Sunderland have signed Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.

Pantilimon came in to City's lineup a few times last year when Joe Hart was struggling and seems to have made a big enough impression to be brought in as a starter. Pantilimon has stated he wants to start and it sounds like he has been promised a starting spot ahead of Vito Mannone. Sunderland showed huge improvement towards the end of last season and Pantilimon could be a sneaky fantasy choice when the matchup is right next season.

Disaster has been averted for Newcastle United as third choice goalkeeper Jak Alnwick was passed fit today after picking up a shoulder injury during the Capital One Cup defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday night.

The injury topped a hugely disappointing evening for the young stopper who sent Spurs well on their way to a 4-0 victory by dropping a regulation catch allowing Nabil Bentaleb to open the scoring. Alnwick is hoping to secure a new contract on Tyneside and in the absence of the injured Tim Krul and Rob Elliot has been handed the perfect opportunity to prove his worth. However having been on the receiving end of a mauling at the Emirates confidence is low after conceding nine goals in two-and-a half games but Alnwick will get a chance to right his wrongs after further tests revealed his shoulder injury won’t be enough to keep him out of Sundays’ derby against Sunderland.

Kieran Trippier continued his hot streak this weekend with 13 fantasy points against Southampton.

Trippier helped Burnley keep a clean sheet against a hurt Southampton squad and that lead him to a 13 fantasy point outing. Trippier is tied with Ryan Bertrand for first amongst fantasy defenders with 156 points on the season. Both players have shown an ability to provide fantasy points even without clean sheets and both players remain top options going forward.

Stephen Ireland is expected to recover from a "bang on the knee" in time to face Chelsea at the Britannia Stadium on Monday night.

Mark Hughes will need to check on a number of first team players ahead of game week 17 as Stoke head into the Festive period hoping to secure the points their recent performances have deserved. Bojan Krkic [hip] has returned to training while Glenn Whelan [hamstring] was back ahead of schedule last weekend - Victor Moses [thigh] is targeting early January. Robert Huth and Marc Wilson are both fit again and vying for a place in the heart of defence while Jon Walters has been in excellent form recently although with an ongoing knee issue the Irish international will need to be checked throughout this busy fixture period.

Adam Lallana continued to disappoint fantasy managers in Liveprool's 3-0 loss to Manchester United.

Lallana has dropped off significantly from last season and Liverpool's lack of success hasn't helped. They are clearly missing the spark that Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge provided last season and their whole team is struggling as a result. Lallana's fantasy value might go up with Sturridge returning from injury but we wouldn't bet on him to be a good fantasy option this season.

Mario Balotelli has been suspended for GW17 for posting an abusive Instagram photo.

Balotelli will miss Liverpool's match against Arsenal this weekend and will have to pay a $40,000 fine. The striker has had a rough season as he has yet to score in the Premier League and hasn't been able to replace any of the production lost through the departure of Luis Suarez and the injury to Daniel Sturridge. He is not a great fantasy option as of now but it's worth noting Balotelli can be streaky and can quickly become an option if he finds the back of the net soon.

After missing three league matches due to a hamstring issue, Steven Naismith returned to Everton's starting XI and promptly delivered a goal and an assist in the Toffee's win over QPR Monday night.

Naismith got off to a red-hot start to begin the season, scoring once in each of Everton's first three matches, but could only add another between then and this past weekend as his form dipped and then his hamstring put him on the shelf. Naismith will never be a flair pick at the forward position but he is generally undervalued in most fantasy formats. In the Yahoo game, he can also pad his numbers with some non-scoring categories that many other forwards are rarely able to do, speaking to his workman's like approach that Roberto Martinez recognizes. He may not repeat his 20 point Yahoo haul this weekend away to Southampton, but a home game against Stoke to follow after promises plenty of chances.

Mesut Ozil was spotted heading to a training session before the weekend win over Newcastle and is hopeful that he will return sooner than the January estimate.

There isn't a great deal of time between now and the suggested January return date that has been mooted for Mesut Ozil's return from his knee ligament injury. That said, returning in the early part of January would be a big boost for Arsene Wenger's men. Ozil told Arsenal's internal media group "I am working every day to get myself fit and I am on the right path now. It won't be much too much longer before I am back on the pitch. I hope to be back training with the whole team again as soon as possible." Make of that what you will.

Arsene Wenger has indicated that he isn't certain about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's prospects for playing against Liverpool on Sunday after injuring his groin against Newcastle.

The Ox was already playing in an unusual spot last weekend with Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, and Jack Wilshere all injured. When Oxlade-Chamberlain went off with a groin problem it left Arsenal incredibly thin at the base of midfield with only Mathieu Flamini, the recently returned Francis Coquelin, and 17-year-old Ainsley Maitland-Niles to fill two spots with none offering a great deal going forward. Oxlade-Chamberlain faces a Saturday fitness test before there is any additional clarity on this situation so managers in salary cap leagues with early Saturday transfer deadlines should consider the Ox out unless you have a huge tolerance for risk and/or a great bench.

With the busy festive schedule ramping up, fantasy managers will be looking for cheap bench players that can offer something should a fantasy starter be rested and Scott Arfield can provide that in midfield.

Arfield raised some eyebrows by scoring against Chelsea on opening day but has failed to find the net since. After the acquisition of George Boyd from Hull at the transfer deadline, Boyd has been the more dangerous of the Clarets' regular starting wide midfielders but Arfield at the very least has his position nailed down, and at a price of just 2.9m in Yahoo, he can provide some depth, and you never know, a possible nice score in place of one of your regulars should they miss a match.

With the current rash of injuries among the Reds, Brendan Rodgers has been using three centerbacks and playing Alberto Moreno further up the pitch as more of a wingback/midfielder which adds to his fantasy value.

This would be extremely significant if Liverpool were defending anywhere near adequately right now, but they are not, so expecting a clean sheet along with any potential attacking returns from Moreno this weekend is asking a bit much as they host Arsenal this weekend. Still, any out-of-position players moved farther up the pitch are worth alerting as the chance of reaping points through attacking and defending is always possible.

Stephane Sessegnon collected three shots on target in West Brom's 1-0 win over Aston Villa in Week 16.

Sessegnon is a frustrating player. He has moments when he absolutely sparkles but then he'll disappear for long stretches. He was at his active best in Week 16 firing three shots on target. He didn't get a goal but between the shots on target and winning four fouls, he put up a strong fantasy total for a West Brom team that didn't put up great stats despite winning. The problem is that history tells us that this is the anomaly rather than the start of a trend. Probably best not to overreact to one active match as Sessegnon is just as likely to be on the bench of ninety minutes in Week 17 as he is to repeat the double digit performance.
