Arsenal took a major hit to their claim as top dog in the Premier League, after being mugged by Liverpool's attack, in a 5-1 loss that will threaten their position at the top of the table.

A penalty converted by Mikel Arteta accounted for Arsenal's only goal, when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlainw was fouled in the box by Steven Gerrard, but it was already 5-0 at that point. The usually solid partnership at center back between Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny were totally lost today and Liverpool peppered Wojciech Szczesny all day long. Another quiet day from Mesut Ozil will understandably have season-long owners on the verge of selling. The Gunners will attempt to right the ship midweek when they host Manchester United.

Chelsea have been handed a major boost as star Eden Hazard has returned to light training ahead of schedule after a serious ankle injury.

The 26-year-old Belgian, who underwent surgery after fracturing his ankle on international duty at the beginning of June, was expected to be out of action until at least early September. But it appears the former Premier League Player of the Year could be back much sooner than expect after he was spotted on the training pitch at Chelsea's Cobham training ground on Monday. The playmaker's return to light training has come well ahead of schedule, however, it remains unclear whether or not he will be fit for the start of season. While Antonio Conte will likely air on the side of caution with Hazard, the Italian boss will undoubtedly be pleased with the positive strides his star is making.

Crystal Palace announced the signing of Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald in an £8 million move on Monday.

With a move for Ruben Loftus-Cheek and the 20-year-old Riedewald, De Boer is making it clear that youth is the way forward for Palace. De Boer gave Riedewald his senior debut at Ajax in 2013 and will now reunited in south London. Riedewald can be utilized in a variety of roles as a center-half, left-back and defensive midfielder. Said the Dutch international: "I am very pleased to be joining Crystal Palace and after speaking with the gaffer a couple of weeks ago I was delighted to have the opportunity to come over and play in the Premier League. The Premier League is a great competition to be involved in and it is a great opportunity to be working under Frank de Boer once again having been with him at Ajax."

Now above £200 million, Manchester City is closing in on Real Madrid's all-time transfer window record spending of £230 million.

The Sky Blues confirmed a world-record £52 million move for 23-year-old Benjamin Mendy just over a week after breaking the record for a defender with a move for Kyle Walker. The Monaco star fills City's last major hole, although at the expense of criticism with Pep Guardiola now spending more than £200 million in defense in the past year: more than the annual military defense spending of Bosnia as a flurry of well-timed memes pointed out. Said Director of Football Txiki Begiristain: "Benjamin has all the qualities we are looking for in a full-back. For such a young player, he has a wealth of top-level experience. He is undoubtedly one of the world’s best full-backs, our number one target in this position. We are all delighted to have him here at Manchester City."

Luke Shaw has been impressed with United during their 2017 tour, especially in attack.

Despite being sidelined until mid-September, Jose Mourinho felt it was important to keep Shaw involved with the group as he continues his recovery from a foot ligament injury. United are unbeaten in their 4-games to date, scoring ten goals in the process: "You look at the pace and skill we have up top and the finishing ability and it’s frightening," the full-back told MUTV before singling out Lingard for special praise. "Jesse is my standout player so far on this tour. He’s everywhere and always willing to set up the play and chip in with a goal or an assist. Hopefully all the boys can carry on doing their thing." Romelu Lukaku has settled quickly following his arrival from Everton, a deal which could be worth in excess of £90 million, while Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have been in great form.

Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly will not feature for the Red Devils against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday, August 8.

UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings into an incident in United's Europa League Second-Leg clash with Celta Vigo at Old Trafford in which the defender was sent off. Bailly saw red for lashing out at Celta frontman John Guidetti in that match and received an automatic one match ban as a reprimand. However, Europe's football governing body have now opted to add two more games to that suspension. The Ivorian served the first portion of the suspension by sitting out the Europa League final. The UEFA Super Cup will be the second game and the final part of the suspension will be served during United's first Champions League group game.

Antonio Conte remains hopeful that Tiemoue Bakayoko will be available for the Community Shield curtain raiser against Arsenal on 06 August.

