Sunderland produced an impressive performance to seal an emphatic 5-1 win over Darlington in a pre-season friendly.

Fletcher, who was making his first appearance since March, marked his return from injury with two goals before being taken off at half-time. The striker was badly missed last season and his return will be like a new signing for the Black Cats as they look to avoid another relegation battle. Emanuele Giaccherini, Connor Wickham and new signing Jordi Gomez scored the other goals.

Sunderland had their hearts broken and their fate sealed when a late goal from AFC Bournemouth sent the Black Cats to a 0-1 loss and to the Championship next season.

Sunderland had made late-season surges to avoid relegation a trademark in recent seasons, but the squad simply lacked in too many areas to stave off a drop this time around, with another negative chapter of David Moyes' managerial career in the books. Both sides had several chances to find an opener in this one, but both keepers did well as the last line of defense. Jordan Pickford also managed to help the attack, delivering a couple of deep kicks that almost led to big chances. Pickford looks to have a bright career ahead of him but, like so many others on Wearside, one wonders if that career continues with the Black Cats beyond this season.

Hull City won a point in dramatic circumstances at Saint Mary's in a 0-0 draw with Southampton.

It was a borefest in the first half, with little attacking of note. The home side received a few boos as they walked in for the interval, but in truth they failed to spur them into action. Manolo Gabbiadini was hauled off just before the hour mark, much to the disdain of fantasy managers across the globe. Southampton were wasteful from set-pieces throughout the encounter, lacking Ward-Prowse's speciality as he sat on the bench. The had forced Jakupovic into just one save before the earned a penalty in added time after N'Diaye knocked down Yoshida illegally. However, Hull's 'keeper got low to the left to save Tadic's penalty. The result meant that relegation rivals Sunderland have had their gloomy fate confirmed, while Marco Silva's men have edged closer to unexpected safety.

Josh King's 2017 just keeps getting better, adding his 15th goal of the season in dramatic fashion, giving AFC Bournemouth a late winner in a 0-1 win over Sunderland.

King becomes the second Norwegian player to hit the 15 goal plateau in PL history, but more on that in a moment. King was at the center of several chances over the course of the match, notably in the 20th minute, when he sent a clever chip over the keeper before hitting the bar and then off the post. There was also a couple of penalty shouts that he was at the center of, but the referee was not having it. The breakthrough finally came in the 88th minute, when the Cherries were on the break. Ryan Fraser sent a pass low across the box and found King who tapped it in with the same confidence that has led to a dozen league goals in the calendar year. The three points lifts Eddie Howe's side into the top half of the table but there was one sour note, as Benik Afobe appeared to pick up a hamstring injury shortly before the hour mark.

Stoke City failed to score for the fourth time in seven PL games, drawing 0-0 with West Ham at the Bet365 stadium.

There were a number of chances in the first half which were negated by opposition defences. Early on, Berahino threatened to end his 24 game barren run in the league but Winston Reid put in a great block to stop the striker. Later in the half, Jack Butland performed a spectacular save to keep out Andre Ayew's equally spectacular bicycle kick. Butland was again called to action in the second half, making a double save from Ayew and Lanzini. In spite of a combined 30 shots, both teams only mustered up four shots on target in all. The share of the spoils edges both sides closer to securing their Premier League status for next season.

Liverpool announced the club has tied down defender Dejan Lovren to a new long-term contract after an impressive season.

The Croatian international bounced back from a down year by making 25 appearances in the Premier League, starting every match despite missing a month with injury. Lovren has been the club's bona fide leader along the back-line, forming a fluid partnership with summer signing Joel Matip. Now, it looks like the pair will be together for years to come following the 27-year-old Lovren's new deal. Said manager Jurgen Klopp: "In a situation like this, you really have to look from the outside. If Dejan played for another club, you would think about signing him. Then you would have to think about what would you have to pay for him and it would be a lot - a big sum of money. Having him around and giving him a new contract and working with him together… he is 27 years old and his best time for a centre-half is still to come."

Slaven Bilic named an unchanged starting XI at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday after several first-team players passed late fitness tests.

