up as an aberration in that the game was goalless heading into the final minute before stoppage time. That was when substitute Will Buckley was able to pick out Johnson, who scored from six yards. The win is just the third of the season for the Black Cats, but they are getting by with drawing 10 and losing only 4.

In a match without the availability of a pure striker, Manchester City were able to find their scoring shoes in the second half, as a David Silva brace would grab the headlines in their tidy 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Going into the locker room at the half 0-0, the storyline looked to be how ineffective City were without a true striker as the versatile James Milner filled the role in a false nine. They plenty of possession and eight shots, but none were on target at the break. The dominance of possession would eventually undo the Palace defense though, as Silva opened the scoring early into the 2nd half, scoring off a deflection after being fed by Pablo Zabaleta. It was Silva again, this time firing home from a Aleksandar Kolarov cross. Yaya Toure would wrap up the 2nd half onslaught with a signature powerful surge that gave him his fourth goal in his last six league matches. Its off to West Brom on Boxing Day for the Sky Blues, who are at least temporarily level on points at the top of the table now with Chelsea.

Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor was beaten by a Jonjo Shelvey long range strike that took a deflection off Ki Sung-Yueng 15 minutes into the game.

Both teams squandered chances later on in the match, with Hull hitting the crossbar once and Swans hitting the woodwork twice. Ki Sung-Yueng has three goals on the season and two goals in his last four games. Swansea is up to eighth in the league and Hull - winless in 10 games - is second from the bottom.

Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll lift West Ham to its fourth win in five matches, beating Leicester 2-0 on Saturday.

Carroll scored midway through the first half and Downing added to the lead shortly after the second half began with an unstoppable effort placed into the far corner. Downing has a goal or an assist in the last four games and Carroll has three goals in his last three. West Ham sits in fourth place, one point behind Manchester United, while Leicester remains bottom of the table with 10 points.

Stephane Sessegnon had his second consecutive strong weekend as he provided assists on both of West Brom's goals in their 3-2 loss at Loftus Road.

Sessegnon re-emerged from an extended period of injury and ineffectiveness last weekend as West Brom managed a rare victory. He tried his best against Queens Park Rangers as he headed on a corner that Joleon Lescott headed home to give Albion an early 1-0 lead. The Baggies' second goal came through Valera who performed a beautiful give and go with Sessegnon at the edge of the box before scoring. Unfortunately, Alan Irvine's men couldn't hold on to the lead as Charlie Austin hit for a hat trick that saw QPR draw even with West Brom in the table.

Erik Lamela finally opened his Premier League account, scoring his first in style, as Tottenham were able to hang on with a 2-1 win over Burnley.

While normally a struggle for Spurs to make a statement early in matches, they were able to do so today as Harry Kane opened the scoring twenty minutes in, heading home a cross from Nacer Chadli, giving him his first home goal in league play this season. It was Lamela that opened everyone's eyes in the 38th minute though, when he cut left from his right flank position and sent a dazzling curling effort over the box and into the top left corner of the Claret goal. Lamela is still a work in progress but the talent is there waiting to be harnessed and we saw a fine glimpse of it today. Expect his pitch time to increase.

Radamel Falcao scored a header from a hard-driven Ashley Young cross to draw United even in their 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Once again, Manchester United weren't great over the course of 90 minutes. This time it caught up with them as the only managed a single point at Villa Park despite playing a man up for a significant portion of the second half. The good news was that Falcao started and completed 90 minutes and Angel Di Maria came in as a second half substitute. The bad news was that despite Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Falcao, Di Maria and Mata all playing at least some of the match they could only manage a single goal.

Ashley Barnes delivered a wonder-strike that brought Burnley level with Tottenham in a fast-paced first half, but Spurs would go on to score once more and take all the points in a 2-1 final.

It was Barnes' goal last month that gave Burnley their first victory of the season and today it looked as if there was more magic in store as the Clarets were looking to get their first win on a London ground in league history. After Spurs went up first, Burnley didn't take long to level the score. George Boyd pounced on a miscue by Spurs and was able to dribble toward the box and fed the ball into Barnes who took a quick touch a drilled a torpedo into the top corner. The second half offered little in attack for either side and though Burnley had a bit of a flurry late in added time, they came up short finding the equalizer. The Clarets host Liverpool next.

Christian Benteke scored a goal and was generally strong as Aston Villa picked up a point against visiting Manchester United.

The story of the match was Aston Villa's quality defending in the face of wave after wave of world class attackers and then down a man. Christian Benteke provided the attacking impetus with a beautiful curling goal and a few other strong attempts. Aston Villa were shorthanded due to injury and suspension and will be very happy to have picked up a point against a team that have been churning out wins despite these sorts of mediocre performances.

Ronald Koeman shook his formation up in an effort to snap a four game losing streak in league play and the plan paid off as Maya Yoshida scored a goal and helped keep a clean sheet in an impressive 3-0 drubbing of Everton.

With a rash of injuries in central midfield, Koeman was almost forced into playing Yoshida with Toby Alderweireld and Jose Fonte at centerback and allowing Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne to play higher up as wingbacks because there are so many central midfielders either injured or suspended. The Saints were fortunate to have a Romelu Lukaku own goal give them all they needed to win in the first half, but they put the game to bed in the 2nd as Graziano Pelle notched his eighth goal of the season and with time running out, Yoshida scored with more of a shoulder than an outright header, but he will take it. A huge haul for him for the two people in the world that may have played him. Considering the positive result, we may see more 5-3-2 from Southampton, further increasing the attraction of Bertrand and Clyne.