A knee injury almost scuppered the chances of the 22-year-old moving to Stamford Bridge following key hole surgery at the end of Monaco’s Championship winning season. Bakayoko was said to have arrived at the club’s training ground – Cobham – three weeks prior to finally completing his £40 million switch, a delay brought about due to his ongoing knee complaint and the rigorous testing to ensure he could make a full recovery. The midfielder is not part of the squad which is currently touring China and Singapore but he is working hard to regain full fitness ahead of the new season. Bakayoko, along with fellow new arrivals Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata will link up with their new teammates on their return.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial's pre-season performance against Real Madrid has not gone unnoticed, least of all by his manager, José Mourinho.

Martial's quick-feet to bypass Lucas Vazquez, Luca Modric and Dani Carvajal as he breezed into Madrid's box from the left before teeing up Jesse Lingard for his goal has received plenty of attention in recent days, and it delighted Mourinho. The boss admitted that he left the Frenchman on for 90 minutes off the back of the sublime assist in order to build his confidence. Martial's experimentation and clear enjoyment on the pitch excited Mourinho, who called on Martial "to bring his talent more in a consistent way." Perhaps Mourinho's tough love for Martial last season is paying dividend now, as Mou added that Martial is training better and working harder than before. Maybe United won't need Perisic after all.

Pedro will return to London "for further review" after suffering concussion and facial injuries in Saturday’s 3-0 friendly win over Arsenal in Beijing.

The 29-year-old was taken for medical tests following a first-half collision with David Ospina which left the winger dazed: "I think he had concussion," Conte said post-match. "For this reason, our doctor preferred to take him to the hospital and check him in the right way." Pedro later tweeted that "everything is OK" and it was thought that he would rejoin the group in Singapore, but the club have now released a statement confirming he will fly back to England. Concussion protocol stipulates: "The player should not be allowed to return to play for at least 6 days after the injury" which means Pedro would have missed the game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The Blues face Internazionale four days later, although Antonio Conte is not prepared to rush the winger back unnecessarily.

Manchester United beat Real Madrid on penalties last night in front of a disappointing crowd at the Levi Stadium, California.

This fixture drew over 109k three years ago in Michigan, but the 68,500 stadium in Santa Clara looked well under-capacity despite the official attendance being given as 65,109. Jesse Lingard opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Casemiro equalised from the spot midway through the second half, and that’s how the game remained until Jose Mourinho’s men edged a shootout 2-1. However, the victory came at a cost as Herrera was forced off just minutes after his introduction: "It must be very painful for Ander to come off," the United boss said in response to questions about the severity of the injury. "I always say to the players that you don't risk anything in friendly matches. If you feel something is coming, even if it is a little injury, get off because the result is not important. Maybe it is ribs but I don't know."

Jose Mourinho has finally given us a little insight into when he expects injured trio Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo to return to action.

All three players travelled to America as part of the clubs summer tour, with many speculating that they could be close to re-joining the group. But, speaking to reporters in San Jose on Saturday, the United manager confirmed the players have "no chance" of being ready for the opening weekend: "It’s good to have them here, the group is really strong" he said before adding. "Luke Shaw is the first one to recover, Marcos [Rojo] will be last and Ashley [Young] will be in between. Luke is September, Young is October and Rojo is December, or maybe January." Zlatan Ibrahimović also continues to rehabilitate at the club and Mourinho hasn’t ruled out the possibility of resigning the striker once he completes his recovery from a serious knee ligament injury.

Manchester City lost one full-back and added another on Sunday, with a deal for another close to being completed.

The Sky Blues moved for the Real Madrid right-back just a week after signing right-back Kyle Walker in a world-record move for a defender. Said Director of Football Txiki Begiristain: "Danilo is a fine player who offers great versatility to our squad. He can operate in several different roles in both defence and midfield, increasing Pep’s options ahead of the new season." Meanwhile, Aleksandar Kolarov has left the club to join AS Roma with Monaco's Benjamin Mendy heading to Los Angeles to take a medical with City ahead of another record-setting move.
