Jay Rodriguez and Dejan Lovern both scored pretty goals to put Southampton up 2-0 but they couldn't hold the lead and had to settle for a draw at the Stadium of Light.

Everything appeared to be going to plan for the Saints in Saturday's early kick off. They were dominating play and scored two fine goals - volleys from both Rodriguez from open play and Lovern from a corner. They way the match went early, it appeared it could have ended 4-0 or even more to the away team but Sunderland responded quickly against the run of play and eventually scored a spectacular equalizer from Adam Johnson for the final 2-2 scoreline.

Frank Lampard has addressed the New York City media in advance of his anticipated MLS debut on Sunday against Kaka and Orlando City SC.

After a fair amount of drama surrounding his arrival in Major League Soccer and the propriety of the relationship between Manchester City and New York City FC, Frank Lampard is set to show us whether it was worth the drama or not. A bit part player for Manchester City during the Premier League season, he should be well rested and ready to get a taste of American heat and humidity. He will square off against another newly arrived world superstar in Orlando City's Kaka and will soon be joined at NYCFC by newly announced signing Andrea Pirlo who is coming off a Champions League final appearance with Juventus.

German website Sport1 are claiming Manchester United target Thomas Muller has had a training ground bust-up with Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola.

They allege that Muller was heard shouting "So I can leave now, can I?" although the Daily Mail offer a slightly different take on what was actually said "Fine! So I may as well just stop now and go back inside!" United are rumoured to be considering a $95 million bid for the 25 year-old who would become the first German to ply his trade at Old Trafford. Louis van Gaal is expected to busy during the transfer market following the departure of Nani with Fenerbahce ready to submit a fresh bid for Robin van Persie plus clubs’ enquiring about the availability of James Wilson on-loan. Torino right-back Matteo Darmian is on the United radar along with PSG striker Edinson Cavani.

Man City target Raheem Sterling has been named the most valuable young player in Europe by the Soccerex 20 Football Value Index…

Despite topping the poll, ahead of the likes of PSG’s Marquinhos and Manchester United new boy Memphis De Pay, Sterling’s value has been set at just £35 million. I say ‘just’ because Man City have already had a £40m bid knocked back by Liverpool, who value him at £50m. And that is the one that counts, of course. Soccerex is essentially a networking organization that periodically produces studies like this, so their gravitas is limited. But it does to serve to demonstrate the gulf between PL transfer fees and the rest of the (real) world. According to these number Man United not only paid £7.2m over the odds for De Pay, but £15m over for ‘home grown’ Luke Shaw. And with Liverpool holding out for £50m for Sterling, it appears that a £15m hike is the going rate.

Sunderland have had a £5 million bid for West Ham winger Stewart Downing turned down, with Middlesbrough standing by to move in…

The battle for the services of Stewart Downing is hotting up, with former clubs Sunderland and Middlesbrough going toe-to-toe. Downing spent a short loan spell at Sunderland in 2003 and manager Dick Advocaat has made no secret of his desire to take him there permanently. A transfer fee of £5m and a three-year deal has been tabled for the player who turns 31 this month. But former club Middlesbrough are prepared to better that, offering a £6m fee and a four-year deal. It is thought that Downing planned a move to his boyhood club if they had been promoted, but whether he would drop into the Championship is unclear. West Ham are in no hurry to sell the winger after an excellent season, hitting six goals and eight assists in an almost ever-present campaign (37 matches).

Everton brace themselves for a £20 million Tottenham bid for midfielder James McCarthy…

Rumours have persisted about James McCarthy wanting a move from Goodison for long enough to assume there is some fire behind all the smoke. The classy midfielder hasn’t always produced a lot of end product – just three goals in 58 matches – since his £13m move from Wigan, but is known to be admired by Arsenal and Manchester United, among others. One of the ‘others’ is Tottenham who look ready to make good on their interest by offering a £20m deal which could include winger Aaron Lennon as a make-weight. Lennon made a big impression during a loan spell at Everton last season and would certainly sweeten the deal. Plus, Roberto Martinez is known to want to strengthen other areas – including central defence and attack – so could make use of the additional funds.

