Calum Chambers looked very much the part deputizing for Per Mertesacker in Arsenal's 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City.

The Southampton product was solid partnering Laurent Koscielny and then Nacho Monreal in the center of defense as Arsenal cruised to victory over last season's champions. Chambers' strong performance against solid competition is important after Arsenal's two main deputy center backs from last season - Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna - both left the club over the summer. With Per Mertesacker still recovering from his World Cup exploits there is a solid chance Chambers starts at CB in Week 1 for the Gunners.

Wes Hoolahan is on a collision course with Norwich as the City midfielder looks to go against the wishes of his club and play in the upcoming internationals despite injury.

The newly promoted Canaries were hoping Hoolahan would rest during the close season to help aid his recovery from a niggling knee problem – believed to be a tendon at the back – ready for the BPL opener in August. However the midfielder has made himself available for the friendly against England and more importantly for Martin O'Neill, the Euro qualifier with Scotland in a refreshing twist on the club versus country row. Marc Wilson, Shane Long, Stephen Ward, Aiden McGeady, Jon Walters and Paul McShane all sat out of the first training session but none are thought to be carrying serious injuries.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Chelsea will begin their BPL title defence with at least three players missing as Juan Cuadrado, Felipe Luis and Willian are given additional time to recover due to their impending participation in this summer’s Copa America.

Representing Colombia and Brazil respectively the trio will be afforded extra time away rather than being rushed back into pre-season training to help minimise fatigue related injury and burn-out. With the tournament running until July a return in early September is realistic although Chelsea do have options. Only Willian has featured regularly and, if fit, Oscar could come into the side as his replacement. Azpilicueta is the preferred choice at full-back while Cuadrado has failed to live up-to his expensive price tag since moving from Fiorentina in January.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that Tom Cleverley is in talks with Everton over a move to the Goodison Park club amidst interest from Aston Villa, Arsenal and Southampton.

That Aston Villa, where Cleverley enjoyed a productive loan spell, and Everton, the home of loan boss Roberto Martinez from Cleverley's time with Wigan, comes as little surprise. What does come as something of a surprise are the links to Arsenal, who are stocked with central midfielders, and Southampton who may not be quite as stocked but are, none-the-less, not exactly struggling for central midfielders. If the rumors are true then Tim Sherwood and Villa are going to have a hard time getting their man. Cleverley's contract with Manchester United is up and he will be able to move to a new club on a free transfer this summer.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly going to exercise their right to cancel the Southampton's agreed fee to purchase Alderweireld permanently.

Apparently there is a clause in the contract of Toby Alderweireld that sent him on loan to Southampton to prevent a permanent move and Atletico sound like they will exercise it. The defender had an excellent season with the Saints and Atletico must believe they can sell him for a higher fee. With Chelsea reportedly interested, the bidding war should increase his price significantly. Alderweireld would be a great fit at Chelsea as he can solve their depth issue at both center back and left-back if Felipe Luis leaves this summer. His fantasy value at Chelsea would be lower at the beginning of the season due to unknown playing time.

Manchester City do love former Arsenal players and Alex Song could be next in a long line of former Gunners to feature for City.

Alex Song's season-long loan at West Ham started very well but faded along with the Hammers' overall form as the season progressed. With the loan spell concluded and the Hammers seemingly uninterested in pursuing a permanent deal, Song's future is up in the air. Manchester City have been mentioned as having interest in bringing the player to the Etihad. If the deal happens, Song would join former Arsenal teammates Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, and Bacary Sagna on the blue side of Manchester. City are likely looking for players to replace Frank Lampard who is definitely leaving and James Milner who is out of contract and has indicated that he'd like to start regularly. Song counts as a home-grown player after coming to Arsenal at the age of 17.

Yaya Toure and his agent have both backtracked on comments indicating that the player would be leaving the Etihad this summer.

With two seasons still to run on his contract and an owner who has indicated in the press that he is not interested in selling such a vital part of his team, Yaya Toure looks set to stay at Manchester City. After a mediocre season by his standards, the Ivorian will apparently look to rebound in the Premier League rather than try his luck in Serie A with Inter or one of the other rumored suitors. City, the oldest team in the Premier League last season, will still need to get younger but they won't have to do so while also replacing one of their best players.

Mauricio Pochettino has come out with statements indicating that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is happy at Spurs and wants to remain at the club despite rumors linking him to Manchester United.

Should David De Gea choose Real Madrid over staying at Manchester United, Hugo Lloris is rumored to be high on United's list of replacement candidates. It would be hard to blame the France international for wanting Champions League football and the chance at a Premier League title after his time at Spurs has been lacking in either. Pochettino sounds confident that his goalkeeper wants to stay but he may be forced to backtrack later in the summer should a massive offer come Spurs' way from United. Lloris is signed through 2019 so Spurs have some leverage and United are unlikely to pay over the odds for Lloris as he is generally deemed to be in the second tier of goalkeepers behind players like Neuer, Courtois, and De Gea.

Jose Mourinho eased concerns regarding Diego Costa by admitting the Spanish striker was replaced against Thailand All-Stars due to fatigue and not because of injury.

Only 24 hours before Chelsea’s post-season opener Costa was on on the receiving end of an overly enthusiastic John Obi Mikel challenge which caught the Spanish international on the ankle and he was helped from the training pitch. However it was only a minor knock and Costa was introduced for a 25 minute second half cameo replacing team mate Loic Remy against the All-Stars. Post-match Mourinho revealed Costa was suffering from "fatigue" and he was withdrawn as a "precaution" given his ongoing hamstring problems. Dominic Solanke grabbed the only goal of the match on 13 minutes in a game Chelsea dominated in terms of possession although the Blues did struggle to breakdown their hard working opponents.

Jack Wilshere has again shown immaturity as he led the crowd out to celebrate Arsenal's FA Cup victory in a series of profane anti-Spurs chants and songs.

Wilshere has been with the club since the age of nine and, as such, is probably as rooted in the rivalry with Tottenham as any of the supporters. That said, for the second straight season he has embarrassed the club with his antics at the FA Cup celebration. His contributions have been occasionally spectacular but inconsistency and injury issues have kept him from being a first team regular. At some point, Arsenal may look at the wealth of options in their midfield - Coquelin, Ramsey, Cazorla, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Walcott - and decide it is time to cash in on a young English player who is still viewed as having potential. It won't be too much longer until Wilshere goes from "having potential" to "having had potential" and losing his value. Manchester City would likely be interested in (over)paying for Wilshire if he were available.

Morgan Schneiderlin would only leave Southampton for a team that plays in the Champions League.

This basically narrows down his suitors to Arsenal at the moment, as they are the only team rumored to be going after him that are in the Premier League and are playing Champions League football next season. Schneiderlin said he is happy in England and would like to remain there, and also mentioned he is happy to stay at Southampton if there isn't an acceptable offer for him from a big club. It sounds like Schneiderlin's future is undecided so keep an eye out for rumors this summer.

Three Leicester City players have been sent home after an embarrassing video was leaked.

The three players - Tom Hopper, Adam Smith, and Adam Pearson, were recorded as being involved in sex acts with a number of Thai women during their team trip to Thailand. The players are quoted in the video for using racist terms against the women on top of verbal abuse. There will likely be harsh consequences for the three players based on how serious the evidence is and we don't expect to see them to feature early in the season.
