Swansea have sacked manager Michael Laudrup and put club captain Garry Monk in charge for the foreseeable future.

Swansea have underperformed in the Premier League this season and sit in 12th place, only two points away from the relegation zone. Laudrup had a successful season last year, finishing in 9th place and qualifying for the Europa League by winning the Capital One Cup. This was year has not as been as successful and Swansea have lost six of their last eight, leading to his dismissal. Garry Monk has a tough task ahead as he tries to put some space between Swansea and the relegation zone while battling Napoli in the Europa League later this month.

Sunderland have opened talks with Manchester United over a possible loan deal for Belgian forward Adnan Januzaj…

It is a further demonstration of intent from Dick Advocaat, which also suggests we can infer certain other key developments. First, Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has appeared in court this week defending child sex charges. Left-sided attacker Jeremain Lens has already been added to the squad, but Januzaj made his first – and so far biggest – impression patrolling the same left-flank. So the signs for Johnson’s future at the club are not good. It also indicates that Man United could finally be close to securing the services of Barcelona’s Pedro, which would limit Januzaj’s opportunities this season. On the plus side for the young Belgian, Sunderland has been a profitable place for the likes of Danny Welbeck, Jonny Evans and Tottenham’s Danny Rose to get their PL ‘wings’ and go onto better things.

Crystal Palace are set to announce their fifth signing of the summer, beating West Brom to the signature of winger Bakary Sako…

Manager Alan Pardew was being a tad coy with confirming the name of his latest acquisition, as – like many transfer dealings – the Wolves winger is just one link in the chain. The 27-year-old Mali international Sako has been in talks with West Brom, but they are thought to prefer Matt Phillips from QPR – a deal that is also close – so Palace have snuck in the backdoor. This in turn will add fuel to the speculation that Palace winger Yannick Bolasie could be about to leave the club. Word coming out of Palace is Bolasie will not be sold this summer. But Tottenham are long-time admirers and Bolasie himself has done nothing to quell the rumours. So don’t be surprised in Sako’s signing triggers a domino effect…

Chelsea go cool on Everton defender John Stones as Jose Mourinho declares his transfer window closed…

Jose Mourinho has suggested that the pursuit of Everton center-back John Stones is over, closing Chelsea’s transfer window and pulling down the blind. Of course, there is nothing to say that Jose won’t be peaking through said blind right up until the official closure on September 1st. And if he wanted to panic John Stones into action thinking he may be about to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime, publicly withdrawing interest would be an effective way to do it. The worry for Roberto Martinez will be a monster £30m+ bid five minutes before midnight on deadline day, rendering him cash-rich but center-back-poor for the remainder of the season. Again, if Jose was looking to prompt a reaction from Everton in order to avoid this – he has done the smart thing. The mind games have started early…

AFC Bournemouth added to their attacking weapons with the acquisition of former Cherry Max-Alain Gradel via transfer from Saint-Etienne.

Of the three promoted sides, the Cherries are looking the best bet to score the most goals this season as they make a pretty good front six even better. The Ivorian winger once spent a season on loan to Bournemouth, making the transition from Ligue 1 a simple one. He had a fantastic goal rate last season for St. Etienne, scoring seventeen goals in only 23 starts. He figures to work his way into a starting job quickly and could carry fantasy relevance in an attack that already features Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson.

Leroy Fer's potential move to Sunderland from relegated QPR looks like it is coming closer to reality in the form of a year-long loan.

The Black Cats have a lot of work to do to avoid a fourth consecutive dramatic relegation escape. Dick Advocaat appears to be looking to a Dutch international to help bolster his midfield with Leroy Fer firmly in his sights. Fer has been relegated in consecutive seasons with Norwich and QPR but he is a quality player that fantasy managers should consider picking up on waivers if they have a need in midfield.

After speculation linking him with a move away from the club this summer, Ashley Young has agreed to a three year extension at Manchester United.

