Manchester United have reportedly signed German defender Mats Hummels for a fee of $28 million.

$28 million is a fair price for a defender of his caliber, as Hummels showed in the World Cup that he is a World Class defender. He fills an immediate need for Manchester United's new manager Louis van Gaal and should be a starter on day one. van Gaal is an attacking minded coach but Manchester's defensive line is looking better and better and Hummels should be a great fantasy option if he does indeed join the Premier League.

Sergio Aguero is expected to miss Argentina’s final Group D game against Nigeria as manager Jorge Sampaoli rings the changes.

La Albiceleste are on the brink of a World Cup exit following their embarrassing 3-0 defeat by Croatia and the Manchester City star could be one of several high-profile names omitted from the starting XI on Tuesday. "Kun Aguero WON'T play in the decisive match against Nigeria," respected journalist Jose Alvarez Haya posted on his Twitter timeline. "Sampaoli will punish him for everything that happened the other day but publicly will justify it by sport reasons. Then will be out Argentina's only goal scorer in the World Cup that has played two very good games." His absence is likely to see a change of system with Gonzalo Higuaín starting his first game of the finals alongside Paulo Dybala while Angel di Maria could be handed a recall.

Stephan Lichtsteiner has become the latest Switzerland player to be investigated by FIFA following his country’s win over Serbia on Saturday.

Arsenal midfielder Xhaka Granit and Stoke winger Xherdan Shaqiri are already facing the prospect of a two-match ban following their goal celebrations in the 2-1 win. FIFA are analysing footage to determine whether both players are guilty of ‘Provoking the Public’ after they made a 'double eagle’ gesture symbolising the Albanian flag. Article 54 of the disciplinary code states: "Anyone who provokes the general public during a match will be suspended for two matches and sanctioned with a minimum fine of €5000." On Sunday, FIFA confirmed that they had opened disciplinary procedures on a third player, new Arsenal signing Stephan Lichtsteiner, who was also seen celebrating with his compatriots: "We had a lot of pressure, it was not an easy game for us," he said. "We have a lot of Albanians, so there is a lot of history between Serbia and Albania. It was a very tough game for them mentally."

Manchester City defender Danilo Luiz da Silva is facing a race against time to play in Brazil’s final game of Group E after picking up an injury in training.

The 26-year-old was missing from the match-day squad on Friday after team doctor - Rodrigo Lasmar – confirmed Danilo had tweaked his right thigh during the team’s final session. He was replaced by Corinthians right-back Fagner, in the only change from the 1-1 draw with Switzerland, as Brazil secured a late win over Costa Rica to all but guarantee their progression to the knockout phase of the tournament. A return will to play depend on how Danilo responds to treatment over the coming days, but there is no suggestion at this stage that the injury could end his World Cup.

Ahmed Musa became the first Leicester City player to score at a World Cup by scoring both goals as Nigeria overcame Iceland 2-0 on Friday.

The City attacker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at CSKA Moscow, was the hero of Nigeria's victory over World Cup debutants Iceland. Musa broke the deadlock in the 49th minute with one of the goals of the tournament when he latched onto a Victor Moses cross before performing a skilled flick and volleying it home from 10-yards. The 25-year-old then put the match to bed with his second in the 75th minute, making him Nigeria's top scorer in the World Cup with four. The result means the Super Eagles would qualify for the knockout stage with a victory over Argentina in their final match.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson is at risk of missing the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a "torn muscle" during Iceland’s historic 1-1 draw with Argentina on Saturday.

Assistant coach Helgi Koldvidsson told a news conference on Wednesday that the Burnley winger is rated as a major doubt for the upcoming Group D clash with Nigeria, although a final decision on his availability would not be made until Friday: "It remains a question whether he will be fit but we’ll see on match-day." The update suggests the problem is not too serious and offers some hope that Gudmundsson can still play a part in Russia, however, Iceland may need to reach the last-16 for him to do so. The 27-year-old suffered a similar injury back in April which resulted in him spending a fortnight on the sidelines.

Nordin Amrabat was a surprise starter on Wednesday as Morocco went in search of their first Group B win against European champions Portugal.

The Watford winger fell heavily to the ground [versus Iran] banging his head which appeared to render him unconscious. The incident attracted the attention of the worlds media following the odd-method of treatment administered by the Moroccan medical team which involved spraying water in the face of Amrabat and slapping him around the cheeks. He later spent a night in hospital after team doctor - Abderrazak Hifti – revealed: "I asked him five questions and he could only answer one, I saw clear symptoms of cerebral concussion." Their actions prompted FIFA to write a strong letter to the football federation expressing their ‘shock’ at the handling of the situation but they deny any wrongdoing: "We never make a decision that would put a player’s health at risk." FIFA concussion protocol clearly states that players must wait a minimum of six days before a return to competitive play, so just how Amrabat was declared fit is cause for concern.

West Ham officially announced the signing of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski from Swansea City in a £7 million move.

The goalkeeper arrives in East London on a three-year contract and looks to be the bona fide No. 1 with Joe Hart set to return to Manchester City from his loan and amid Adrian's struggles for the side in recent years. Over the past four seasons, Fabianski has only missed three Premier League matches for recently relegated Swansea City, where he established himself into one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the league. Said the Polish international: "West Ham is a massive club so I’m really happy to be joining at such an exciting time here. I will do my best on and off the pitch to help the team to achieve the best results possible and can’t wait to start this new chapter of my career."

Dele Alli is rated as a major doubt for England’s second Group G game against Panama on Sunday.

The Tottenham midfielder suffered a thigh injury during the first half of the win over Tunisia, and even though Fabian Delph was readied as his replacement, Alli managed to see out 80 minutes. "Hopefully I am okay," he said post-match. "It's my quad." Meanwhile, the Football Association confirmed that the 22-year-old was sent for a precautionary scan which revealed a "slight thigh strain," and with such a short turnaround between games, Gareth Southgate is not prepared to take any unnecessary risks. That could open the door for Ruben Loftus-Cheek who impressed during his 10-minute cameo. Elsewhere, Marcus Rashford will also come into the manager’s thinking having helped change the course of Monday’s game. The Manchester United attacker replaced a disappointing Raheem Sterling, who faded badly in the second half, and he looks poised for a starting berthing against the team ranked at 55 in the world by FIFA.
