Newcastle United awoke from a long stretch of struggling for goals with a four goal effort today, two of which were scored by Moussa Sissoko in a 1-4 battering of Hull City.

The post-Yohan Cabaye era finally looked promising for Magpie fans as Newcastle took advantage of some poor defending as well as displaying a more fluid attack. Sissoko would open the scoring and would add another to give him three on the season in the second half after the Tigers had cut the game close. Loic Remy added to his fine campaign, scoring for the second game in a row, giving him thirteen in total. A late score from Vurnon Anita sealed the three points. Sissoko made an instant fantasy impact when he arrived to St. James' Park last season, so today's performance could be a sign of more productive days ahead.

Andros Townsend's spectacular strike gave an experimental England line-up a creditable draw against Italy in Turin.

Saints' striker Graziano Pelle's first-half header gave Italy a deserved first half lead, but England were lifted by the introduction of several substitutes in the second half. Andros Townsend was one of them, and the winger capped a fine display with a rising 20-yard drive 11 minutes, while Ryan Mason made is debut and Kyle Walker came on at right-back. Harry Kane got his first international start and gave an energetic display upfront alongside Wayne Rooney as Roy Hogson's men left Turin with a 1-1 draw.

Tom Carroll is battling to save his season after suffering an ankle ligament injury while on international duty with England under-21s.

Carroll captained England in Prague last Friday scoring the only goal in a narrow win but the Tottenham loanee may not wear the Swansea colours again with a 4-6 week initial absence suggested. Fortunately the Jacks are pretty well stocked in midfield and although the news is disappointing for the youngster Garry Monk has a number of options following the arrival of Jack Cork in January and the form of team mates Sung-Yueng Ki and Glyfi Sigurdsson. Indeed Carroll has failed to make the match-day squad since the away win at Turf Moor in February suggesting his time at the Liberty Stadium is up. Swansea are also waiting on the results of Jefferson Montero’s [thigh] scan and the winger remains a doubt for GW31 while Leon Britton is hopeful of overcoming a back problem.

There were concerns in the Manchester United camp on Tuesday as England defender Chris Smalling was ushered from the pitch during the first half friendly against Italy in Turin.

However a spokesman for the FA confirmed that Smalling was withdrawn after "feeling unwell" giving the United defender every chance of recovery before the visit of Aston Villa this weekend. Louis van Gaal’s side could be further boosted by the news that Dutch striker Robin van Persie is pushing for a recall although a place on the bench is the best he can hope for after 6 weeks out plus the form of captain Wayne Rooney. With Marcos Rojo back up to full fitness the treatment room at the Anon Training Complex is looking a little sparse with only Luke Shaw and James Wilson currently sidelined although the pair are close to a comeback.

Forgotten man and perennial injury absentee Abou Diaby made a timely return to action for Arsenal on Tuesday playing over 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly win against Brentford.

The match arranged at the London Colney training ground provided the perfect opportunity for Arsene Wenger to assess the fitness of a number of his recent crocked stars. Abou Diaby [thigh & calf] was joined by Mikel Arteta [ankle], Mathieu Debuchy [shoulder] and Jack Wilshere [ankle] with each playing at least a half. Although this weekend is likely to prove a little too early for the quartet – certainly in terms of a start – the good news is that for the first time [in a long while] Arsenal are making progress on the injury front. Both Aaron Ramsey [groin] and Tomas Rosicky [illness] should be fine for GW31 but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain [hamstring] and Danny Welbeck [knee] will continue to receive treatment ahead of the game.

Theo Walcott started England's friendly against Italy and played for 55 largely uninspiring minutes in the match.

Playing time has been hard for Theo Walcott to come by at Arsenal and for England since he returned from a long-term injury layoff in November. With form eluding him, his chances have been few which only leads to more rust. With England playing a friendly, he got 55 minutes of competitive action but failed to register a shot on target. His pass to Harry Kane as the second half got under way at least led to an England shot on target and he had a shot blocked in the first half but that was about it on the day. He will look back on this as an opportunity squandered even if the stakes of the match weren't big.

Marouane Fellaini continued his excellent play with his third goal for Belgium over this international break in their 1-0 win over Israel.

The big Belgian has been in excellent goal-scoring form for both Manchester United and Belgium and it continued as group favorites Belgium took six points from their two Euro2016 qualifiers over the break. Fellaini scored a brace against minnows Cyprus and added the only goal in the Tuesday win over Israel. The opposition may not have been exceptional in either case but the points were crucial for Belgium and the goals have been big for Fellaini as he has been solidifying a place in Louis Van Gaal's first choice eleven.

Belgium got the six points it needed over the international break but Vincent Kompany's worrying drop in form continued as he saw red against Israel on Tuesday.

Vincent Kompany's fall from grace has been steep and it has come at an unexpected time in his career. Rapidly approaching his 29th birthday, Kompany should be at the height of his powers as a central defender with experience trending up as physical abilities start the process of waning. Instead, Kompany has experienced a significant decline in the quality of his play and it appears to be more than just a temporary dip. Papered over somewhat by City's title win last season, his failings have been more pronounced this season as City are struggling to maintain their spot in second. If you have Kompany is some form of unique ownership format then it's past time to see what you can get for him as his name is now bigger than his performance on the pitch.

Petr Cech will be assessed after picking up a muscular problem during Saturdays’ Euro qualifying draw against Latvia while his Czech team mate Tomas Rosicky won’t be involved in Slovakia because of illness.

The extent of the Cech injury is not currently known but if the Chelsea stopper did suffer a strain – even a minor grade one tear – then 2/3 weeks on the sidelines is realistic. With Mark Schwarzer now plying his trade at Leicester Mourinho could be forced to use the inexperienced Mitchell Beeney or Jamal Blackman as back-up for Thibaut Courtois. Chelsea take on Stoke this weekend at Stamford Bridge and the home side will be hoping top scorer Diego Costa [hamstring] will be available while John Obi Mikel is also closing in on a return following knee surgery.
Mar 31 - 4:52 AM

Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill confirmed post-match on Sunday that influential captain and Southampton midfielder Steven Davis was withdrawn during the win over Finland because of a thigh issue.

Davis became the second Southampton player to return from international duty with a problem following the withdrawal of Matt Targett [England under-21] although the extent of either injury is not yet known. However with the exception of long-term absentees [Jay Rodriguez, Fraser Forster & Emmanuel Mayuka] Ronald Koeman has a pretty healthy squad at his disposal and options in midfield are plentiful. If Davis does miss out this weekend [away Everton] then the Saints will need to make at least one enforced change from the side which beat Burnley with Victor Wanyama or James Ward-Prowse most likely to come into the eleven.

Raheem Sterling expects to be available for Liverpool's important match against Arsenal this weekend despite an early exit from the Three Lions for a toe injection.

The injection is supposed to heal damaged tissue in the area around the speedster's toe. Unless there is an unexpected setback between now and Saturday, one would imagine that based on the crucial nature of the upcoming match, Brendan Rodgers will name Sterling to his XI. With Daniel Sturridge already sidelined, the odds of Mario Balotelli getting a start are increasing by the day.
Mar 30 - 3:11 PM

Rolando Aarons is closing in on a return for Newcastle United, with the young talent already stumping for a chance to participate in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday.

In a season filled with many disappointments at St. James', Aarons has looked a real prospect in his appearances early in the season before his hamstring knocked him out of action since November 1. Once he is ready, you can be certain that John Carver and the Newcastle brass will want to get him on the pitch. Question marks are already circling around his future with the club with a year remaining on his contract so with a handful of games remaining, now is the chance to showcase his talents ahead of the summer transfer window should the club look to deal.
