Tim Sherwood continues to rebuild the Aston Villa squad he inherited last season by adding striker Rudy Gestede from Blackburn Rovers to the ranks and French midfielder Jordan Veretout from Nantes as the Villains’ swooped to make their fourth and fifth signings of the summer window.

Gestede arrives for a smidgeon under $10 million and will challenge Jordan Ayew, Libor Kozak and Gabby Agbonlahor for a starting berth in Villa’s new look attack. Having established himself within the second tier of English football as a strong frontman who enjoys an aerial duel and – most importantly – has the ability to score the 26 year-old bagged 32-goals from his last 50 league starts and he is a player Sherwood knows well. Gestede was joined on Friday by under-20 World Cup winner Jordan Veretout - a dead ball specialist - who finalised his deal from Ligue 1 side Nantes just hours later.

Diego Costa and Gary Cahill are ready for Chelsea's match against Arsenal this weekend.

Costa and Cahill suffered minor injuries in Chelsea's last match but both have recovered and will play in the Community Shield. The Community Shield is not as important as a Premier League match, at least according to Jose Mourinho, so it's a huge sign of confidence that the club feels both players are 100% fit. Continue drafting both in fantasy leagues as you normally have.

West Bromwich Albion have signed Rickie Lambert from Liverpool on a two-year deal.

Lambert went from great redemption story at Southampton two seasons ago to feel-good story of last summer when he went to boyhood club Liverpool to massive disappointment after a poor season after arriving at Anfield. He will have a chance to change the narrative at West Brom who are in desperate need of a target man to front Tony Pulis' battering ram style of play. Victor Anichebe could be that guy but he's frequently injured and Brown Ideye is hardly proven. Lambert could step in and be the starter if he proves he's fit and that last season was just a poor fit between player and playing style.

Stevan Jovetic has left the Premier League and Manchester City for Serie A and Inter Milan according to a Tweet from Inter.

Jovetic arrived at the Etihad with much fanfare but poor health robbed him of a chance to really establish himself in the side. With Wilfried Bony arriving last January and Raheem Sterling coming this summer, the writing was on the wall for Jovetic. He will now move on and see if he can recreate the great Serie A form that saw City buy him in the first place. There is some question over the nature of the deal with Inter having announced a four-year permanent deal and Manchester City indicating a year-and-a-half loan with an option to buy permanently. The terms don't matter too much on the pitch but City have put together a string of disappointing transfers and to not get a transfer fee back for Jovetic for another 18 months minimum would be another brutal indictment of their transfer dealings.

Theo Walcott ended speculation about his future after signing a four-year contract extension with Arsenal.

With only the upcoming season remaining on his current deal, there was some urgency on both sides to figure out the future. If Walcott hadn't signed then Arsenal might have considered a late August or January sale. With Walcott signed for the next four years, Arsenal will be very picky in the transfer market with Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and even Aaron Ramsey all signed long term and able to play in the three primary attacking roles around Mesut Ozil.

Santi Cazorla, who had only one year remaining on his current contract, has signed a new deal with the club committing his future.

Santi Cazorla was the subject of at least some transfer rumors over the summer because his Arsenal deal was set to expire at the end of this season. While the length of the new deal wasn't revealed in any of the initial press releases this new deal presumably ties Cazorla to the club for at least this season and the next. With Cazorla turning 31 in December it is reasonable that this season or next season would be his last as a consistent starter for the Gunners. Whether he stays on in more of an Arteta/Rosicky-type role after that or elects to step down a level to keep playing consistently remains to be seen.

As the player remains AWOL from Manchester United's pre-season tour, a permanent move to PSG appears to be nearing completion.

No, a deal hasn't been announced officially by either club but it's close enough that we're going to call it done. Angel di Maria's short and disappointing tenure in the Premier League with Manchester United is over. His departure opens a place that reportedly will be filled by Pedro. The interesting question raised by the arrival of Pedro is where Memphis Depay fits into the United attack. With Pedro, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata around it may be that Depay starts the season as more of a super-sub than a guaranteed starter. It isn't an unreasonable strategy for helping him adapt to a better league in the real world but it would certainly upset fantasy managers who are drafting Depay 20th overall in draft-style leagues.

Out of favor Man City striker has confirmed his transfer to Roma, agreeing terms with the Serie A club according to Sky Sports. Now it is just a matter of settling on a fee…

It is a transfer that has been rumbling for a number of weeks. Bosnian front man Edin Dzeko was always going to be too good to sit on Man City’s bench, but perhaps never quite good enough to force his way into the team. Especially if Manual Pellegrini is going to tweak the shape this season, opting for a 4-2-3-1 formation to get the best out of new signing Raheem Sterling and City’s best creative force David Silva. Dzeko has always scored goals – a remarkable 50 in 74 starts, no less – but with Sergio Aguero at the club, very much played the bridesmaid role. He even scored the ultimate ‘bridesmaid’ goal, getting the oft-forgotten equalizer in the legendary last-day encounter with QPR that clinched City’s first title in 2011/12. Aguero got the winner, of course. Personal terms have been agreed, Roma and City just need to agree a price thought to be in the region of £8m.

As injury problems mount for Everton – Darron Gibson, Mo Besic, Aiden McGeady and Tony Hibbert will all miss the start of the season – there is more bad news for Roberto Martinez concerning center-back John Stones. Manchester United have now made an enquiry…

It’s not been a good summer for Roberto Martinez and Everton. His intention was to strengthen each ‘line’ of his team – Defense, Midfield and Attack – but has spent most of his energies keeping his current squad intact. John Stones looks certain to go, with Chelsea’s second bid of £26m unlikely to be their last. And now that prime target Sergio Ramos is set to sign a new deal with Real Madrid, Manchester United have entered the race. United have an extra £45m in the pot from Angel Di Maria’s departure, so Everton can at least expect to get top dollar for Stones from a Chelsea v Man United bidding war. And Man City may yet still have a say. The Mirror report that United are ready to throw Jonny Evans into the package, which might appeal as Everton are down to the bare bones in central defense.

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham is set to join Crystal Palace in an £8 million deal…

It is not often that a transfer seems to suit all parties, but this one does. Crystal Palace need a striker and Alan Pardew favors one with a physical presence. Sunderland are keen to offload Connor Wickham, who has only performed intermittently since his transfer from Ipswich – scoring just 15 goals in 91 matches. Wickham himself is desperate to kick start his career as a center-forward having spent much of his time last season as a left winger. Sunderland meanwhile look set to get the fee they paid four years ago. Everybody happy. For it to blossom into a real success story, Wickham will link up with Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford and lead Palace to a top ten finish. And Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat will reinvest the money in the striker he craves to lead Sunderland into the top 16. Oh, go on then, top 14.
