Speaking at his first press conference as Manchester United manager, Louis Van Gaal deflated transfer gossip pages everywhere by saying that he would sensibly be giving current players 3 to 4 weeks before deciding what to do with them.

The papers have been assuming that Louis Van Gaal has already created a "staying"/"going" list covering the current squad and were hoping that today's press conference would start the tidal wave of high profile names leaving the club (because those would all be good stories). LVG poured cold water on a month's worth of transfer stories by indicating that he is going to give players like Ashley Young, Nani, Chris Smalling, Rafael, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, and Marouane Fellaini some time to show what they have before selling them and buying replacements. All very sensible, what place does that have in the summer silly season?

Arsenal's aggressive summer of recruiting may be set to continue with reliable sources indicating that Porto attacking midfielder Juan Fernando Quintero may well be moving to the Emirates next week.

With holding midfielder still a glaring need, Arsenal supporters may be wondering why Arsene Wenger is focusing his attention on the very well stocked attacking midfielder spot. At 21 years old, the recruitment of Quintero, if it comes to fruition, may signal the departure of Lukas Podolski and/or Santi Cazorla. Recognizing that both veteran attackers are unlikely to be satisfied with marginal roles now that Alexis Sanchez is in town, Wenger may be taking the opportunity to bring in an even younger reserve and off-load the large salaries being taken home by Cazorla and Podolski.

Reports in multiple places indicate that Marouane Fellaini is likely to be playing for Napoli this coming season with the details of the transaction still to be resolved.

The trend in Italy is for clubs to acquire a new player on a year long loan with the purchase coming in a year's time. While there is a "house of cards" feel to that sort of arrangement from a financial health point of view the trend appears to have been growing among Serie A clubs. Whether Manchester United is willing to not only take a big hit on the price paid for Fellaini just last summer but also wait a year to receive the cash associated with that loss remains to be seen. Assuming that the clubs can agree, it appears that Fellaini is interested in making the switch. Not the proudest chapter in Manchester United's storied history.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed Norwich midfielder Leroy Fer is one of a number of players he is hoping to add to his squad before the start of the Premier League season.

Despite Norwich's relegation, Fer had a very decent debut season in the Premier League and he would be a good signing for any of the promoted clubs. QPR seem to be heading the list of suitors, with Redknapp desperate to add to his central midfield options ahead of the new season. A striker is also a top priority, with only Charlie Austin, Bobby Zamora and Loic Remy on the books at this point in time.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has indicated that a move for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini could still be on after confirming talks between the two clubs.

Sunderland agreed a fee with Liverpool two weeks ago and the club were keen to sell, but Borini himself decided he wanted to stay at Anfield, much to Poyet's frustration. It now appears negotiations are back on, and if Brendan Rodgers were to make it clear to Borini that he doesn't feature in his plans for the season ahead, then the 23-year-old striker may feel he has no option but to take the deal on offer at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester City new boy Willy Caballero has warned Joe Hart that he has no intention of settling for a place on the bench at the Etihad Stadium.

Caballero played under Manuel Pellegrini when at Malaga between 2010-2013 and was regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga, so there is certainly potential that he could displace Joe Hart. Hart had a rocky first season under Pellegrini and lost his place to Costel Pantilimon for a month before winning it back, and the England keeper will need to be at his best again to keep the number one jersey.

Everton have signed Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku for a club record £28m.

This is a massive deal for Everton, who smash their transfer record while securing one of the most sought after forwards in European football. The 21-year-old Belgian, who scored 16 goals on loan for the club last season, has signed a five-year contract at Goodison Park.

Stevan Jovetic bagged a brace but Liverpool beat Manchester City in a pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium.

Liverpool came from behind twice to draw 2-2 in normal time before winning a penalty shoot-out 3-1. However, the biggest news is the superb pre-season form of Jovetic. The striker picked up the man of the match award against AC Milan last week after scoring twice and grabbed two more goals against Liverpool, suggesting he's ready to have a more fluent season for Manchester City. With Alvaro Negredo out injured for the next few months and Sergio Aguero still nursing recurring hamstring and groin problems, he'll be needed. Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson grabbed Liverpool's goals.

Southampton have found an immediate replacement for Luke Shaw in the form of a one year loan for Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand for the upcoming season.

In the wake of the mass exodus at Southampton, the Saints are slowly starting to rebuild. They made earlier moves for Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle for the attacking end but with Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovern gone there is an urgent need to address the defense as well. Southampton made their first move in that direction with the loan signing of Ryan Bertrand from Chelsea. On loan at Aston Villa for the second half of last season, the left back wasn't exceptional by any stretch of the imagination but it would have been hard to be exceptional at Villa last season no matter how good you were as a player. Bertrand will likely get first crack at the starting role and be a solid fantasy option when the Saints have favorable match-ups.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has said he wants to stay at the club for "as long as possible".

After numerous summer rumours suggested Yaya Toure was unhappy at City - with his agent Dimitry Seluk suggesting the club had ignored the midfielder's birthday - it appears the nonsense has come to an end. In his latest interview, Toure is quoted as saying "For me I was always quiet and my decision is that I will stay at Manchester City for as long as possible."

Harry Redknapp has urged Adel Taarabt to 'get himself in shape', if the playmaker wants to have a future at Queens Park Rangers.

Taarabt continues to live up to his reputation. While blessed with huge amount of talent, the midfielder has never been able to settle at a club, often falling foul of management, team-mates and fans. Taarabt spent the first half of last season on loan at Fulham before taking in the second half of the campaign with AC Milan, but he reported to QPR for pre-season in bad shape. Redknapp revealed the midfielder was unfit and has yet to train with his London club, so it will be some time before he sees Premier League action this season. Don't rule out a move away before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.

Hull City announced the dual signings of young defenders Harry Maguire and Andrew Robertson from Sheffield United and Dundee United respectively.

In his first year back in the big time, Steve Bruce's transfer approach was all about buying known Premier League quantities who could improve Hull City's chances of staying up. With today's dual-signing of Maguire and Robertson and the earlier signing of Tom Ince, Steve Bruce has departed from that approach and started to stock the shelves with younger players with talent. Maguire has been scouted by Manchester United and Chelsea at times and has been compared favorably to John Terry as a young player. Robertson, named Scotland Young Player of the Year this past season, is a left back who plays solid defense and has scored some spectacular goals on his rapid rise from amateur football to the Scotish national team and now the Premier League. Both will likely be eased in behind veterans but there is some excitement about Hull's after this summer.
