Manchester City turned the screw on their Premier League title rivals by beating Southampton 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Yaya Toure opened the scoring with a penalty after Edin Dzeko had been fouled, before Rickie Lambert levelled things up from the spot as Southampton started dominating the game. However, goals from Samir Nasri and Dzeko in first-half stoppage time put City well in control, and a late effort from Stevan Jovetic made it 14 wins from 15 home league games this season. Manuel Pellegrini's men move within a point of Liverpool with a game in hand and the two sides face each other in Week 34.

Tony Pulis' tastes have taken a significant step up with new ownership after the news that Albion bid £21 million for Portugal holding midfielder William Carvalho.

Yes, the bid was reportedly rejected but the notion that West Brom would even be bidding in this neighborhood is a bit of a shock. Nothing should be too shocking given the new TV deal but West Brom certainly started out the summer more conservatively than most of their Premier League peers. The rumor certainly didn't imply that the deal was entirely dead meaning a larger bid could land the former Arsenal target.

Celtic have confirmed the signing of West Brom defender Cristian Gamboa from West Bromwich Albion on a permanent transfer.

Gamboa never really found his footing in the Premier League. With the arrival of Tony Pulis and his tendency to play four center backs across the back, Gamboa was even further marginalized than he had been previously. The move makes sense for Albion and the player who was surely tired of being as far out of the first team picture as he was.

The influx of attacking options at Vicarage Road continues as the Hornets announced the signing of Stefano Okaka from Anderlecht.

With Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo the presumptive starters at the forward spots, Okaka will either be slotted in more of an attacking midfield role or he will be a reserve. Similar to Isaac Success, Okaka depends more on speed and crafty dribbling more so than the sort of power that Deeney and Ighalo bring. The question is really one of playing time assuming that there's not a shocking departure from one of the two starters.

The Saints have moved to replace Graziano Pelle with a record transfer for Lille's 22-year-old forward Sofiane Boufal.

Charlie Austin's knees are a huge question mark and Shane Long not exactly the sort of presence to take advantage of crosses from Dusan Tadic, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond. Given that situation, the arrival of Boufal, a young forward rated highly for a variety of skills including dribbling, passing, and set pieces. At 5'6", it is surprising that he is rated well for his heading - think of him as a poor man's Sergio Aguero in that regard. Given he is now the Saints record signing you can assume that he's going to be given every opportunity to start.

Abel Hernandez's proposed move to Championship club Aston Villa for £20 million has fallen through after the two clubs failed to agree terms.

Villa were keen to sign the Uruguayan striker after he scored 22 goals in the Championship last season as Hull were promoted. It appeared that they were willing to break he Championship record to do so. However, it now looks like Villa's pursuit has failed. The agent of Manchester City's Joe Hart has reportedly confirmed to Italian media that the goalkeeper is set for a medical at Torino.

Said agent Jonathan Barnett: "Yes, Joe Hart will play with Torino. It's done. The player said yes to the club and also Manchester City have given the green light. It is all true. Tomorrow [Tuesday] Hart will have a medical in Turin." The 29-year-old keeper quickly fell out of favor under Pep Guardiola in the final weeks of the preseason and now looks to be the No. 3 keeper after the arrival of Claudio Bravo from Barcelona. Hart has reportedly received permission to leave England camp today to complete the season-long loan to the Serie A side, who finished 12th in the league last season.

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers looks set for a season-long loan to Middlesbrough with a medical planned for Tuesday.

With the impending £35 million arrival of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding ahead of him in the pecking order, Chambers' playing time looked to be extremely limited. But the 21-year-old appears to be headed to Middlesbrough, who sit in fifth place after an undefeated start through the opening three games. But the big news out of the Arsenal camp today concerns the future of midfielder Jack Wilshere. The Arsenal star has reportedly talked to Arsene Wenger about his future at the club and wants more playing time after being left out of the England team with a loan move being considered.

Sergio Aguero is facing the prospect of a ban although his enforced spell on the sidelines could not have been timed better after picking up an injury.

The Argentine was at the centre of a media storm on Sunday when cameras at the Etihad spotted Aguero thrusting an elbow in the face of West Ham defender Winston Reid. The incident, which was missed by referee Andre Marriner, carries an automatic three-game suspension and an FA review panel will analyse video footage today before deciding on whether to charge the City striker with violent conduct. However, the news that Aguero picked up a calf injury during the same game may help to soften the blow. The Argentina FA confirmed on Monday that the 28-year-old had withdrawn from the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Uruguay and Venezuela. Aguero will undergo further tests to determine the severity of the problem.

Wayne Rooney will retain the England captaincy following an announcement by Sam Allardyce on Monday.

Allardyce had refused to comment on whether Rooney would continue to skipper his country since taking over in July, but revealed as part of yesterdays’ media briefing that the Manchester United player would lead the Three Lions. "Wayne has been an excellent captain for England and the manner in which he has fulfilled the role made it an easy decision for me to ask him to continue," Allardyce told the Football Association's official website. "Wayne's record speaks for itself. He is the most senior member of the squad and he is hugely respected by his peers. All of these factors point towards him being the right choice to lead the team." Rooney took over from Steven Gerrard in 2014 and will become England’s most-capped outfield player [116th appearance] on Saturday if he is selected for the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.