With only this season remaining on his contract before the extension, there was talk that United might sell Young to a mid-table team so as not to lose him on a free at the end of the season. That speculation has been put to rest and a player who was very useful last season will remain at the club, presumably as a valuable squad player for what are likely to be the final three seasons of his top flight career. There aren't too many 34-year-old wingers starting in the Premier League and that's how old Young will be when this deal ends.

Norwich have reignited their interest in Dynamo Kiev striker Dieumerci Mbokani after the club slashed their initial valuation…

We know Norwich boss Alex Neil likes a bargain. The haggling over the price of Robbie Brady dragged on for weeks – although Norwich paid Hull’s £7 million valuation in the end. But Neil has his poker face on again, trying to secure the services of DR Congo international striker Dieumerci Mbokani. Norwich lodged an opening bid of £4.3m, which Dynamo Kiev dismissed valuing the 29-year-old at £8.5m. At that point the deal seemed dead, with Alex Neil picking up his chips and leaving the table. But Kiev chief Sergei Rebrov has since dropped the price to £6m, suggesting an agreement can be reached. Mbokani scored 13 goals in his first season with Kiev, following his £7.7m transfer from Anderlecht. But failed to hold down a first team spot last season and is keen to try his luck in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace new signing Connor Wickham made his debut just hours after putting pen to paper, but his strike partner limped off casting doubt over his selection for the weekend…

Alan Pardew gave a hint to the formation he is looking to play this season with the latest friendly at Dagenham. Palace started with two up front again in a traditional 4-4-2, not the more fluid 4-5-1 that brought success last season. Pardew could be experimenting of course, giving new signing Connor Wickham his debut in the central striking role alongside Frazier Campbell. It is thought Campbell has slipped behind Wickham, Patrick Bamford, Glenn Murray and (perhaps Fulham-bound) Dwight Gayle in the pecking order. So being forced off injured after barely ten minutes will do him no favors at all. Expect Pardew to play two strikers against teams Palace are expected to dominate, but revert to the counter attacking 4-5-1 against the better teams, particularly away from home…

Ryan Shawcross remains a doubt for this weekends’ opener at home to Liverpool as the Stoke skipper battles a persistent back problem which has hampered his pre-season.

Shawcross missed 6-weeks earlier this year due to the issue and the niggling injury has restricted the defender to just 65 minutes of friendly action against Brentford and now the 27 year-old will meet with a specialist amid fears he could require surgery. However there was better news regarding defensive team mate Marc Wilson - who limped out of Sundays’ defeat to FC Porto with an ankle problem - and winger Marko Arnautovic [thigh]. The pair are expected to be ready for game week one. Mark Hughes also hinted that Bojan Krkic is not ready for a start just yet although he has been pleased with the progress of his Spanish striker following his ACL rupture.

Joe Allen looks set to miss the trip to the Britannia this weekend after the Wales international limped out of last Sundays’ friendly win over Swindon Town with barely 12 minutes on the clock.

Allen was hoping to stake a claim for a place in the match-day squad against Stoke but the midfielder is now expected to be sidelined after tweaking his hamstring – a scan will confirm the extent of the problem. Any decision regarding the involvement of Christian Benteke this weekend is likely to be left until the last moment but his debut goal - a stunning strike - and overall performance pleased Rodgers who hinted he could get the nod despite not being 100% match fit. However the same cannot be said of summer signing Firmino who is still lacking sharpness according to Brendan - following his late return from the Copa America - which means the Brazilian can only hope for a place on the bench at very best.

Crystal Palace are sweating on the fitness of French midfielder Yohan Cabaye who limped out of Saturdays’ draw with Fulham due to a knock.

Cabaye suffered a dead leg during a frantic opening 15 minutes at Craven Cottage and although the 29 year-old was able to hobble his way through the first half he did not emerge for the restart. Alan Pardew remains hopeful that Cabaye will be ready but the Eagles boss can take nothing for granted "He's one we're going to have to look at, to make sure he's OK. I think there's a slender chance he might not be available." The news came just hours after Palace confirmed Julian Speroni will miss around a month because of a finger injury. His absence leaves Wayne Hennessey and Alex McCarthy to fight it out for the goalkeepers jersey at Carrow Road on Saturday.