The West Ham manager revealed on Thursday that Arthur Masuaku, Winston Reid and Cheick Kouyate were all struggling to make the trip to Stoke while Diafra Sakho was rated as "very doubtful" after sustaining a back injury. But, despite the early concern, last weekend’s starters were given the all-clear, although Sakho failed to make the Hammers bench leaving Andre Ayew to partner Jonathan Calleri in attack. The full extent of the injury is not yet known, but Andy Carroll [groin] is expected to recover, after missing the last two, in time to face Tottenham in GW36. Robert Snodgrass and Sofiane Feghouli returned to the match-day squad while Bilic also included Sam Byram and Mark Noble following their respective domestic bans.

Crystal Palace (and Liverpool) dodged a bullet with defender Mamadou Sakho set to miss weeks rather than months.

The on-loan defender appeared to sustain a gruesome injury for Crystal Palace against Spurs last week after leaving on a stretcher with a knee injury. But Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that scans showed there isn't any ligament damage as Sakho could return before the end of the season. "Since we got the images from Crystal Palace, we know there are no ligaments involved, so in a situation like this - and maybe not for Crystal Palace - but for the player it’s the best thing he could get. I think he is out for a few weeks, but that is something that will be good at the end, but at the end of the season each injury is a big blow because there is not a lot of time to recover."

David Moyes was forced into four changes, from the side which narrowly lost out at the Riverside Stadium, for the visit of Bournemouth on Saturday.

Moyes revealed on Friday afternoon that several key first-team players were struggling to recover in time for their must win game against the Cherries. Darron Gibson and Jack Rodwell [both groin], Lee Cattermole [Achilles], Jason Denayer [dead leg] and Billy Jones were all unavailable for the Black Cats boss after picking up knocks in the Tees/Wear derby. "We played Wednesday night and it’s quite a quick turnaround. We’ve not had loads of them this season so we can’t complain about that but we’ve got four injuries," he said. In their absence, Moyes turned to Steven Pienaar, who makes his first Premier League of 2017, with out-of-favour centre-back Lamine Kone and full-back Donald Love returning to the side. Fabio Borini was also back to add some attacking threat - Sunderland have scored just twice in the last eight Premier League games.

Manchester United centre-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah is expected to miss the rest of the season after picking up an injury in Thursday's Manchester derby.

Fosu-Mensah, 19, is thought to have suffered a dislocated shoulder after coming on as a substitute when Marouane Fellaini was sent off in the dying minutes of the scoreless tie. The teenager landed awkwardly on his right shoulder after a challenge, with Mourinho describing the setback as "important". The manager explained: "He’s really injured in the last action of the game, in the last tackle he was on the floor, and it's also an important injury."

Bournemouth will have to do without Dan Gosling and Andrew Surman for Saturday's visit to the Stadium of Light.

Gosling hobbled off in the Cherries' demolition of 'Boro in GW34 and has not recovered in time for the trip north. Surman was injured in a collision with Fraser Forster earlier in the month in the 0-0 draw with Southampton. He damaged the medial ligaments in his knee but there's hope he'll return before the PL season draws to a close. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Eddie Howe said: "We’re still without Andrew Surman and Dan Gosling doesn’t look like he’s going to make it. Dan was struggling with his calf and was forced off against Middlesbrough. With Andrew, he’s not at the stage where he’s ready to train." Lewis Cook is likely to make his second start of the season in place of Gosling.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney may return to his side's starting XI to face Swansea on Sunday.

Rooney, 31, has not played in midfield in his short spells on the pitch during José Mourinho's tenure as manager, but played there regularly under Van Gaal. Mourinho made a brash statement about this when he took the United post, claiming that ""ith me he will never be a No. 6, not even a No. 8" however it appears that injuries and suspensions will force the Portuguese to U-turn on his statement. When quizzed in his pre-match press conference on whether Rooney was be viewed as a midfield option for the weekend, Mourinho explained: "Yes, he’s an option... We don’t have [any other players there]. We have Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick and nothing else. And Tim Fosu-Mensah, like [against City], an emergency to help the team, he’ s another who we will miss, so we are in trouble but we will fight, that’s for sure."