Liverpool prepare to take their spending past £80 million for the summer, which is good news for Man City as they launch a third bid to secure Raheem Sterling…

The Daily Express report that Liverpool are ready to meet Aston Villa’s £32.5 million release clause in Christian Benteke’s contract. The Belgian striker would be their sixth signing of the summer, taking their spending past £80 million. All of which is music to Manuel Pellegrini’s ears. City have already had offers of £25m and £40m for Raheem Sterling knocked back, but with an £80m hole in Liverpool’s budget it is widely thought that a third bid closer to £50m will finally land their man. Sterling reported back to pre-season training this morning and will no doubt want the matter dealt with quickly. Not least because he stands to pocket a £4m slice of his agents’ fee if a £50m deal is done, thanks to an unique contract arrangement.

Roberto Martinez is on pole position to sign Juventus center-back Angelo Ogbonna in a £7 million deal…

According to reports in Italy, Juventus are ready to listen to offers for center-back Angelo Ogbonna and Everton are ready to pounce. The 27-year-old made 25 appearances in Juve’s double-winning season and was on the bench for the Champions League final. But has struggled to nail down a regular first team spot. His availability has alerted West Ham and Southampton, but Roberto Martinez has been tracking the player all summer and thought to be favorite to land him for a fee in the region of £7m. Italian international Ogbonna will relish the chance to revive his career in the PL with the Euros coming at the end of the season and provide Everton with a quality alternative to John Stones and Phil Jagielka.

Norwich have been put off a move for Robbie Brady by Hull’s £7 million asking price…

The proposed transfer of Robbie Brady to Norwich has hit the buffers because Hull are demanding too much money for the winger. Norwich boss Alex Neil has identified the Republic of Ireland international as key to his plans on their return to the PL, but value Brady at £4.5 million. Hull want £7 million for the former Manchester United man who spent two years on loan at the club before making the move permanent in January 2013. He was a regular last season, playing 34 times and will add PL experience but if a compromise cannot be made Norwich will turn their attention elsewhere. QPR winger Matt Phillips was a player of interest, but he looks on the verge of a move to West Brom so Norwich could be left frustrated.

Tottenham have formally announced that Etienne Capoue has joined Watford on what is believed to be a £5million transfer.

Capoue, believed to be part of a package deal between Spurs and Watford that could also include Benjamin Stambouli, should see the field much more at Watford than he did at Spurs. After a high profile move to the North London club as part of the class of summer signings that came in to replace Gareth Bale, playing time failed to materialize. With Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb ascendant in holding midfield roles, Capoue's move was inevitable. As Watford's new record signing, he should be a guaranteed starter.

Chelsea are still confident of capturing the signature of Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic despite late interest from Manchester United.

Mourinho moved quickly to increase his offer to over $12 million after his initial bid was rejected a week ago and the Blues expect Begovic to pen a 4-year deal said to be worth around $110k per week. The move could also see either Victor Moses or Patrick Bamford move to the Britannia on-loan for the 2015/16 season. Meanwhile Chelsea face a struggle to keep full-back Felipe Luis at the club as the defender is unhappy with his lack of first team opportunities. The Brazilian has found himself playing second fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta but Atletico must stump up around $25 million as Chelsea are keen to recoup the money they invested last summer.

With rumors still flying about a move to Real Madrid, David De Gea is set to rejoin Manchester United for the start of pre-season training today.

The player's presence at the start of pre-season training is probably not indicative of anything other than that it is going to be a complex and drawn-out process to get De Gea from Old Trafford to the Bernabeu. There is no indication that there is any acrimony between any of the parties so consider this business as usual until the situation changes. There isn't any indication that De Gea has decided to reverse course and commit his future to United so it would be an eternal optimist that would take his reporting to training as anything other than waiting until the other shoe drops.
