Spain went from tournament contenders to a team in complete disarray after being shocked by The Netherlands in a 1-5 defeat to open their group stage.

Today's result is the worst defeat ever handed to a defending champion in the history of World Cup play. The opening half hour looked like the script everyone expected, Spain possession and persistence led to a penalty awarded to when Diego Costa was tripped in the box. Xabi Alonso converted from the spot and it seemed at that point, the worst that could happen would be a draw. But they went on to concede five times, with each goal exposing them more and more. David Silva was not much of an influence and Fernando Torres offer no help as a substitute. Spain can afford to slip like this once, but must right the ship against a tough Chilean side next week.

Hull City announced the dual signings of young defenders Harry Maguire and Andrew Robertson from Sheffield United and Dundee United respectively.

In his first year back in the big time, Steve Bruce's transfer approach was all about buying known Premier League quantities who could improve Hull City's chances of staying up. With today's dual-signing of Maguire and Robertson and the earlier signing of Tom Ince, Steve Bruce has departed from that approach and started to stock the shelves with younger players with talent. Maguire has been scouted by Manchester United and Chelsea at times and has been compared favorably to John Terry as a young player. Robertson, named Scotland Young Player of the Year this past season, is a left back who plays solid defense and has scored some spectacular goals on his rapid rise from amateur football to the Scotish national team and now the Premier League. Both will likely be eased in behind veterans but there is some excitement about Hull's after this summer.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez are understood to be close to linking-up with former manager Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham

All major UK sports media outlets are running with this story today, with a BBC reporter going as far as suggesting personal terms have been agreed, despite the fact Rodriguez is recovering from a serious knee injury. Schneiderlin has become one of the Premier League's most complete central midfield players and had been linked to Arsenal all summer, so his capture would be quite the coup for Spurs, who have had a quiet summer in comparison to their rivals. Southampton's squad has been decimated since the end of last season, losing their manager and all key players, as the board have decided to cash in on their most important assets. Pochettino, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers, Luke Shaw and Ricky Lambert have already moved on and it's looking like an extremely difficult campaign ahead for new manager Ronald Koeman.

Calum Chambers is officially an Arsenal player according to the club's Twitter feed. He joins Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, and David Ospina as confirmed new arrivals at the club.

Mesut Ozil's late capture last summer may have been the initial statement of intent but Arsenal have come out of the gates early and with intent in this summer's transfer window. Most supporters and pundits listed their needs as a forward, right back, reserve goalkeeper, defensive cover and holding midfielder to start the summer. With three weeks left before the season kicks off and five weeks remaining in the summer transfer period the club has addressed four of the five needs in style. Calum Chambers represents both defensive depth and versatility with a CV that resembles Phil Jones with the ability to play right back, center back and holding midfield. It is unlikely that the Southampton product will feature regularly this season but he will likely be groomed behind Debuchy and the Koscielny/Mertesacker pairing for a season or two before getting his chance to start.

Manchester City got their International Champions Cup campaign off to a flying start with an impressive 5-1 win over AC Milan at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

It's only a friendly tournament, but this was an impressive performance by Manuel Pellegrini's men against a strong AC Milan side. Stevan Jovetic was the star, scoring twice and picking up the man of the match award. With Alvaro Negredo out injured for the next few months and Sergio Aguero still nursing recurring hamstring and groin problems, Jovetic will be expected to step up and play a more prominent role this season, and he's got his pre-season off to a flying start. Scott Sinclair continued his decent form with another pre-season goal, while Jesus Navas and Kelechi Iheanacho added the others.

Jan Vertonghen insists he wants to remain with Tottenham and has confirmed he has been offered a new five-year contract to remain with the north London club.

Barcelona have been linked with a move for Vertonghen, but the defender has been very positive about his future with Spurs in recent interviews and this is the first clear indication that he plans to follow Hugo Lloris by signing a new five-year contract. The 27-year-old Belgium international also revealed he is yet to return to pre-season training following the World Cup because of an ankle injury, which could puts his participation in the opening weeks of the Premier League season in doubt.

Arsenal have announced what could be a great bargain by signing Nice and Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina on a permanent deal for £3m.

Wojciech Szcesny has continued to improve and grow into the role of Arsenal's #1 goalkeeper, what he hasn't had in recent years is a player capable of mounting a legitimate challenge for his place. In David Ospina, Arsenal has a legitimate alternative and Szczesny has potential competition. With only three weeks until the start of the season it seems likely that Szczesny will start the season as the starter but should he falter or his development stall, it is possible Ospina will be given a run as the first team starter. This move significantly devalues Szczesny in draft/unique ownership-type fantasy leagues.

Dejan Lovren has completed his move to Liverpool for a fee of £20m.

Liverpool have acquired yet another Southampton player, this time center-back Dejan Lovren. Lovren is a very solid defender who had an incredible season last year and should help Liverpool's average defense. Liverpool were great in attack last season but can certainly use an upgrade in defense and Lovren should provide immediate help. Lovren will likely be a starter on day one and should have solid fantasy value throughout the season.

Both Swansea City midfielder Leon Britton and forward/winger Marvin Emnes are struggling with knee injuries that have ruled them out for the Swans Premier League opener against Manchester United.

Britton's specific injury is a bone bruise to the knee while Emnes is dealing with a cartilage issue. Britton was most likely to play a part in the season opener with Emnes destined for a bench role at best would he be available. Neither are fantasy options nor does their absence create any.

Liverpool have pulled out of a deal to sign QPR striker Loic Remy.

While no official statement has been released, the majority of media outlets are reporting that Remy failed his medical, leaving Liverpool no choice but to withdraw their £8.5million offer. However, Sky Sports have suggested that Fabio Borini's refusal to move to Sunderland on a permanent basis is the real sticking point, with Brendan Rodgers unable to move for another striker when he already has Borini, Daniel Sturridge and Ricky Lambert in his squad. Whatever the reason, the collapse leaves Remy's career in limbo.

Tottenham completed their pre-season tour of North American with a comfortable win over Chicago Fire.

This was the final game of Tottenham's US tour and they leave undefeated after drawing with Seattle, and beating Toronto and Chicago. An early goal from Harry Kane and a late goal from Arron Lennon sealed a 2-0 win here, with Erik Lamela impressive again. Kane got a fair amount of pitch time towards the end of last season and is expected to play a key squad role this season, with Mauricio Pochettino keen to give the younger players an opportunity to impress as he did at Southampton.

Sunderland have signed Netherlands international Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

This is an important deal for Sunderland, who had no recognised left-back in their squad after Marcos Alonso's loan deal ended back in May. van Aanholt never made the grade at Chelsea, spending the past two seasons out on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, but he is highly regarded in Holland and very nearly made the Dutch World Cup squad. It will be interesting to see how he copes back in the Premier League, as he could be a fantasy option worth keeping an eye on if he secures a starting spot at the Stadium of Light.
