Chile put the nail in the coffin of defending champions while simultaneously punching a ticket to the Round of 16 with a 0-2 win over Spain.

Chileans were licking their chops for a crack at a Spain side that were still licking their wounds, so much so that Chilean fans were breaking down walls to get in and see it. Gary Medel once again played center back and was part of a stone wall that Spain could not penetrate. Chile now advance along with The Netherlands to the knockout stage, with a head to head matchup left to play to determine their seedings.

Michael Dawson contributed to a solid outing against Arsenal on Saturday but faces the possibility of time out with an injured ankle.

Apparently the North London rivalry didn't recede from Michael Dawson's consciousness despite his move to Hull City. In his first post-Spurs match against Arsenal he contributed four blocked shots, two tackles, two interceptions and even managed a shot on target for a massive 15 point performance in the Yahoo format. Enthusiasm will be slightly tempered though as he now faces questions over an ankle issue. Check back later in the week for a more definitive assessment of the injury and his status for Week 9 and beyond.

Craig Gardner isn't a big name but he continues to churn out extremely solid fantasy results as West Brom recover from their early season swoon.

If you had bet on Craig Gardner being among the Baggies' better fantasy midfielders at the beginning of the season you'd probably have been looked at like you were a bit mad. And rightly so. There was very little in his history to indicate that Gardner would start churning out high single digit and low double digit fantasy performances (in the Yahoo format) but that's exactly what he's been doing. Two blocked shots, four interceptions and three tackles were the formula this week and that isn't too much different that what he's generally been producing.

Danny Welbeck was at it again over the weekend scoring late to secure Arsenal a point in their 2-2 draw with Hull City.

The England striker hasn't quite lived up to the hopes of Arsenal supporters who thought he might turn out to be Daniel Sturridge 2.0 after his move from Manchester United. While Welbeck hasn't been quite as spectacular as Sturridge was upon his move to Liverpool he has been effective. Against Hull City he notched his second Premier League goal in five starts while pulling his overall total to five goals in seven starts across all competitions. It will be interesting to see if he can scale further heights if Arsenal ever get a healthy first choice eleven on the field at the same time.

Kieran Gibbs enjoyed another strong outing from a fantasy point of view even if the end result for Arsenal was far from satisfactory.

The big knock against Kieran Gibbs the real player and the fantasy player has been his propensity to be injured frequently. When he has played this season he has taken his game to a new level, especially at the attacking end of the pitch. Perhaps the presence of Alexis Sanchez in front of him is giving him more opportunity but whatever the reason, Gibbs has strung together a number of strong "phantom point" performances including this week's that included a shot on target, two successful crosses, a corner won, two interceptions and two tackles. If only Arsenal could keep a clean sheet.

Adnan Januzaj got a start in the match against West Brom but didn't contribute a great deal.

It was a bit of a shock to see Januzaj's name on the team sheet given that Ander Herrera was also back and there is generally a glut of attacking players available to Louis Van Gaal. The Belgium international didn't do a great deal to endear himself to his new manager during the 2-2 draw. With Rooney back from suspension after the Chelsea match and Falcao presumably recovered from his international duties, it seems unlikely that Januzaj will get another start in the league soon.

Angel Di Maria continued his exceptional form on Monday despite United dropping two points to the Baggies at the Hawthorns.

Angel Di Maria continues to be one of THE signings of the summer. He didn't score a goal but he got an assist and generally filled the stat sheet with goodness. In addition to his assist on Marouane Fellaini's goal at the start of the second half the Argentine managed three shots on target, three successful crosses, and five corners won. On another day it would have been a huge day for him instead of just a very good one.

Daley Blind earned Manchester United a point with his goal to tie the score late in the match.

Before anyone gets too excited about Daley Blind's potential as a fantasy player, it is worth noting that he has no track record of scoring on a regular basis. Considering that his previous track record was established in Holland where everyone seems to score a ton of goals it is probably a pretty reasonable assumption that he won't transform into a goal-scorer anytime soon. It is also worth mentioning that in the Yahoo scoring system that a yellow card and a few fouls committed dropped his fantasy total under 10 despite a goal counting for 10 by itself (when the SOT is taken into account).

The good news is the Phil Jones returned to the starting line-up, the bad news is that the results weren't great.

The first goal that Manchester United allowed appeared to be more of a breakdown of the left side of the defense with Angel Di Maria and Luke Shaw both caught out of position. The second goal was mostly a result of Rafael not being on the same page with his central defenders and allowing Saido Berahino to run behind the center backs and still be onside for a breakaway. Neither would indicate that Jones was at fault for either goal per se but Louis Van Gaal will have hoped for a better overall showing from Jones and the defense in general as they come back to health.

Ander Herrera overcame worries associated with his rib issues and started the match against West Brom and played 45 minutes.

The fact that Herrera started and played 45 minutes means that he should at least be considered a potential starter against Chelsea next weekend. The fact that he came off at halftime may mean that the rib injury is such that taking the inevitable clattering that goes with being a Premier League midfielder is too much. Given the task at hand on Sunday it will be interesting to see how LVG chooses to go with his choice in central midfield.

Arsenal have been dealt yet another injury blow as coach Arsene Wenger confirmed Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina will be ruled out until the New Year after suffering a recurrence of his thigh injury.

Ospina is yet to appear for Arsenal domestically since his move from Nice - a thigh injury suffered during the World Cup ensured he spent most of his time on the treatment table with a grade three tear and it now looks like he could be out for a further three months after suffering a recurrence. The injury leaves Arsenal short with Damian Martinez expected to provide the back-up to first choice Wojciech Szczesny but should anything happen to either then Wenger would have to choose between teenage keepers Ryan Huddart or Josh Vickers.

Chelsea are expected to be without Loic Remy for this weekends’ trip to Old Trafford as the striker hobbled to the sidelines moments after he opened the scoring in Tuesday nights’ UEFA Champions League victory over Maribor.

The summer signing from QPR was starting his second consecutive game in the absence of Diego Costa [hamstring] while Didier Drogba is still regaining match-fitness following his recovery from an ankle injury. Prior to the game Mourinho had envisaged his Ivorian striker would complete around 30 minutes, however with the potential loss of Remy and Costa for game week nine tonights’ extended run out [75 minutes] could stand Drogba in good stead for his first league start since returning to the Bridge from Galatasaray. If a post-match assessment confirms Loic Remy has indeed suffered a muscle tear then the French international can expect at least two weeks out meaning he would miss the upcoming games against Manchester United and Liverpool.
