Manchester United will reportedly lose out to Barcelona in the race to secure Thomas Vermaelen's services.

Reports have indicated that Arsenal were not inclined to sell their captain to Manchester United for the second time in three years, especially with a strong competing bid from Barcelona. Reports further stated that Arsenal could have been swayed by a swap deal for Chris Smalling but that United wasn't interested in those terms. It appears likely that Vermaelen will leave the Emirates in short order leaving Arsene Wenger in need of a fourth center back behind Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, and Calum Chambers.

Francis Coquelin is questionable for Arsenal's trip across London after suffering a head injury in a collision with Olivier Giroud in the 2-0 over Everton on Sunday.

The extent of Francis Coquelin's injury is still being evaluated. He could require surgery that would keep him out for Week 28 and possibly beyond. He could also be ready to go in Week 28 with the assistance of a protective face mask. With Arsenal not playing until Wednesday, only fantasy managers who can make changes right up until that team's matches start should consider Coquelin for their line-up. Even then, they should only do so if they have a credible alternative to substitute in whose match starts at the same time as Arsenal's on Wednesday.

After being rested for Week 27 against Everton, Per Mertesacker may be rested again for Week 28 in order to give him an extended rest.

Per Mertesacker looked rotten against Monaco last mid-week in Champions League action and overuse has been called out as the biggest reason given how frequently the German started for Arsenal after playing for the entire World Cup. To make the rest a meaningful one, it seems likely that Gabriel will start a second consecutive match as Arsenal travel to Loftus Road on Wednesday. The rotation has not been made official anywhere but it makes sense given what we saw from Mertesacker.

Dame N'Doye was rested due to fatigue after having to travel back and forth to Senegal last week. He is questionable for Week 28 but seems likely to play having had two more days to recover.

Both Jelavic and Dame N'Doye were absent over the weekend and Steve Bruce will hope that he has at least one of the duo back. Sunderland's trip to the KC Stadium offers a good chance for three points but that chance will be diminished with no recognized forwards available along with the absence of Robbie Brady. If you have the option to wait until line-ups are released then one or both Hull City forwards could be options but if you don't then it's probably best to avoid both Jelavic and N'Doye

Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak has accepted a Football Association charge of violent conduct after elbowing West Ham's Diafra Sakho.

Jedinak caught Hammers striker Sakho with an elbow near the end of Palace's 3-1 victory on Saturday but the incident was missed by the referee. The FA charged the midfielder retrospectively and he has accepted the charge. The Eagles say they are awaiting details of Jedinak's punishment, but it is widely expected that he will face a four games ban as this is his second red card offence of the season.

Massadio Haidara suffered a setback in training and is highly unlikely to feature for Newcastle United tomorrow evening when they host Manchester United.

Davide Santon would certainly come in handy right about now. The last thing the Magpies could afford was another casualty in defense but it is looking gloomy in that respect. This would almost have to give Ryan Taylor an opportunity to start unless they call up a youth player. Taylor played the final half hour over the weekend and grabbed double digit fantasy points in the process, with no goals or assists in that total - he is a fantasy darling in any fixture. He makes for a great differential in your XI this week.

Saido Berahino played and scored over the weekend after being questionable but is listed as questionable again for Albion's mid-week at rivals Aston Villa.

The Baggies have struggled for goals all season and the possible absence of Berahino will compound that should he, indeed, miss the match. It compounds what is a trouble spot for West Brom against Villa since Victor Anichebe is definitely out and Brown Ideye also faces a fitness test on his knee. Expect one, if not both, of Ideye or Berahino to stage a miraculous recovery but betting on one of them will probably be more than most fantasy managers want to bit off.

Nikica Jelavic who missed Hull City's Week 27 loss has a chance to feature in Week 28 with his manager saying that he's "hopeful".

If you have the option to wait until line-ups are released then one or both Hull City forwards could be options but if you don't then it's probably best to avoid both Jelavic and N'Doye.

Toby Alderweireld should be available for Southampton in week 28.

Alderweireld was out for seven weeks with a hamstring issue but is finally deemed fit and should be available for selection against Crystal Palace in midweek. It's a bit risky to use Alderweireld in fantasy due to the fact he might come off the bench since he hasn't played in such a long time, but he'll be a great choice starting next week.

Graziano Pelle could lose his starting job after a series of horrible performances.

Pelle has been absolutely horrific in recent weeks and just can't finish regardless of how good his chances have been. Ronald Koeman might choose to bench him in favor of Shane Long or another one of his winger/forward options. Regardless of whether he plays, we recommend not using Pelle in fantasy during this rough stretch.

Sunderland have both Wes Brown and John O'Shea available for the vital Week 28 clash at Hull, but are struggling with other absences.

Sunderland quite rightly won their appeal against the sending-off of Brown although his availability won’t guarantee any game time – the defender struggles to play consecutive games in quick succession. O’Shea will not face any retrospective action and he could partner Santiago Vergini or Seb Coates in the heart of defence if Gus Poyet decides the risk with Brown is too great. Will Buckley [knee] and Emanuele Giaccherini [ankle] are the only injury absentees but Adam Johnson has been suspended pending a further enquiry into his alleged relations with an underage girl. Billy Jones, Jack Rodwell and Ricky Alvarez are back in contention.

Crystal Palace are facing a striker shortage for Week 28 as they look to keep up their fine form at Southampton.

Palace will be full of confidence having comfortably brushed West Ham aside but the Eagles are suffering from a striker shortage as Glenn Murray serves a one game ban joining injured trio Marouane Chamakh, Yaya Sanogo and Fraizer Campbell [all hamstring] on the sidelines. Dwight Gayle is likely to be the lone frontman in a 4-5-1 with Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie supporting but Shola Ameobi is available should Pardew prefer a 4-4-2 formation. Jordan Mutch [thigh] will miss out after limping off at the Boleyn Ground while his replacement James McArthur should retain his place. Mile Jedinak has until 6pm [GMT] on Tuesday to respond to an FA charge of violent conduct following his alleged elbow on Diafra Sakho.
