Sunderland have released Carlos Cuellar, Oscar Ustari and Keiren Westwood at the end of their contracts, while it has also been agreed that defender Andrea Dossena will leave before the final year of his deal.

There is little surprise that Gus Poyet has allowed these four players to leave, as none of them were involved in the remarkable turnaround that saved Sunderland from relegation last season. The departures free up some space to allow the Black Cats' manager to reshape the squad.

Crystal Palace's turbulent start to the new season continued as they were beaten 3-1 by West Ham United at Selhurst Park.

Things go from bad to worse for Crystal Palace, but this was an important result for West Ham. Summer signing Mauro Zarate scored a spectacular debut strike on the volley from 20 yards, and Stewart Downing added a rare goal to make it 2-0 before half-time. Marouane Chamakh offered some hope for Palace when he pulled a goal back after the restart but Carlton Cole quickly made it 3-1, and the Hammers closed out the match for a fully deserved three points.

Everton were in complete control, going up 2-0 by halftime and controlling play for the majority of the second half, but Arsenal struck for two goals in the final 8 minutes to steal a point in the 2-2 final.

Amazing how a few minutes can completely change the script of a Premier League game. Reporters were probably already well into writing their copy that no doubt would have included phrases like "The Gunners put on a horrific display" or "What was Wenger thinking with that XI?". Questions still remain but they pulled two nifty goals out of their hat, the first came when Santi Cazorla sent a low cross to a charging Ramsey in the box, and Rambo delivered again. Then, in the final moments of normal time, Nacho Monreal recovered a loose ball in the corner, then sent a cross into the box that Olivier Giroud connected on and leveled the score. The Gunners have a history of poor showings from time to time, but this game was like a microcosm of how badly and how deadly they can be. Not to be forgotten, the defense was extremely poor, and that would have to be attributed to the absence of Laurent Koscielny.

Marouane Chamakh scored a good goal, but Crystal Palace were well beaten by West Ham at Selhurst Park.

One thing Palace were renowned for last season was their defensively solidity, but that was nowhere to be seen against the Hammers. They were completely outplayed in the first half, and were eventually beaten 3-1 despite a good strike by Chamakh. The Eagles have lost their first two games and desperately need a new manager before a poor start to the season becomes a crisis.

For the second consecutive match to open their season, Everton let a lead slip away and had to settle for a draw, the one today with Arsenal being particularly heartbreaking as the two sides finish 2-2.

For about the first 75-80 minutes of this one, everything was going swimmingly for the Toffees. Seamus Coleman picked up where he left off last season, opening his account for Everton's first goal when he collected a lovely lob pass into the area from Gareth Barry and finished easily. Then, just before halftime, the Toffees were on the break with loads of space. It was Steven Naismith, the beneficiary of a blown offsides call, who split the defense and scored his second goal in as many games. With Ross Barkley reportedly at least a month away from returning, Naismith appears to have secured himself a spot in the XI and is beginning to raise a few eyebrows in the fantasy community. His classification as a forward makes it hard to prefer him to others at his position, but with a current (and I mean current as of this very second) price of 7.59m, he at least needs to enter one's thinking in plus matchups.

Burnley go goalless on their trip to Swansea city and find themselves at the bottom of the table in the early going having yet to earn a point.

Crystal Palace are level at the bottom with Burnley as both have played twice, lost both and are matched with a -3 goal difference. At least Burnley can take solace in that at leas they are not having a crisis in management like Place are. Regardless, Burnley are looking the weakest of the promoted sides and they should be battling relegation all season. Players like Lucas Jutkiewicz, who tore it up in preseason, simply cannot produce when it matters.

Louis van Gaal confirmed during yesterday’s press conference that new signing Ander Herrera will be absent from Sundays team sheet after the player suffered an injury in training.

Herrera joins an ever growing list of players currently sidelined after the midfielder was reported to have injured his ankle during a training session on Thursday becoming the third Manchester United casualty within the last seven days. Jesse Lingard hobbled out of the opener against Swansea City with suspected knee ligament damage while teammate Marouane Fellaini was spotted at hospital on Tuesday with his ankle in a protective cast. Herrera will undergo further tests next week once the swelling subsides allowing for a more accurate assessment and diagnosis.

Mike Williamson earned a second yellow card late on for Newcastle United but it did not help Aston Villa find a goal in a sloppy 0-0 draw.

It was a tough break for Williamson, as his first yellow in the 86th minute was very soft and seemingly given to "even out" things as the Magpies had not received a single yellow up to that point while Villa already had four. It made no difference, as Villa were positively inept in the final third. Newcastle were equally poor in their attacking, but they did come close as Siem De Jong, making his debut as a substitute, had a terrific chance but was denied by Brad Guzan. Newcastle have a nice run of fixtures on tap, however their attacking players have done little to give fantasy managers confidence and the success of their defense today had more to do with Villa's poor display.

Aston Villa escaped their home opener with a point thanks to another clean sheet by Ron Vlaar and company as they finished 0-0 with Newcastle United.

Amazingly, Villa sit on four points after two games having registered a total of ONE shot on target. Today, obviously, they had none. Possession and midfield work was fair, but every time they reached the final third, it was an inaccurate pass here, a shot sailing well into the crowd there...it is clear they are in serious trouble this season in terms of staying in the top flight unless they can find another dynamic player or two to strengthen the attack. Otherwise, they will have to rely heavily on their defense to keep up their end of the bargain.

Leicester City were game opponents but Diego Costa and Eden Hazard scored as Chelsea cruised to victory at Stamford Bridge in Week 2.

Kasper Schmeichel did his best to keep his team in it but his opposite number, Thibault Courtois, was just as impressive and eventually Chelsea's talent was just too much for Son-of-Peter. Diego Costa (sort of) controlled a centered Branislav Ivanovic pass with his chest and had enough time to power it past Schmeichel for the opener. Eden Hazard scored on a brilliant piece of individual effort to seal the win for Chelsea. Ivanovic was impressive going forward all day and unlucky not to get more tangible statistics for his efforts.

Kasper Schmeichel made a few excellent saves and Leicester stuck with Chelsea for 62 minutes but couldn't hold back the tide of Chelsea's attack.

Schmeichel looked every bit his father's son saving eight shots against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately, David Nugent wasn't up to the task of beating Thibault Courtois when he was in alone on the Belgian keeper and Chelsea's attack just kept coming. Diego Costa scored in the 63rd minute and Eden Hazard scored in the 77th to close out a Blues win. Make no mistake though, Leicester City will not be a pushover this season.

A first half goal from Nathan Dyer was all that was needed to give Swansea City their second consecutive win to start the season, as they hold off several late flurries by Burnley to win 1-0.

Things are looking up at the Liberty Stadium in the early going. Sure, it was Burnley, but there have been plenty of underdogs giving their favored opponents fits already this season. It was a sweet through ball from Gylfi Sigurdsson that found Dyer using his pace to streak down the right and fire the ball in. Wilfried Bony didn't make the score sheet, but had his share of chances. The defense had little to do through the first hour as Swansea dominated possession, but as they game wound down, Burnley gave them a proper test and the Swans passed it.
