Liverpool have made an initial 6.5 million pound bid for Sunderland's Simon Mignolet.

While it seems like this transfer is moving ahead, there are doubts. Sunderland are holding out for more money, and there are still other clubs interested in Mignolet (Arsenal, for instance). Meanwhile at Anfield, Reina's status is unclear and may still hinge on Victor Valedes' "will he or won't he" routine at Barcelona.

Defensive problems are beginning to mount for Belgium ahead of Friday night’s Euro 2016 quarter-final clash with Wales following the news that Jan Vertonghen has sprained his ankle in training.

The extent of the problem is not yet known, but manager Marc Wilmots is already considering his options in defence after Thomas Vermaelen picked up his second yellow card of the tournament during the win over Hungary, ruling him out of tomorrows match. Manchester City centre-back Jason Denayer is likely to partner Toby Alderweireld in the heart of the Belgium back four while injuries to Vincent Kompany, Dedryck Boyata, Nicolas Lombaerts and Bjorn Engels mean that 21-year-old Jordan Lukaku – younger brother of Romelu – could be drafted in for only his fifth senior cap. Belgium are expected to provide an update later this evening when they arrive in Lille.

Belgium have been dealt a blow in defense ahead of their match with Wales as Jan Vertonghen has picked up an ankle injury in training.

Thomas Vermaelen will miss out against Wales as he serves a suspension so the left half of the Belgian defensive line that had started the entire tournament are at risk of missing out, giving a boost to Wales attacking players like Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey in the fantasy game while lowering the value of defensive investment for Belgium. Jason Denayer would likely partner Toby Alderweireld at center back should Vertonghen miss out while Romleu Lukaku's younger brother, Jordan, looks set to fill in for Vermaelen. The deadline for transfers in the official Euro fantasy game is a few hours away, so there is little chance we will get a firm answer as to Vertonghen's availability before then.

West Bromwich Albion confirmed midfielder James Morrison has signed a new contract to remain at the club this summer.

Reports claimed Sunderland and Middlesbrough, Morrison's former club before arriving at West Brom in 2007, were chasing the 30-year-old, whose contract was set to expire in a few days. But the Baggies secured Morrison for two more years through the summer of 2019 with a club option for a third year. Last season, Morrison made 18 Premier League appearances, recording three goals and three assists, before suffering a knee injury that kept him out for the final three months of the season.

Rumors have linked demoted Newcastle with Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie as they look to rebound back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

It looks like Crystal Palace is interested in triggering the release clause in Andros Townsend's contract creating some needs and surplus cash at St. James' Park. The links to both Gayle and Ritchie have been circulating for some time but reports in the Press Association today have indicated that moves might be coming close. The deal for Ritchie is said to be in the neighborhood of £10m with the player headed to Tyneside to negotiate personal terms. Ritchie was slightly disappointing moving up to the Premier League after an exceptional season in Bournemouth's promotion season. Perhaps the Cherries view Ritchie as unable to make the leap to above-average Premier League performer and want to cash in before that opinion is confirmed.

With Belgium manager Marc Wilmots indicating that Michy Batshuayi was excused from training to take a medical the rumor mill has him close to a move to Chelsea.

Batshuayi has been linked with Crystal Palace, Spurs and Chelsea within the past week so it is at least plausible that his medical could be with any of those clubs. Conspiracy theorists have suggested that Batshuayi's camp circulated the Palace rumor to push the pace with Chelsea and Spurs with Chelsea seemingly in the lead as of this morning. Presumably we'll know the answer soon enough but it looks like Diego Costa might have some company/competition on the forward line at Stamford Bridge this season.

Nathan Ake will look to follow up a strong season on loan at Watford with another step forward on the south coast as he joins Bournemouth on loan from Chelsea for the 2016-17 season.

The move to Bournemouth marks Ake's third loan move since his arrival at Chelsea. He had a brief stint at Reading in the Championship before his Young Player of the Season turn at Vicarage Road last season. Able to play multiple positions, it isn't entirely clear where Ake fits in with the Cherries. Charlie Daniels (left back) and the central pairing of Simon Francis and Steve Cook were solid in the positions Ake is most asssociated with. Perhaps Francis will play on the right regularly - he split time between center back and right back about evenly last season - with Ake playing centrally. Perhaps Ake will just be excellent depth for what was a thin squad last season. Regardless, Bournemouth made a solid, if short-term, acquisition today.

Pablo Zabaleta's star fell significantly at the Etihad last season and now comes word that he may be on his way to the Eternal City with Roma.

All the signs are there for a move. Zabaleta is in the final year of his contract. He lost the starting role at City to Bacary Sagna last season. Roma specifically and Serie A in general seem to love fading Premier League outside backs. This has led to a seemingly-reasonable rumor that Zabaleta will be moving to Roma for a fee of £2.5 million. City get his wages off the books and make room for Pep to bring in a defender of his own choosing. Look for more deals like this over the course of the summer as Guardiola transforms his new squad.

Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim has told Turkish sports magazine AMK Spor that a deal for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is "almost done".

The 31-year-old struggled with form and fitness throughout the 2015/16 campaign and has agreed in principle to leave Anfield after almost a decade for a deal rumoured to be worth around £5million. Skrtel will be joined by Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel but former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie looks set to leave the club following a disappointing season in Süper Lig. Jürgen Klopp will now look to bolster his options in defence with Kolo Toure also leaving Anfield. Liverpool have emerged as the bookies favourites to land want-away Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic. And the transfer business could continue, despite the arrival of Sadio Mane, with Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuaín reportedly rejecting a contract extension to put the Reds on high alert.

Marc Wilmots has confirmed that he expects Eden Hazard to be ready to face Wales on Friday despite picking up a thigh injury during the rout over Hungary.

Hazard deservedly took all the accolades for a scintillating performance in Toulouse last Sunday as Belgium swept the unfancied Hungarians aside with consummate ease. A dazzling solo effort on 79 minutes capped an excellent night for Hazard although there were concerns following his withdrawal just moments later. "Hazard felt a kind of thigh contraction at half-time against Hungary, that's why I replaced him in the second half," Wilmots said. However, the bad news for Wales is that the Chelsea star will be ready for the quarter-final clash this week: "I think he will be back in training on Thursday. He is in the care of the physios and is working with them. He is recovering well enough that he should be 100 per cent the day before the match."

Tim Krul’s time on Tyneside could be up after Newcastle confirmed the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels from Gent.

Krul has been side-lined since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty in October 2015, although he is said to be closing in on a return to full fitness. However, the arrival of Sels might signal the end for Krul after the 24-year-old was given assurances by Rafa Benitez that he would get a fair crack at claiming the No.1 jersey. The news will alert the likes of Everton and newly promoted Middlesbrough plus former manager Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace – linked heavily previously - and with only one-year remaining on his current deal, Newcastle look set to cash in on the Dutch international.

Southampton are set to join the race for Saido Berahino after selling Sadio Mane to Liverpool.

Berahino is reportedly on the market and Stoke City have been discussed as the top destination for the 22-year-old English player. Southampton will now join the sweepstakes and try to pry the youngster away. He would be a great addition to already signed Nathan Redmond and could play alongside Graziano Pelle.
