"With the imminent departure of Paulinho", said Corinthians president Mario Gobbi Filho.

Paulinho, who scored Brazil's match-winner today against Uruguay, has been linked to Spurs (and would likely make Tom Huddlestone and/or Scott Parker surplus to requirements). But Real Madrid could swoop in a scuttle the deal. Evidently, we'll know soon enough. After the weekend's Confederations' Cup final most likely.

Liverpool prepare to take their spending past £80 million for the summer, which is good news for Man City as they launch a third bid to secure Raheem Sterling…

The Daily Express report that Liverpool are ready to meet Aston Villa’s £32.5 million release clause in Christian Benteke’s contract. The Belgian striker would be their sixth signing of the summer, taking their spending past £80 million. All of which is music to Manuel Pellegrini’s ears. City have already had offers of £25m and £40m for Raheem Sterling knocked back, but with an £80m hole in Liverpool’s budget it is widely thought that a third bid closer to £50m will finally land their man. Sterling reported back to pre-season training this morning and will no doubt want the matter dealt with quickly. Not least because he stands to pocket a £4m slice of his agents’ fee if a £50m deal is done, thanks to an unique contract arrangement.

Roberto Martinez is on pole position to sign Juventus center-back Angelo Ogbonna in a £7 million deal…

According to reports in Italy, Juventus are ready to listen to offers for center-back Angelo Ogbonna and Everton are ready to pounce. The 27-year-old made 25 appearances in Juve’s double-winning season and was on the bench for the Champions League final. But has struggled to nail down a regular first team spot. His availability has alerted West Ham and Southampton, but Roberto Martinez has been tracking the player all summer and thought to be favorite to land him for a fee in the region of £7m. Italian international Ogbonna will relish the chance to revive his career in the PL with the Euros coming at the end of the season and provide Everton with a quality alternative to John Stones and Phil Jagielka.

Norwich have been put off a move for Robbie Brady by Hull’s £7 million asking price…

The proposed transfer of Robbie Brady to Norwich has hit the buffers because Hull are demanding too much money for the winger. Norwich boss Alex Neil has identified the Republic of Ireland international as key to his plans on their return to the PL, but value Brady at £4.5 million. Hull want £7 million for the former Manchester United man who spent two years on loan at the club before making the move permanent in January 2013. He was a regular last season, playing 34 times and will add PL experience but if a compromise cannot be made Norwich will turn their attention elsewhere. QPR winger Matt Phillips was a player of interest, but he looks on the verge of a move to West Brom so Norwich could be left frustrated.

Tottenham have formally announced that Etienne Capoue has joined Watford on what is believed to be a £5million transfer.

Capoue, believed to be part of a package deal between Spurs and Watford that could also include Benjamin Stambouli, should see the field much more at Watford than he did at Spurs. After a high profile move to the North London club as part of the class of summer signings that came in to replace Gareth Bale, playing time failed to materialize. With Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb ascendant in holding midfield roles, Capoue's move was inevitable. As Watford's new record signing, he should be a guaranteed starter.

The arms race in Turkey is heating up as Fenerbahce match Galatasaray's signing of Lukas Podolski by signing Nani from Manchester United.

Former stars from top European leagues have dotted the Turkish first division in recent seasons from Didier Drogba to Wesley Sneijder to Filipe Melo to Demba Ba. Many have moved on over the past two summers and a new wave appears to be arriving to take their places. Nani wasn't going to regain his place at Old Trafford after a season out on loan and a move to Turkey as he, at 28-years-old, starts toward the downside of his career probably makes sense. The deal is not 100% official yet but it should be shortly as the Turkish club have posted a photo of the player arriving for his medical on their official Instagram account.

Rumors in England and Turkey have Robin van Persie creating an Old Trafford reunion tour at Fenerbahce next season.

Things were supposed to go differently for Robin van Persie at Manchester United after Louis Van Gaal took over. He was coming off a strong World Cup performance for the same manager and everything looked primed for him to put his lost season under David Moyes behind him. It was not to be as his first season under Van Gaal went just as poorly as his season under Moyes. With a first team place unlikely, van Persie is apparently looking to Turkey as a way to get things going again. Should van Persie leave, the list of needed acquisitions in the next month is going to be steep at United with a David De Gea replacement likely needed along with a right back, center back, and at least one, if not two, forwards to replace Falcao and van Persie. The Guardian have gone as far as to say that terms have been agreed on this deal.

Manchester United will be sweating on an update from the Argentine FA after Angel di Maria limped out of Saturdays’ Copa America final against hosts Chile with an apparent hamstring injury.

Di Maria was making a lung bursting run from deep only to pull up sharply clutching the back of his thigh although the club remain hopeful that the injury will not impact too much on the wingers pre-season. The player will need a scan to confirm the extent of the problem but with minor fibre damage Di Maria could return as expected following his break post tournament. AdM joins Javier Hernandez in the treatment room - the striker is recovering from surgery after fracturing his collarbone while representing Mexico last week. United begin pre-season training on Monday.

The Sunday Express reveal that Liverpool are expected to meet the buy-out clause for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The big Belgium would cost near $50 million and represent Brendan Rodgers’ seventh major purchase of the summer. The arrival of Benteke is likely to see fringe players Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini move on while Mario Balotelli has reportedly been linked with a move to Tyneside although new manager Steve McClaren is not keen. Raheem Sterling will report to pre-season training on Monday but the England winger could complete a move to the Etihad within the next 7-days and former full-back Glen Johnson [released] is believed to be on the verge of a move to West Ham.

Sunderland turn their attentions to Everton’s Aiden McGeady whose days look numbered at Goodison Park…

Having apparently missed out on PSV Eindhoven wide-man Georginio Wijnaldum to local rivals Newcastle, Sunderland have turned their attentions to Everton’s Republic of Ireland international McGeady. The 29-year-old has had an indifferent time at Goodison since joining from Spartak Moscow, starting just 14 matches since January 2014. The arrival of Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu suggests that he is no longer in Roberto Martinez’s plans. Rumours surfaced last week that he had handed in a formal transfer request, with former club Celtic ready to offer him a return to the SPL. Sunderland are in the market for a specialist wide player with Adam Johnson’s future uncertain and Jermain Defoe and Conor Wickham unconvincing in the role last season.

Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish has confirmed a bid for PSG midfielder Johan Cabaye…

It is a deal that has been mooted for some time, with manager Alan Pardew knowing Cabaye well from their days at Newcastle. Several big names have been talked of as potential Palace targets, Chelsea’s Loic Remy and QPR’s Charlie Austin among them. But when money-man Steve Parish goes public we can re-categorize the story from ‘rumor’ to ‘speculation’. Parish told talkSPORT that the move signaled the club’s ambition to become a Top 10 PL club. ‘For us to get in the top 10 in the PL, we have got to make sure we are bringing in top 10 players.’ Parish describes the deal as ‘challenging’ – for which we can probably read ‘expensive’ – but it is a real demonstration of intent. And if they pull it off don’t be surprised if more ‘top 10’ players such as Remy, Austin et al follow suit.

Argentina dropped it's second straight major tournament after advancing to the final match as the went down to Chile on penalties.

Argentina has a line-up filled with world superstars but for the second straight final they looked like less than the sum of their parts. Chile played well and took their penalties well with Arsenal talisman Sanchez getting the winner to send the host nation into delerium.
